1And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword. 2Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time. 3And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.
4¶ But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.19.4 for himself: Heb. for his life 5And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. 6And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. 9¶ And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah? 10And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. 11And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: 12And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. 13And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah? 14And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. 15And the LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria: 16And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.19.16 Elisha: Gr. 19¶ So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him. 20And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee?19.20 Go…: Heb. Profetul Ilie este îmbărbătat să‑și continue lucrarea
1Ahab i‑a istorisit Izabelei tot ceea ce făcuse Ilie și cum îi omorâse pe toți profeții cu sabia. 2Izabela a trimis un mesager la Ilie ca să‑i spună: „Dumnezeii să se poarte cu mine cu toată asprimea2 Formulă tipică de jurământ (lit.: Așa să‑mi facă dumnezeii și chiar mai mult). dacă mâine la această oră nu voi face cu viața ta ce ai făcut tu cu viața fiecăruia dintre ei!“
3Când a auzit acest lucru, Ilie s‑a ridicat și a fugit ca să‑și scape viața. A ajuns la Beer-Șeba, care aparține de Iuda și și‑a lăsat slujitorul acolo, 4iar el s‑a dus cale de o zi în pustie. A ajuns la un verigel, s‑a așezat sub el și s‑a rugat să moară, zicând: „Destul, Doamne! Ia‑mi viața acum, căci nu sunt mai bun decât părinții mei.“ 5Apoi, s‑a întins sub verigel și a adormit.
Dar iată că un înger l‑a trezit și i‑a zis: „Ridică‑te și mănâncă!“ 6Uitându‑se, a văzut la capul său o turtă coaptă pe niște pietre încălzite și un urcior cu apă. După ce a mâncat și a băut, s‑a culcat din nou.
7Îngerul Domnului a venit a doua oară, l‑a trezit și i‑a zis: „Ridică‑te și mănâncă, întrucât călătoria pe care o ai de făcut este prea lungă pentru tine!“ 8El s‑a ridicat, a mâncat și a băut. Apoi, cu puterea pe care i‑a dat‑o această mâncare, a mers timp de patruzeci de zile și patruzeci de nopți până la Horeb, muntele lui Dumnezeu. 9Acolo, a intrat într‑o peșteră și a înnoptat în ea.
Domnul i Se arată lui Ilie
Și iată că Cuvântul Domnului a venit la el și i‑a zis:
– Ce faci tu aici, Ilie?
10El a răspuns:
– Am fost plin de râvnă pentru Domnul, Dumnezeul Oștirilor, fiindcă fiii lui Israel au încălcat legământul Tău, Ți‑au dărâmat altarele și Ți‑au omorât profeții cu sabia. Numai eu singur am mai rămas, iar ei încearcă să‑mi ia viața.
11El i‑a spus:
– Ieși și stai pe munte înaintea Domnului! Iată că Domnul va trece pe acolo.
Înaintea Domnului a venit un vânt mare și puternic, care despica munții și sfărâma stâncile, dar Domnul nu era în acest vânt. După acest vânt, a fost un cutremur de pământ, dar Domnul nu era în acest cutremur. 12După acest cutremur, a venit un foc, dar Domnul nu era în acest foc. Dar după acest foc, s‑a auzit o voce blândă, suavă. 13Când a auzit‑o, Ilie și‑a acoperit fața cu mantaua, a ieșit și a stat la intrarea peșterii.
Și iată că o voce i‑a vorbit și a zis:
– Ce faci tu aici, Ilie?
14El a răspuns:

15Domnul i‑a zis:
– Întoarce‑te pe drumul pe care ai venit și du‑te până la pustia Damascului. Când vei ajunge acolo, să‑l ungi pe Hazael ca rege peste Aram. 16Să‑l ungi și pe Iehu, fiul lui Nimși, ca rege peste Israel, iar pe Elisei16 Elisei (ebr.: Elișa’) înseamnă Dumnezeu mântuie [peste tot în capitol]., fiul lui Șafat din Abel-Mehola, să‑l ungi ca profet în locul tău. 17Și se va întâmpla că cel care va scăpa de sabia lui Hazael va fi omorât de Iehu, iar cel care va scăpa de sabia lui Iehu va fi omorât de Elisei. 18Dar Mi‑am păstrat în Israel șapte mii – toți genunchii care nu s‑au plecat înaintea lui Baal18 Vezi nota de la 16:31. și orice gură care nu i‑a dat sărutare.
Chemarea lui Elisei
19Ilie a plecat de acolo și l‑a găsit pe Elisei, fiul lui Șafat, arând cu douăsprezece perechi de boi. El însuși o mâna pe cea de‑a douăsprezecea. Ilie a trecut pe lângă el și și‑a aruncat mantaua peste acesta.
20Elisei a lăsat boii, a alergat după Ilie și i‑a zis:
– Dă‑mi voie să‑mi iau rămas bun de la tatăl meu și de la mama mea, apoi te voi urma!
Ilie i‑a zis:
– Du‑te și întoarce‑te, dar gândește‑te la ce ți‑am făcut!
21Elisei a plecat de lângă el, a luat o pereche de boi și i‑a înjunghiat. Dând foc uneltelor de arat, a fiert carnea boilor și le‑a dat‑o oamenilor s‑o mănânce. După aceea s‑a ridicat, l‑a urmat pe Ilie și i‑a slujit.
