The people’s confession of sin
1While Ezra was praying and confessing, weeping and throwing himself down before the house of God, a large crowd of Israelites – men, women and children – gathered round him. They too wept bitterly. 2Then Shekaniah son of Jehiel, one of the descendants of Elam, said to Ezra, ‘We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the peoples around us. But in spite of this, there is still hope for Israel. 3Now let us make a covenant before our God to send away all these women and their children, in accordance with the counsel of my lord and of those who fear the commands of our God. Let it be done according to the Law. 4Rise up; this matter is in your hands. We will support you, so take courage and do it.’
5So Ezra rose up and put the leading priests and Levites and all Israel under oath to do what had been suggested. And they took the oath. 6Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God and went to the room of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. While he was there, he ate no food and drank no water, because he continued to mourn over the unfaithfulness of the exiles.
7A proclamation was then issued throughout Judah and Jerusalem for all the exiles to assemble in Jerusalem. 8Anyone who failed to appear within three days would forfeit all his property, in accordance with the decision of the officials and elders, and would himself be expelled from the assembly of the exiles.
9Within the three days, all the men of Judah and Benjamin had gathered in Jerusalem. And on the twentieth day of the ninth month, all the people were sitting in the square before the house of God, greatly distressed by the occasion and because of the rain. 10Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, ‘You have been unfaithful; you have married foreign women, adding to Israel’s guilt. 11Now honour10:11 Or Now make confession to the Lord, the God of your ancestors, and do his will. Separate yourselves from the peoples around you and from your foreign wives.’
12The whole assembly responded with a loud voice: ‘You are right! We must do as you say. 13But there are many people here and it is the rainy season; so we cannot stand outside. Besides, this matter cannot be taken care of in a day or two, because we have sinned greatly in this thing. 14Let our officials act for the whole assembly. Then let everyone in our towns who has married a foreign woman come at a set time, along with the elders and judges of each town, until the fierce anger of our God in this matter is turned away from us.’ 15Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah, supported by Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite, opposed this.
16So the exiles did as was proposed. Ezra the priest selected men who were family heads, one from each family division, and all of them designated by name. On the first day of the tenth month they sat down to investigate the cases, 17and by the first day of the first month they finished dealing with all the men who had married foreign women.
Those guilty of intermarriage
18Among the descendants of the priests, the following had married foreign women:
From the descendants of Joshua son of Jozadak, and his brothers:
Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib and Gedaliah. 19(They all gave their hands in pledge to put away their wives, and for their guilt they each presented a ram from the flock as a guilt offering.)
20From the descendants of Immer:
Hanani and Zebadiah.
21From the descendants of Harim:
Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel and Uzziah.
22From the descendants of Pashhur:
Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad and Elasah.
23Among the Levites:
Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (that is, Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah and Eliezer.
24From the musicians:
Eliashib.
From the gatekeepers:
Shallum, Telem and Uri.
25And among the other Israelites:
From the descendants of Parosh:
Ramiah, Izziah, Malkijah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malkijah and Benaiah.
26From the descendants of Elam:
Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth and Elijah.
27From the descendants of Zattu:
Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad and Aziza.
28From the descendants of Bebai:
Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai and Athlai.
29From the descendants of Bani:

Les chefs israélites s’engagent à obéir à Dieu
1Pendant qu’Esdras, prosterné devant le temple de Dieu, faisait cette prière et cette confession en pleurant, une foule très nombreuse d’hommes, de femmes et d’enfants israélites s’était rassemblée autour de lui, et tous pleuraient abondamment. 2Alors Shekania, fils de Yehiel, un descendant d’Elam, prit la parole et dit à Esdras : Nous avons été infidèles envers notre Dieu en épousant des femmes étrangères prises parmi les peuples du pays. Mais malgré cela, il reste encore une espérance pour Israël dans cette affaire. 3Engageons-nous maintenant par une alliance avec notre Dieu à renvoyer toutes ces femmes avec leurs enfants, conformément au conseil de mon seigneur Esdras et de ceux qui respectent les commandements de notre Dieu. Que la Loi soit observée ! 4Lève-toi, car c’est à toi de régler cette affaire. Mais nous sommes avec toi. Prends courage et agis !
5Alors Esdras se releva et fit prêter serment aux chefs des prêtres, des lévites et de tout Israël d’agir comme il venait d’être dit. Ils en firent tous le serment. 6Puis Esdras quitta la cour du Temple et se rendit dans une salle de Yohanân, fils d’Eliashib, où il passa la nuit10.6 où il passa la nuit: d’après l’ancienne version grecque ; le texte hébreu traditionnel a : et il alla. Il est aisé de confondre les deux termes en hébreu. ; mais il refusa toute nourriture et toute boisson car il menait deuil à cause de la faute grave des anciens exilés.
La réunion des anciens déportés à Jérusalem
7On fit ensuite publier dans Juda et à Jérusalem un ordre enjoignant à tous les anciens déportés de se réunir à Jérusalem. 8Les chefs et les responsables du peuple avaient décidé que ceux qui ne se présenteraient pas dans un délai de trois jours verraient tous leurs biens voués à l’Eternel et seraient eux-mêmes exclus de la communauté des anciens déportés. 9Alors tous les hommes de Juda et de Benjamin se rassemblèrent à Jérusalem dans les trois jours. C’était le vingtième jour du neuvième mois. Tout le peuple se tenait dans la cour du Temple en tremblant, à cause de cette affaire, et aussi parce qu’il pleuvait à verse. 10Esdras le prêtre se leva et leur dit : Vous avez commis une faute grave en épousant des femmes étrangères, et vous avez rendu Israël encore plus coupable. 11Reconnaissez donc maintenant votre péché devant l’Eternel, le Dieu de vos pères, et conformez-vous à sa volonté ! Séparez-vous de la population du pays et de vos femmes d’origine étrangère !
12Toute l’assemblée répondit à haute voix : Tu as raison. Notre devoir est d’agir comme tu l’as dit ! 13Mais nous sommes nombreux et c’est la saison des pluies ; nous ne pouvons pas rester ici en plein air. D’ailleurs, cette affaire ne peut pas se régler en un jour ni même en deux, car il y en a beaucoup parmi nous qui ont commis une faute dans ce domaine. 14Il vaudrait mieux que nos chefs restent ici pour représenter l’assemblée. Tous ceux qui, dans nos villes, ont épousé des femmes étrangères se présenteront à tour de rôle aux dates qu’on leur fixera, avec des responsables et des juges de leurs villes respectives, jusqu’à ce que l’ardente colère de notre Dieu provoquée par cette affaire se soit détournée de nous.
15Seuls Jonathan, fils d’Asaël, et Yahzia, fils de Thiqva, soutenus par Meshoullam et par le lévite Shabthaï, s’opposèrent à cette mesure. 16Mais la majorité des anciens déportés s’y conformèrent. Esdras, le prêtre, choisit, en les désignant nommément, des chefs des groupes familiaux. Ceux-ci commencèrent à siéger le premier jour du dixième mois pour examiner les cas. 17Ils achevèrent de régler la situation de tous les hommes qui avaient épousé des femmes étrangères le premier jour du premier mois10.17 Trois mois plus tard (voir v. 9)..

Parmi les descendants de Josué, fils de Yotsadaq, et ceux des hommes de sa parenté : Maaséya, Eliézer, Yarib et Guedalia. 19Ils s’engagèrent par une poignée de main à renvoyer leurs femmes et à offrir un bélier en sacrifice pour expier leur faute.
