2Ascultați lucrul acesta, bătrânilor2, 14 Șefi de familii și de clanuri, recunoscuți ca autoritate la toate popoarele orientale. Ei aveau rol de (1) judecători în cadrul comunității locale (Deut. 19:12; 21:1-9, 18-21; 22:13-21; 25:5-10) sau de (2) lideri militari (Ios. 8:10). Ca instituție, Sfatul Bătrânilor lui Israel este atestat în special în perioada monarhiei, cu rol de consiliu (2 Sam. 3:17; 5:3; 17:4; 1 Regi 20:7).!
Luați aminte, toți locuitorii țării!

3Povestiți copiilor voștri despre lucrul acesta,

iar colții ei sunt colți de leoaică.
7Mi‑a pustiit viile
și mi‑a făcut bucăți smochinii;
i‑a jupuit de coajă și i‑a trântit jos,
lăsându‑le ramurile decojite.
8Bocește așa cum fecioara8 Sau: o femeie tânără., îmbrăcată cu sac,
bocește după bărbatul8 Sau: logodnicul. tinereții ei!
9Darurile de mâncare și jertfele de băutură
au fost oprite în Casa Domnului,
iar preoții, slujitorii Domnului, bocesc.
10Ogoarele sunt pustiite,
pământul bocește,
căci grânele sunt pustiite.
Mustul a secat
și uleiul s‑a terminat.
11Îngroziți‑vă, plugari,
gemeți, vieri,
din cauza grâului și a orzului,
căci roadele câmpului sunt distruse.
12Via s‑a uscat,
iar smochinul este veștejit;
rodiul, palmierul, mărul,
toți pomii de pe câmp sunt uscați.
Într-adevăr, s‑a veștejit bucuria
din mijlocul fiilor omului!
Chemare la pocăință
13Preoților, încingeți‑vă și jeliți!
Gemeți, slujitori ai altarului!
Veniți, înnoptați îmbrăcați cu saci,
slujitori ai Dumnezeului meu!
Căci darurile de mâncare și jertfele de băutură
sunt oprite în Casa Dumnezeului vostru.

Adunați‑i pe bătrâni,
pe toți locuitorii țării,
la Casa Domnului, Dumnezeul vostru,
și strigați către Domnul.
15Vai, ce zi!
Căci ziua Domnului este aproape;
ea va veni ca o distrugere de la Cel Atotputernic15 Ebr.: Șadai.
16Nu s‑a prăpădit hrana
sub ochii voștri –
adică bucuria și veselia
din Casa Dumnezeului nostru?
17Semințele s‑au pârjolit sub bulgări17 Sensul termenului ebraic este nesigur.,
hambarele sunt pustii,
grânarele sunt în dărâmate,
căci grânele s‑au uscat.
18Cum suspină animalele!
Cirezile de vite umblă amețite,
pentru că nu mai au pășune;
chiar și turmele de oi suferă pedeapsa18 Sau, cf. LXX: sunt nimicite..
19Către Tine, Doamne, strig,
căci focul a mistuit pășunile pustiei
și flăcările au ars toți copacii câmpiei.
20Chiar și fiarele câmpului tânjesc după Tine,

Locusts Attack the Land
2Elders, listen to me.
Pay attention, all you who live in the land.
Has anything like this ever happened in your whole life?
Did it ever happen to your people
who lived long ago?
3Tell your children about it.
Let them tell their children.
And let their children tell it
to those who live after them.
4The giant locusts have eaten
what the common locusts have left.
The young locusts have eaten
what the giant locusts have left.
And other locusts have eaten
what the young locusts have left.
5Get up and weep, you people who drink too much!
Cry, all you who drink wine!
Cry because the fresh wine
has been taken away from you.
6The locusts are like a mighty army
that has marched into our land.
There are so many of them
they can’t even be counted.
Their teeth are as sharp as a lion’s teeth.
They are like the fangs of a female lion.
7The locusts have completely destroyed our vines.
They have wiped out our fig trees.
They’ve stripped off the bark and thrown it away.
They’ve left the branches bare.
8My people, mourn like a virgin
who is dressed in the clothes of sadness.

A Call to Mourn
13Priests, put on the clothing of sadness and mourn.
Cry, you who serve at the altar.
Come, you who serve my God in the temple.
Spend the night dressed in the clothes of sadness.
Weep because no one brings grain offerings and drink offerings
to the house of your God anymore.
14Announce a holy fast.
Tell the people not to eat anything.
Gather them together for a special service.
Send for the elders
and all who live in the land.
Have them come to the house of the Lord your God.
And pray to him.
15The day of the Lord is near.
How sad it will be on that day!
The Mighty One is coming to destroy you.
16Our food has been taken away
right in front of our eyes.
There isn’t any joy or gladness
in the house of our God.
17The seeds have dried up in the ground.
The grain is also gone.

18Listen to the cattle groan!
The herds wander around.
They don’t have any grass to eat.
