David îi cruță viața lui Saul
1Când Saul s‑a întors de la urmărirea filistenilor, l‑au înștiințat, zicând: „David se află în pustia En‑Ghedi.“ 2Atunci Saul a luat din tot Israelul trei mii de bărbați aleși și a plecat în căutarea lui David și a oamenilor săi, la răsărit de Stâncile Țapilor Sălbatici. 3A ajuns la stânile de oi, care se aflau lângă drum. Acolo era o peșteră, iar Saul a intrat în ea să‑și acopere picioarele3 Eufemism ebraic cu sensul: pentru nevoile sale (vezi și Jud. 3:24).. David și oamenii lui se aflau la capătul peșterii.
4Oamenii lui David i‑au zis:
– Iată ziua despre care ți‑a spus Domnul: „Iată, îl dau pe dușmanul tău în mâinile tale, iar tu să‑i faci ce consideri că este bine.4 Lit.: să‑i faci ceea ce este bine în ochii tăi.“
David s‑a ridicat și a tăiat pe furiș colțul mantiei lui Saul. 5După aceea însă pe David l‑a mustrat cugetul pentru că tăiase colțul mantiei lui Saul.
6El le‑a zis oamenilor săi:
– Să mă ferească Domnul să fac un asemenea lucru stăpânului meu, care este unsul Domnului, și anume să îmi ridic mâna asupra lui. Doar este unsul Domnului!
7Cu aceste cuvinte David i‑a oprit pe oamenii săi și nu i‑a lăsat să‑l atace pe Saul. Apoi Saul s‑a sculat, a părăsit peștera și și‑a continuat drumul. 8După aceea s‑a ridicat și David și a ieșit din peșteră.
El a strigat după Saul, zicând:
– O, rege, stăpânul meu!
Când Saul s‑a uitat în urma sa, David s‑a plecat cu fața la pământ și s‑a închinat.
9Apoi David i‑a zis lui Saul:
– De ce asculți cuvintele oamenilor care spun că David dorește să‑ți facă rău? 10Iată, în ziua aceasta ochii tăi au văzut că Domnul te‑a dat în mâna mea, chiar astăzi, în peșteră. Mi s‑a spus să te ucid, dar eu am avut milă de tine și am hotărât să nu ridic mâna asupra stăpânului meu pentru că el este unsul Domnului. 11Privește, părintele meu, privește colțul mantiei tale în mâna mea! Prin faptul că am tăiat colțul mantiei tale și nu te‑am ucis, să înțelegi și să recunoști că nu sunt vinovat de răutate sau de fărădelege și că nu am păcătuit împotriva ta. Cu toate acestea, tu mă pândești ca să‑mi iei viața. 12Domnul să judece între mine și tine și Domnul să mă răzbune față de tine. Mâna mea însă nu va fi împotriva ta. 13Așa cum spune vechiul proverb: „Răutatea de la cei răi iese.“ Mâna mea însă nu va fi împotriva ta. 14După cine a ieșit regele lui Israel? Pe cine urmărești? Un câine mort? Un singur purice? 15Domnul să fie judecător și să judece între mine și tine! Să privească, să‑mi susțină cauza și să mă izbăvească din mâna ta!
16Când David a terminat de spus aceste cuvinte lui Saul, acesta a zis:
– Tu ești, cu adevărat, fiul meu David?
Apoi a plâns cu voce tare, 17zicându‑i lui David:
– Tu ești mai drept decât mine, pentru că tu m‑ai tratat bine, chiar dacă eu te‑am tratat rău. 18Astăzi ai dovedit bunătate față de mine pentru că, deși Domnul mă dăduse în mâna ta, tu nu m‑ai ucis. 19Dacă un om își întâlnește dușmanul, oare îi dă drumul cu bine? Domnul să‑ți răsplătească astăzi cu bine ceea ce ai făcut pentru mine! 20Acum, știu sigur că tu vei domni și că tronul lui Israel va fi al tău! 21Jură‑mi pe Domnul că nu îi vei stârpi pe urmașii mei după mine și că nu îmi vei șterge numele din familia tatălui meu.
22David i‑a jurat lui Saul, după care Saul a plecat acasă. În timpul acesta David cu oamenii săi s‑au suit în fortăreață22 Vezi nota de la 22:4..
David Spares Saul’s Life
In Hebrew texts 24:1-22 is numbered 24:22-23. 1After Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, “David is in the Desert of En Gedi.” 2So Saul took three thousand able young men from all Israel and set out to look for David and his men near the Crags of the Wild Goats.
3He came to the sheep pens along the way; a cave was there, and Saul went in to relieve himself. David and his men were far back in the cave. 4The men said, “This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said24:4 Or “Today the Lord is saying to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.’ ” Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.
5Afterward, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe. 6He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.” 7With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way.
8Then David went out of the cave and called out to Saul, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground. 9He said to Saul, “Why do you listen when men say, ‘David is bent on harming you’? 10This day you have seen with your own eyes how the Lord delivered you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you; I said, ‘I will not lay my hand on my lord, because he is the Lord’s anointed.’ 11See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. See that there is nothing in my hand to indicate that I am guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion. I have not wronged you, but you are hunting me down to take my life. 12May the Lord judge between you and me. And may the Lord avenge the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you. 13As the old saying goes, ‘From evildoers come evil deeds,’ so my hand will not touch you.
14“Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Who are you pursuing? A dead dog? A flea? 15May the Lord be our judge and decide between us. May he consider my cause and uphold it; may he vindicate me by delivering me from your hand.”
16When David finished saying this, Saul asked, “Is that your voice, David my son?” And he wept aloud. 17“You are more righteous than I,” he said. “You have treated me well, but I have treated you badly. 18You have just now told me about the good you did to me; the Lord delivered me into your hands, but you did not kill me. 19When a man finds his enemy, does he let him get away unharmed? May the Lord reward you well for the way you treated me today. 20I know that you will surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands. 21Now swear to me by the Lord that you will not kill off my descendants or wipe out my name from my father’s family.”
22So David gave his oath to Saul. Then Saul returned home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.
