Purpose and scope:

This Policy governs the use of Biblica, Inc.’s (“Biblica”) intellectual property (including but not limited to Bible translations, Bible audio recordings, ministry resources, films, and related media, hereafter referred to collectively as the “Materials”) by all licensees (hereafter collectively referred to as the “Publishers”) in non-print licensed works such as mobile software applications, software programs, digital platforms, and websites that generate or present personalized content for end users, including artificial intelligence or machine-learning (“AI/ML”) applications (collectively, the “Work”).

This Policy is hereby incorporated by reference into, and forms an integral part of, the applicable license agreement between Biblica and the Publisher (the “License Agreement”), as if fully set forth therein. Compliance with this Policy is a material condition of the License Agreement with respect to any digital or AI/ML use of the Materials. In the event of any conflict between this Policy and the License Agreement, the terms of the License Agreement shall govern unless expressly stated otherwise in writing by Biblica.

Principles and objectives:

This Policy seeks to ensure that:

  • The Materials are used faithfully and responsibly in a manner consistent with Biblica’s theological and ethical commitments.
  • Digital applications utilizing the Materials respect intellectual property rights and prevent unauthorized reproduction or distribution.
  • Users’ interactions with Scripture and related resources promote thoughtful, Christ-centered engagement rather than commercial or sensational use.
  • Biblica’s reputation and mission are protected from association with inappropriate, misleading, or unauthorized content.

Hosting and access controls:

The Materials licensed to Publishers shall be stored and hosted on the Publishers’ own secure servers, using industry-standard encryption and access controls. The Materials may not be posted in any public repository, open database, or other environment where third parties could access, extract, or download the content, in part or in whole, without authorization. Publishers shall implement continuous monitoring and periodic security audits to ensure compliance with this requirement.

Functionality, user interaction, and testing:

  • Publishers shall design and maintain the Work so that user interactions with the Materials are limited to biblically responsible, non-speculative, and non-sensational forms of engagement. Permitted interactions may include, by way of example and not limitation:
    • Explanation or summary of the biblical text;
    • Historical or literary context;
    • Identification of related or cross-referenced passages; and
    • Overview of interpretive perspectives that are commonly held within orthodox Christian theology,

provided that such outputs do not enable reconstruction of the underlying Bible text.

  • The Work must not enable or encourage outputs that are speculative, doctrinally innovative, prophetic, personalized in a pastoral or authoritative manner, or otherwise presented as definitive theological instruction.
  • Publishers shall implement ongoing testing and validation to ensure the accuracy, fidelity, and theological soundness of all AI-generated outputs or personalized content derived from the Materials (“Results”).
  • Publishers shall ensure that AI-generated theological content, commentary, interpretations, and responses remain consistent with historic orthodox Christian doctrine as reflected in the Nicene Creed.
  • Publishers shall ensure that any AI-enabled functionality clearly and continuously discloses to users that they are interacting with an artificial intelligence system and not a human being. AI systems utilizing the Materials may not impersonate, emulate, or otherwise create the impression that users are communicating with God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, a pastor, counselor, spiritual advisor, or any other real person. Publishers shall not market or present AI interactions as a substitute for human relationships, pastoral care, discipleship, counseling, or spiritual direction.
  • Biblica reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to require modification, limitation, or removal of any user interaction or functionality that it determines poses theological, reputational, or legal risk.

Representation and endorsement

  • Publishers shall not represent or imply any endorsement, approval, or theological validation by Biblica or its representatives regarding:
    • The Publisher’s product,
    • The personalized results generated by the product, or
    • Any associated commentary, analysis, or interpretation.
  • Any mention of Biblica within the Work must be strictly factual (e.g., attribution to the Materials used) and may not include branding elements that suggest partnership or sponsorship, except as explicitly approved in writing.

AI and Machine-Learning use of Materials:

  • Permitted Use:
    • Subject to this Policy, Publishers may use the Materials for AI/ML purposes, including training, fine-tuning, evaluation, or inference, provided the use aligns with Biblica’s mission, values, and doctrinal positions. For avoidance of doubt, permitted training or fine-tuning must be conducted in a manner that does not result in the model being able to reproduce the Materials verbatim or substantially similar passages outside the licensed Work.
    • Subject to Biblica’s General Use Guidelines and attribution requirements, AI-assisted tools (including chat-based AI systems) may quote limited portions of the Materials in generated outputs for purposes of study, reference, comparison, or commentary, provided that such quotation (i) is produced verbatim, (ii) complies with all applicable quotation limits, and (iii) does not constitute reproduction of a substantial portion of the Materials.
  • Theological and doctrinal integrity:
    • AI/ML outputs / Results must not materially alter or contradict the theological positions, statements of faith, or scriptural interpretations expressed by Biblica.
    • Publishers must ensure outputs do not imply endorsement or authorship by Biblica.
  • Data security and confidentiality:
    • Publishers must implement industry-standard technical and organizational safeguards to prevent unauthorized access, disclosure, or misuse of the Materials.
  • Derivative content and model use:
    • Results derived from the Materials must be clearly labeled as such and may not be represented as Biblica-authored content.
    • For purposes of this Policy, “derivative works” do not include non-extractive summaries, explanations, or contextual analyses that do not substitute for or reconstruct the underlying biblical text.
    • Publishers may not provide the Materials or trained AI models to third parties for purposes of training, fine-tuning, or model development without prior written approval.
    • USE OF THE MATERIALS AS SOURCE TEXTS FOR CREATING NEW BIBLE TRANSLATIONS OR DERIVATIVE WORKS IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED. VIOLATION RESULTS IN IMMEDIATE TERMINATION OF THE LICENSE AGREEMENT WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE. BIBLICA’S RIGHTS REMAIN STRICTLY RESERVED IN THIS REGARD.
  • Review and quality assurance:
    • Publishers must implement review processes to ensure Results maintain doctrinal accuracy, reliability, and alignment with Christian values.
    • Results must not be misleading, defamatory, offensive, or harmful to Biblica’s reputation or that of its intellectual properties.
  • Commercialization restrictions:
    • Commercial use of Results derived from Materials is prohibited unless explicitly authorized by Biblica.
    • Publishers may not sell, sublicense, or transfer AI models trained on Biblica’s Materials without written approval.
    • This restriction applies to the commercialization of AI models or outputs as standalone products, datasets, or services, and does not prohibit ordinary commercial distribution of the licensed Work itself, subject to the applicable License Agreement.
  • Right to Revoke AI/ML Use:
    • Biblica may in its sole discretion suspend or revoke permission for AI/ML Use if it poses theological, reputational, legal, or security risks.

AI Safeguards, Controls, and Oversight:

To mitigate theological, legal, security, and reputational risks associated with artificial intelligence and machine-learning use of the Materials, Publishers shall implement appropriate technical, organizational, and human safeguards, including, at a minimum, the following:

  • Technical controls against prompt injection and output manipulation
    • Publishers shall implement reasonable and appropriate technical measures designed to prevent prompt-injection attacks, instruction override, or other attempts to manipulate AI behavior in a manner inconsistent with this Policy. Such measures may include, without limitation:
      • content-filtering and moderation layers;
      • input sanitization and validation routines; and
      • system-level guardrails that preserve the integrity of system instructions.
    • Where AI systems utilize system prompts or protected instructions, Publishers must ensure such instructions are not user-modifiable and cannot be overridden by end-user inputs.
  • Protection of proprietary content through access controls, isolation, and traceability
    • Publishers shall ensure that all Materials used in AI/ML workflows are stored, processed, and accessed only within secure, access-controlled environments.
  • Unless expressly authorized in writing by Biblica:
    • AI systems shall not be trained, fine-tuned, or architected in a manner that causes the Materials to be retained, memorized, or reproduced beyond the scope of the licensed use; and
    • the Materials, or models trained on the Materials, shall not be exposed, transferred, or made available to third parties.
    • Publishers shall implement reasonable traceability measures, such as watermarking, tagging, logging, or equivalent mechanisms, to enable detection of unauthorized reproduction, extraction, or distribution of the Materials or Results derived therefrom.
  • Human oversight, review, and output validation
    • Publishers shall maintain human oversight over AI-generated outputs or personalized content derived from the Materials.
    • Prior to publication, distribution, or downstream use, Publishers must implement review processes reasonably designed to:
      • verify factual accuracy and textual fidelity;
      • ensure theological soundness and consistency with orthodox Christian doctrine; and
      • confirm compliance with this Policy and applicable license terms.
  • FULLY AUTOMATED PUBLICATION OF AI-GENERATED OUTPUTS DERIVED FROM THE MATERIALS WITHOUT MEANINGFUL HUMAN REVIEW IS PROHIBITED, UNLESS EXPRESSLY APPROVED IN WRITING BY BIBLICA.

Theological and ethical safeguards

  • If, in Biblica’s sole discretion, any results, interpretations, or derivative content developed through the Work are deemed:
    • inconsistent with biblical truth;
    • inappropriate to the nature of the Materials;
    • likely to bring shame, embarrassment, or disrepute to Biblica or the Christian faith; or
    • seriously or demonstrably anti-Christian,

then Biblica may, by written notice, require the Publisher to (i) immediately cease using the Materials for such purposes; and (ii) remove or disable the offending content or Results within forty-eight (48) hours of receiving such notice. Failure to comply within the specified timeframe constitutes a material breach, entitling Biblica to revoke the license and pursue other legal remedies.

Intellectual Property Protection

All rights, title, and interest in the Materials remain exclusively with Biblica. No license granted conveys ownership or the right to create unauthorized derivatives except as expressly permitted herein. Publishers must include a copyright and attribution notice as provided by Biblica with any use of the Materials. Publishers shall promptly notify Biblica of any suspected infringement or misuse of Materials.

Compliance, audit, and termination

  • Publishers acknowledge that Biblica’s ability to audit AI/ML use of the Materials is essential to protecting the integrity of Scripture and Biblica’s intellectual property. Failure to provide requested documentation, demonstrations, or reasonable access necessary to verify compliance shall constitute a material breach of the License Agreement.
  • Non-compliance must be remedied within a timeframe specified by Biblica. Repeated, serious, or willful violations, including AI/ML misuse, may result in immediate license termination and loss of rights to use the Materials. Audits conducted under this Section may include audits related to AI/ML use as described in the section on “AI and Machine-Learning use of Materials” and may rely on documentation, demonstrations, or attestations requested by Biblica.

Amendment and review

Biblica reserves the right to amend this Policy at any time. Amendments shall be effective immediately upon publication or written notice. Biblica will use reasonable efforts to provide notice of material amendments. Publishers bear sole responsibility for reviewing current versions of the Policy and ensuring ongoing compliance.
