قائن و هابيل
1حوّا از آدم حامله شده، پسری زاييد. آنگاه حوّا گفت: «به كمک خداوند مردی حاصل نمودم.» پس نام او را قائن (يعنی «حاصل شده») گذاشت. 2حوّا بار ديگر حامله شده، پسری زاييد و نام او را هابيل گذاشت.
هابيل به گله‌داری پرداخت و قائن به كشاورزی مشغول شد. 3پس از مدتی، قائن هديه‌ای از حاصلِ زمينِ خود را به حضور خداوند آورد. 4هابيل نيز چند رأس از نخست‌زادگان گلهٔ خود را ذبح كرد و بهترين قسمت گوشت آنها را به خداوند تقديم نمود. خداوند هابيل و هديه‌اش را پذيرفت، 5اما قائن و هديه‌اش را قبول نكرد. پس قائن برآشفت و از شدت خشم سرش را به زير افكند.
6خداوند از قائن پرسيد: «چرا خشمگين شده‌ای و سرت را به زير افكنده‌ای؟ 7اگر درست عمل می‌كردی، آيا مقبول نمی‌شدی؟ اما چون چنين نكردی، گناه در كمين توست و می‌خواهد بر تو مسلط شود؛ ولی تو بر آن چيره شو!»
8روزی قائن از برادرش هابيل خواست كه با او به صحرا برود. هنگامی كه آنها در صحرا بودند، ناگهان قائن به برادرش حمله كرد و او را كشت.
9آنگاه خداوند از قائن پرسيد: «برادرت هابيل كجاست؟»
قائن جواب داد: «از كجا بدانم؟ مگر من نگهبان برادرم هستم؟»
10خداوند فرمود: «اين چه كاری بود كه كردی؟ خون برادرت از زمين نزد من فرياد برمی‌آورد. 11اكنون ملعون هستی و از زمينی كه با خون برادرت آن را رنگين كرده‌ای، طرد خواهی شد. 12از اين پس، هر چه كار كنی، ديگر زمين محصول خود را آنچنان كه بايد، به تو نخواهد داد، و تو در جهان آواره و پريشان خواهی بود.»
13قائن گفت: «مجازات من سنگينتر از آن است كه بتوانم تحمل كنم. 14امروز مرا از اين سرزمين و از حضور خودت می‌رانی و مرا در جهان آواره و پريشان می‌گردانی، پس هر كه مرا ببيند مرا خواهد كُشت.»
15خداوند جواب داد: «چنين نخواهد شد؛ زيرا هر كه تو را بكشد، مجازاتش هفت برابر شديدتر از مجازات تو خواهد بود.» سپس خداوند نشانی بر قائن گذاشت تا اگر كسی با او برخورد كند، او را نكشد. 16آنگاه قائن از حضور خداوند بيرون رفت و در زمين نُود (يعنی «سرگردانی») در سمت شرقی عدن ساكن شد.
17چندی بعد همسر قائن حامله شده، پسری به دنیا آورد و او را خَنوخ ناميدند. در آن موقع قائن سرگرم ساختن شهری بود، پس نام پسرش خنوخ را بر آن شهر گذاشت.
18خنوخ پدر عيراد، عيراد پدر محويائيل، محويائيل پدر متوشائيل و متوشائيل پدر لِمک بود. 19لِمک دو زن به نامهای عاده و ظله گرفت. 20عاده پسری زاييد و اسم او را يابال گذاشتند. او كسی بود كه خيمه‌نشينی و گله‌داری را رواج داد. 21برادرش يوبال اولين موسيقیدان و مخترع چنگ و نی بود. 22ظله، زنِ ديگر لمک هم پسری زاييد كه او را توبل قائن ناميدند. او كسی بود كه كار ساختن آلات آهنی و مسی را شروع كرد. خواهر توبل قائن، نَعمه نام داشت.
23روزی لمک به همسران خود، عاده و ظله، گفت: «ای زنان به من گوش كنيد. جوانی را كه مرا مجروح كرده بود، كُشتم. 24اگر قرار است مجازات كسی كه قائن را بكشد، هفت برابر مجازات قائن باشد، پس مجازات كسی هم كه بخواهد مرا بكشد، هفتاد و هفت برابر خواهد بود.»
25پس از آن، آدم و حوّا صاحب پسر ديگری شدند. حوّا گفت: «خدا به جای هابيل كه به دست برادرش قائن كشته شده بود، پسری ديگر به من عطا كرد.» پس نام او را شيث (يعنی «عطا شده») گذاشت.
26چون شيث بزرگ شد، برايش فرزندی به دنيا آمد كه او را انوش نام نهادند. در زمان انوش بود كه مردم شروع به عبادت خداوند نمودند.
Cain and Abel

Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. 4And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
6Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”
8Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”4:8 Samaritan Pentateuch, Septuagint, Vulgate and Syriac; Masoretic Text does not have “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
9Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”
“I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
10The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.”
13Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear. 14Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
15But the Lord said to him, “Not so4:15 Septuagint, Vulgate and Syriac; Hebrew Very well; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. 16So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence and lived in the land of Nod,4:16 Nod means wandering (see verses 12 and 14). east of Eden.
17Cain made love to his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch. 18To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.
19Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah. 20Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock. 21His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments and pipes. 22Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of4:22 Or who instructed all who work in bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain’s sister was Naamah.
23Lamech said to his wives,
“Adah and Zillah, listen to me;
wives of Lamech, hear my words.
I have killed a man for wounding me,
a young man for injuring me.
24If Cain is avenged seven times,
then Lamech seventy-seven times.”
25Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth,4:25 Seth probably means granted. saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.” 26Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh.
At that time people began to call on4:26 Or to proclaim the name of the Lord.
