Using Biblica Bible Texts

Biblica is dedicated to making the Bible available to people around the world while faithfully stewarding the Scripture texts entrusted to us. This page provides guidance on how Biblica Bible texts and audio Bibles may be used, shared, and licensed. It explains when permission is not required, when permission or licensing is necessary, and how to request permission for your intended use.

We kindly ask that you review the information on this page before submitting a Permission Request Form, as many common usage questions and permission guidelines are addressed.

General Use Guidelines

You may quote Biblica Bible text in any form (written, visual, electronic, or audio) without requiring written permission, provided that all of the following conditions are met:

  • 500 verses or fewer are used in total, and
  • The verses quoted do not constitute a complete book of the Bible, and
  • The verses quoted make up less than 25% of the total text in your product or publication, and
  • Each use includes proper copyright acknowledgment.
    • (If needed, Biblica can provide the correct copyright acknowledgment.)

If your use falls outside any one of these guidelines, written permission is required.

Please submit a Permission Request Form to apply for permission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Biblica text on social media?

Biblica does not allow uncontrolled downloads of our texts or audio from websites or social platforms. As a result, Bible text and audio Bibles may only be licensed for online website display and audio streaming, not for unrestricted download or redistribution through social media.

Can I quote a verse on merchandise (shirts, mugs, etc.)?

Yes. However, this type of use generally falls outside the General Use Guidelines and typically requires written permission.

If the use does fall within the General Use Guidelines, the acronym NIV must appear immediately after the quoted Bible verse or passage.

Can I record and post a Scripture-reading video?

No. Biblica does not permit unlicensed parties to create new audio derivatives or adaptations of our Bible texts, especially where official audio Bibles already exist and are available to the public.

You may request permission to use our existing audio Bible recordings, but please note:

  • They may not be used on YouTube or any platform that allows uncontrolled copying or redistribution.
  • They are not licensed for offline / downloadable use as part of mobile applications.
  • Streaming is permitted only through websites or mobile apps.

What if my project is still in development?

Biblica generally does not issue licenses for products or software that are still in development. Once your product is complete, you are welcome to submit a Permission Request Form with details about your product, including what makes it unique or innovative.

Can I use Biblica text in an app or website?

  • Yes. This use requires written permission, which could be in the form of an Express License if your use qualifies, or under a Standard Publishing License (see above).
  • Licensing the full text of any Bible translation can only be granted to a registered legal entity, not to an individual. Documentation verifying the legal entity will be required.

How long does it take to receive a permissions decision?

After submitting a Permission Request Form, please allow up to 10 business days for an initial review of your request. If the request is approved to proceed, preparation of a permission letter may take up to an additional 10 business days. Requests requiring a full license agreement may take approximately 4–6 weeks to complete, depending on the scope and complexity of the request.

Are royalty payments required?

Any applicable royalty payments are determined based on the specific details of each request and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

What if my project is a fundraiser or donor thank-you gift?

This is considered a “premium” and therefore a form of commercial use and requires written permission if it falls outside the General Use Guidelines. Such use may be subject to a royalty payment.

Other Questions?

We encourage you to review the information and guidelines on this page before submitting a request. If you determine that permission or licensing is needed for your intended use, please continue to the Permission Request Form.
