سقوط انسان
1مار از همهٔ حيواناتی كه خداوند به وجود آورد، زيركتر بود. روزی مار نزد زن آمده، به او گفت: «آيا حقيقت دارد كه خدا شما را از خوردن ميوهٔ تمام درختان باغ منع كرده است؟»
2-3زن در جواب گفت: «ما اجازه داريم از ميوهٔ همهٔ درختان بخوريم، به‌جز ميوهٔ درختی كه در وسط باغ است. خدا امر فرموده است كه از ميوهٔ آن درخت نخوريم و حتی آن را لمس نكنيم و گرنه می‌ميريم.»
4مار گفت: «مطمئن باش نخواهيد مُرد! 5بلكه خدا خوب می‌داند زمانی كه از ميوهٔ آن درخت بخوريد، چشمان شما باز می‌شود و مانند خدا می‌شويد و می‌توانيد خوب را از بد تشخيص دهيد.»
6آن درخت در نظر زن، زيبا آمد و با خود انديشيد: «ميوهٔ اين درختِ دلپذير، می‌تواند، خوش طعم باشد و به من دانايی ببخشد.» پس از ميوهٔ درخت چيد و خورد و به شوهرش هم داد و او نيز خورد. 7آنگاه چشمانِ هر دو باز شد و از برهنگی خود آگاه شدند؛ پس با برگهای درختِ انجير پوششی برای خود درست كردند.
8عصر همان روز، آدم و زنش، صدای خداوند را كه در باغ راه می‌رفت شنيدند و خود را لابلای درختان پنهان كردند. 9خداوند آدم را ندا داد: «ای آدم، چرا خود را پنهان می‌كنی؟»3:9 يا «ای آدم، کجا هستی؟».
10آدم جواب داد: «صدای تو را در باغ شنيدم و ترسيدم، زيرا برهنه بودم؛ پس خود را پنهان كردم.»
11خداوند فرمود: «چه كسی به تو گفت كه برهنه‌ای؟ آيا از ميوهٔ آن درختی خوردی كه به تو گفته بودم از آن نخوری؟»
12آدم جواب داد: «اين زن كه يار من ساختی، از آن ميوه به من داد و من هم خوردم.»
13آنگاه خداوند از زن پرسيد: «اين چه كاری بود كه كردی؟»
زن گفت: «مار مرا فريب داد.»
14پس خداوند به مار فرمود: «به سبب انجام اين كار، از تمام حيوانات وحشی و اهلی زمين ملعونتر خواهی بود. تا زنده‌ای روی شكمت خواهی خزيد و خاک خواهی خورد. 15بين تو و زن، و نيز بين نسل تو و نسل زن، خصومت می‌گذارم. نسلِ زنْ سر تو را خواهد كوبيد و تو پاشنهٔ وی را خواهی زد.»
16آنگاه خداوند به زن فرمود: «درد زايمان تو را زياد می‌كنم و تو با درد فرزندان خواهی زاييد. مشتاق شوهرت خواهی بود و او بر تو تسلط خواهد داشت.»
17سپس خداوند به آدم فرمود: «چون گفتهٔ زنت را پذيرفتی و از ميوهٔ آن درختی خوردی كه به تو گفته بودم از آن نخوری، زمين زير لعنت قرار خواهد گرفت و تو تمام ايام عمرت با رنج و زحمت از آن كسب معاش خواهی كرد. 18از زمين خار و خاشاک برايت خواهد روييد و گياهان صحرا را خواهی خورد. 19تا آخر عمر به عرق پيشانی‌ات نان خواهی خورد و سرانجام به همان خاكی باز خواهی گشت كه از آن گرفته شدی؛ زيرا تو از خاک سرشته شدی و به خاک هم برخواهی گشت.»
20آدم، زن خود را حَوّا (يعنی «زندگی») ناميد، چون او می‌بايست مادر همهٔ زندگان شود.
21خداوند لباسهايی از پوست حيوان تهيه كرد و آدم و همسرش را پوشانيد. 22سپس خداوند فرمود: «حال كه آدم مانند ما شده است و خوب و بد را می‌شناسد، نبايد گذاشت از ميوهٔ ”درخت حيات“ نيز بخورد و تا ابد زنده بماند.» 23پس خداوند او را از باغ عدن بيرون راند تا برود و در زمينی كه از خاکِ آن سرشته شده بود، كار كند. 24بدين ترتيب او آدم را بيرون كرد و در سمت شرقی باغ عدن فرشتگانی قرار داد تا با شمشير آتشينی كه به هر طرف می‌چرخيد، راه «درخت حيات» را محافظت كنند.
The Fall
1Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
2The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ”
4“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5“For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
8Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”
10He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”
11And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”
12The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
13Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”
The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
14So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,
“Cursed are you above all livestock
and all wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
and you will eat dust
all the days of your life.
15And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring3:15 Or seed and hers;
he will crush3:15 Or strike your head,
and you will strike his heel.”
16To the woman he said,
“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;
with painful labor you will give birth to children.
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you.”
17To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’
“Cursed is the ground because of you;
through painful toil you will eat food from it
all the days of your life.
18It will produce thorns and thistles for you,
and you will eat the plants of the field.
19By the sweat of your brow
you will eat your food
until you return to the ground,
since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
and to dust you will return.”

21The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. 22And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” 23So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side3:24 Or placed in front of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
