1Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag; 2It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance. 3And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped. 4And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.1.4 How…: Heb. And I answered him, I am an Amalekite. 9He said unto me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me: for anguish is come upon me, because my life is yet whole in me.1.9 anguish…: or, my coat of mail (or, my embroidered coat) hindereth me, that my, etc 10So I stood upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.
11Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him: 12And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.
13¶ And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite. 14And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy the LORD’s anointed? 15And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died. 16And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD’s anointed.
17¶ And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son: 18(Also he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.)1.18 of Jasher: or, of the upright 19The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen! 20Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph. 21Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil. 22From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty. 23Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.1.23 pleasant: or, sweet 24Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with other delights, who put on ornaments of gold upon your apparel. 25How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places. 26I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women. 27How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!
Vestea morții lui Saul și a lui Ionatan
1După moartea lui Saul, David se întorsese de la înfrângerea amalekiților și se afla în Țiklag de două zile. 2A treia zi a venit un bărbat din tabăra lui Saul, cu hainele sfâșiate și cu țărână pe cap. Când a ajuns la David, s‑a aruncat la pământ și s‑a închinat.

4David i‑a zis:

El a răspuns:
– Oamenii au fugit de pe câmpul de luptă și mulți dintre ei au murit. Saul și fiul său Ionatan au murit și ei.
5David l‑a întrebat pe tânărul care l‑a înștiințat:
– De unde știi că Saul și fiul său Ionatan au murit?
6Tânărul care l‑a înștiințat a răspuns:
– S‑a întâmplat să mă aflu pe muntele Ghilboa, unde l‑am văzut pe Saul, sprijinit pe sulița sa, în timp ce carele și călăreții îl ajungeau din urmă.
7Când Saul s‑a uitat în urmă și m‑a văzut, m‑a chemat, iar eu i‑am răspuns:
– Iată‑mă!
8El m‑a întrebat:
– Cine ești?
Eu i‑am răspuns:
– Sunt amalekit.
9Atunci el mi‑a zis:
– Stai în dreptul meu și omoară‑mă, căci, deși mai este viață în mine, m‑a apucat amețeala.
10Așadar, am stat în dreptul lui și l‑am omorât, deoarece știam că nu va mai trăi în urma căderii sale. I‑am luat apoi coroana de pe cap și brățara de la braț și le‑am adus aici stăpânului meu.
11Atunci David și‑a apucat hainele și le‑a sfâșiat, iar toți bărbații care erau cu el au făcut același lucru. 12Au jelit, au plâns și au postit până seara pentru Saul, pentru fiul său Ionatan, pentru poporul Domnului și pentru Casa lui Israel, căci au căzut loviți de sabie.
13Apoi David l‑a întrebat pe tânărul care i‑a adus veștile:
– De unde ești?
El i‑a răspuns:
– Sunt fiul unui străin, un amalekit.
14Atunci David i‑a zis:
– Cum de nu te‑ai temut să‑ți ridici mâna ca să‑l dobori pe unsul Domnului?
15Apoi David l‑a chemat pe unul dintre tinerii lui și i‑a zis:
– Apropie‑te și doboară‑l!
El l‑a lovit și acesta a murit.
16David i‑a zis:
– Sângele tău să cadă asupra capului tău, căci gura ta a mărturisit împotriva ta când ai zis: „L‑am omorât pe unsul Domnului.“
Cântarea de jale a lui David
17David a cântat această cântare de jale despre Saul și despre Ionatan, fiul acestuia, 18și le‑a spus fiilor lui Iuda să învețe această Cântare a Arcului (iată că ea se află scrisă în „Cartea lui Iașar“18 Sau: Cartea celui drept, o veche culegere de texte epice, astăzi pierdută.):
19„Gloria ta, Israel, zace ucisă pe înălțimile tale.
O, cum au căzut vitejii!
20Nu spuneți în Gat
și nu‑l vestiți pe străzile Așchelonului,
ca nu cumva să se bucure fiicele filistenilor,
ca nu cumva să tresalte de bucurie fiicele celor necircumciși.
21O, munți ai Ghilboei!
Să nu mai fie nici rouă și nici ploaie peste voi,
și nici câmpii pentru darurile de mâncare!21 Sensul versului este nesigur. Sau pe voi / și pe dealurile voastre înalte!
Căci acolo a fost detestat21 Sau: a fost azvârlit cu scârbă. scutul vitejilor,
scutul lui Saul, care nu va mai fi uns cu untdelemn.
22De la sângele celor uciși,
de la grăsimea vitejilor,
arcul lui Ionatan nu dădea înapoi,
iar sabia lui Saul nu se învârtea în gol.
23Saul și Ionatan,
care, în viață, s‑au iubit și s‑au plăcut,
nici măcar în moarte n‑au fost despărțiți.
Erau mai iuți decât vulturii
și mai puternici decât leii.
24Voi, fiice ale lui Israel, plângeți‑l pe Saul!
Pe cel care vă îmbrăca în stacojiu și cu mult fast,
pe cel care vă împodobea veșmintele cu ornamente de aur.
25O, cum au căzut vitejii în mijlocul luptei!
Ionatan zace ucis pe înălțimile tale.
26Sunt mâhnit din cauza ta, frate Ionatan!
Mi‑ai fost atât de drag!
Dragostea ta pentru mine a fost minunată,
mai minunată chiar decât dragostea femeilor.
27O, cum au căzut vitejii
și cum au fost distruse armele!“
