A Spring Reset: Clearing Space for God’s Word

Spring is a time of fresh starts and new beginnings. As the seasons change, many of us feel the pull to open windows, sort through closets, and clear out what we no longer need. We declutter our homes, make needed repairs, and create space for new rhythms, activities, and growth. Spring cleaning isn’t just about tidying up, it’s about restoring order and making room for what matters most.

This same practice is just as important in our walk with God. Our lives can become cluttered with distractions, worries, and habits that crowd out time with Him. Spring offers a beautiful invitation to pause, reflect, and ask, what needs to be cleared away so God’s Word can dwell in me more fully? Scripture urges us, “Let the word of Christ dwell among you richly” (Colossians 3:16). When God’s Word fills our hearts, it reshapes what we reach for, how we respond, and what flows from our lives.

Here are three simple ways to spiritually reset this spring by clearing space for God’s Word.

  1. Turn Doom Scrolling into Reading God’s Word

It’s easy to fill spare moments by endlessly scrolling on our phones, often without realizing how much time and attention it consumes. While social media and apps promise connection or escape, they often leave us more distracted and restless. Spring is a perfect time to reset our habits and choose something better.

Instead of automatically reaching for our phones, we can reach for Scripture. God’s Word grounds us, renews our minds, and invites us into His presence. “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.” (Psalm 1:1–2). Reading the Bible can become an oasis of worship in a busy day, paired with journaling, prayer, or quiet reflection as we respond to what God is saying.

What we consistently turn to shapes us. Choosing Scripture over scrolling creates space for God to speak and for our hearts to be re-centered on Him.

  1. Turn Worry into Prayer

Worry often reveals what we’re carrying on our own. When uncertainty fills our minds, our thoughts can spiral into fear about the future. Jesus gently reminds us, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself” (Matthew 6:34). Instead of dwelling on anxieties and concerns, Scripture invites us to bring everything to God.

Paul writes, “Pray continually” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Prayer shifts our focus from our limitations to God’s faithfulness. When worry surfaces, it can become an invitation to pray and to ask for God’s perspective, peace, and wisdom. As we invite Him into our concerns, we make room for His peace to guard our hearts and minds.

Letting go of worry is part of spiritual spring cleaning. Prayer clears space for trust to grow.

  1. Turn Complaining into Thanksgiving

Complaining keeps our attention fixed on what’s wrong, what’s missing, or what feels unfair. It turns our focus inward and magnifies our circumstances. Thanksgiving, however, lifts our eyes to God’s goodness and presence, even in difficult seasons.

David declares, “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing” (Psalm 23:1). Gratitude reminds us that God is enough. When we intentionally thank Him for salvation, provision, His mercy, and even simple gifts, our perspective changes. “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise” (Psalm 100:4). Thanksgiving lightens the weight we carry and draws us closer to God’s heart.

This spring, choosing gratitude over complaining helps us become more God-focused and others-focused, reflecting the sacrificial love of Christ.

Letting His Word Dwell in Us Richly

When God’s Word truly dwells in us, it changes what comes out of us. Jesus said, “For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:30). If life feels overwhelmingly heavy, it may be a sign we’re carrying things we were never meant to hold. It also reveals the clutter we have allowed to overwhelm our lives.

Spring is an invitation to release that clutter, to let Scripture shape our responses, guide our habits, and fill our hearts. May this season be a reset where God’s Word becomes what we reach for when we’re bored, worried, or frustrated. As we clear space for Him, His peace, joy, and life will overflow from us, bringing renewal not only to our own hearts, but to those around us as well.
