Asa’s Last Years
1In the thirty-sixth year of Asa’s reign Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and fortified Ramah to prevent anyone from leaving or entering the territory of Asa king of Judah.
2Asa then took the silver and gold out of the treasuries of the Lord’s temple and of his own palace and sent it to Ben-Hadad king of Aram, who was ruling in Damascus. 3“Let there be a treaty between me and you,” he said, “as there was between my father and your father. See, I am sending you silver and gold. Now break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so he will withdraw from me.”
4Ben-Hadad agreed with King Asa and sent the commanders of his forces against the towns of Israel. They conquered Ijon, Dan, Abel Maim16:4 Also known as Abel Beth Maakah and all the store cities of Naphtali. 5When Baasha heard this, he stopped building Ramah and abandoned his work. 6Then King Asa brought all the men of Judah, and they carried away from Ramah the stones and timber Baasha had been using. With them he built up Geba and Mizpah.
7At that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him: “Because you relied on the king of Aram and not on the Lord your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped from your hand. 8Were not the Cushites16:8 That is, people from the upper Nile region and Libyans a mighty army with great numbers of chariots and horsemen16:8 Or charioteers? Yet when you relied on the Lord, he delivered them into your hand. 9For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You have done a foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war.”
10Asa was angry with the seer because of this; he was so enraged that he put him in prison. At the same time Asa brutally oppressed some of the people.
11The events of Asa’s reign, from beginning to end, are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 12In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa was afflicted with a disease in his feet. Though his disease was severe, even in his illness he did not seek help from the Lord, but only from the physicians. 13Then in the forty-first year of his reign Asa died and rested with his ancestors. 14They buried him in the tomb that he had cut out for himself in the City of David. They laid him on a bier covered with spices and various blended perfumes, and they made a huge fire in his honor.

2Ndipo Asa akachukua fedha na dhahabu kutoka hazina ya Hekalu la Bwana na kutoka jumba lake mwenyewe la kifalme na kumpelekea Ben-Hadadi mfalme wa Aramu, ambaye alikuwa anatawala huko Dameski. 316:3 2Nya 20:35; 25:7Akasema, “Pawepo na mkataba kati yangu na wewe, kama ulivyokuwepo kati ya baba yangu na baba yako. Tazama, nimekuletea fedha na dhahabu. Sasa vunja mkataba wako na Baasha mfalme wa Israeli ili aniondokee mimi.”
4Ben-Hadadi akakubaliana na Mfalme Asa na kutuma majemadari wa majeshi yake dhidi ya miji ya Israeli. Wakashinda Iyoni, Dani, Abel-Maimu na miji yote ya hazina ya Naftali. 5Baasha aliposikia jambo hili, akasimamisha kujenga Rama na kuacha kazi yake. 6Ndipo Mfalme Asa akawaleta watu wote wa Yuda, nao wakachukua mawe na miti ambayo Baasha alikuwa anavitumia huko Rama. Kwa vitu hivyo akajenga Geba na Mispa.

Umefanya jambo la upumbavu na kuanzia sasa na kuendelea utakuwa na vita.”
1016:10 2Nya 18:26; Yer 20:2; Mt 14:3Asa akamkasirikia mwonaji kwa sababu ya jambo hili. Alikuwa ameghadhibika sana hata akamweka gerezani. Wakati huo huo Asa akaanza kuwatesa na kuwaonea baadhi ya watu kwa ukatili.
11Matukio ya utawala wa Asa, kuanzia mwanzo mpaka mwisho, yameandikwa katika kitabu cha wafalme wa Yuda na Israeli. 1216:12 Yer 17:5-6; Kum 28:22Katika mwaka wa thelathini na tisa wa utawala wake, Asa alipatwa na ugonjwa kwenye miguu yake. Ingawa ugonjwa wake ulimzidia sana, hata katika kuugua kwake hakutafuta msaada kutoka kwa Bwana bali kwa matabibu tu. 13Katika mwaka wa arobaini na moja wa utawala wa Asa, alikufa na kulala na baba zake. 1416:14 Mwa 50:2; Yn 19:39-40; Mk 16:1; 2Nya 21:19; Yer 34:5Nao wakamzika katika kaburi lile alilokuwa amejichongea mwenyewe katika Mji wa Daudi. Wakamzika kwa jeneza lililowekwa vikolezi na mchanganyiko wa manukato ya aina mbalimbali yaliyotengenezwa kwa utaalamu wa mtengeneza marashi, nao wakawasha moto mkubwa kwa heshima yake.
