Josia utlyser ett påskfirande
(2 Kung 23:21-23)
1Josia firade Herrens påsk i Jerusalem. De slaktade påsklammet den fjortonde dagen i första månaden. 2Han insatte också prästerna i deras uppgifter och uppmuntrade dem i deras tjänst i Herrens hus. 3Han sa till leviterna, som undervisade israeliterna och som var helgade åt Herren:
”Ställ den heliga arken i templet som Israels kung Salomo, Davids son, byggde. Ni behöver inte bära den på era axlar. Tjäna Herren, er Gud, och hans folk Israel! 4Gör er redo familjevis och avdelningsvis, så som Israels kung David och hans son Salomo föreskrev. 5Ställ er i helgedomen, med en grupp leviter för varje familjeavdelning av era bröder, era landsmän.35:5 Grundtexten är i denna vers svårförståelig och översättningen därmed osäker. 6Slakta påsklammet, helga er och tillred lammen åt era bröder, enligt de föreskrifter som Herren har gett genom Mose.”
7Därefter gav Josia 30 000 lamm och killingar till hela folkets påskoffer, för dem som var närvarande, och 3 000 tjurar, allt från kungens egendom. 8Hans furstar bidrog frivilligt med gåvor till folket, till prästerna och leviterna. Hilkia, Sakarja och Jechiel, de främsta i Guds hus, gav prästerna 2 600 får och getter som påskoffer och 300 tjurar. 9De levitiska ledarna Konanja, Shemaja, Netanel, Hashavja, Jeiel och Josavad gav 5 000 påskoffer och 500 tjurar till leviterna.
10Så ordnades tjänsten, och prästerna stod på sina platser och leviterna var indelade i sina avdelningar, som kungen hade befallt. 11De slaktade påsklammen, prästerna stänkte blodet som räcktes åt dem, och leviterna flådde djuren. 12De tog undan det som skulle vara brännoffer för varje familjeavdelning, för att ges åt hela folket och offras åt Herren, som det var föreskrivet i Moses bok, och på samma sätt gjorde de med tjurarna. 13De stekte påsklammet över eld enligt föreskrifterna och kokade de heliga offren i grytor, pannor och kittlar och gav dem genast till hela folket. 14Sedan gjorde de i ordning en måltid åt sig själva och åt prästerna, för prästerna, Arons söner, hade varit upptagna från morgonen ända till kvällen med att offra det feta av brännoffren. Därför tillredde leviterna åt sig själva och prästerna, Arons söner.
15Sångarna, Asafs söner, fanns på sina platser enligt föreskriften som hade getts av David, Asaf, Heman och Jedutun, kungens siare. Vakterna vid portarna lämnade inte sina platser. Deras bröder leviterna lagade måltiden åt dem. 16Hela tjänsten åt Herren genomfördes på denna dag, man firade påsk och offrade brännoffer på Herrens altare, som kung Josia hade föreskrivit.
17De israeliter som var samlade firade då påsk och det osyrade brödets högtid under sju dagar.
18Inte sedan profeten Samuels tid hade det varit ett sådant påskfirande i Israel. Ingen av Israels kungar hade firat en sådan påsk som firades av Josia, prästerna och leviterna och allt folk från Juda och Israel som var samlade och Jerusalems invånare. 19Det var under Josias artonde regeringsår som denna påsk firades.
Josia dör i strid
(2 Kung 23:28-30)
20Efter allt detta, när Josia hade satt templet i stånd, tågade kung Neko av Egypten ut för att strida vid Karkemish vid floden Eufrat, och Josia drog ut för att möta honom.
21Men Neko skickade sändebud till honom och lät säga: ”Vad vill du mig, kung av Juda? Jag har inte kommit mot dig idag utan mot dem jag är i krig mot. Gud har sagt åt mig att skynda på. Sluta nu med att sätta dig upp mot Gud, som är med mig, annars kommer han att förgöra dig!”
22Men Josia vägrade att vända tillbaka. I stället förklädde han sig för att strida mot honom. Han lyssnade inte till vad Neko sa på Guds befallning utan drog ut i strid på Megiddoslätten. 23Men bågskyttarna sköt kung Josia, och han bad sina män: ”Bär bort mig från striden. Jag är svårt sårad.” 24Hans män lyfte honom ur hans stridsvagn och lade honom i en annan vagn och förde honom tillbaka till Jerusalem, där han dog.
Han begravdes på sina fäders gravplats, och hela Juda och Jerusalem sörjde honom. 25Jeremia diktade en klagosång över Josia. Ända fram till denna dag sjunger sångare och sångerskor om hans död, för dessa klagosånger blev en tradition i Israel och har nedtecknats i ”Klagosångerna”.

20¶ After all this, when Josiah had prepared the temple, Necho king of Egypt came up to fight against Carchemish by Euphrates: and Josiah went out against him.35.20 temple: Heb. house 21But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make haste: forbear thee from meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not.35.21 the house…: Heb. the house of my war 22Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him, but disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and hearkened not unto the words of Necho from the mouth of God, and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo. 23And the archers shot at king Josiah; and the king said to his servants, Have me away; for I am sore wounded.35.23 wounded: Heb. made sick 24His servants therefore took him out of that chariot, and put him in the second chariot that he had; and they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died, and was buried in one of the sepulchres of his fathers.
