Rugăciunea Anei
1Ana s‑a rugat, zicând:
„Mi se bucură inima în Domnul,
cornul1, 10 Coarnele sunt armele de bază și ornamentele unui animal, mărimea și condiția acestora fiind indiciul puterii, al poziției și al sănătății/virilității lui. Prin urmare, cornul a ajuns să reprezinte în Biblie puterea, demnitatea și autoritatea, precum și victoria în luptă. În multe basoreliefuri mesopotamieme regii și zeitățile apar purtând coroane cu coarne pe ele. De asemenea, cornul se referă și la posteritate, la urmașii cuiva (vezi 2 Sam. 2:1; 1 Cron. 25:5; Ps. 132:17). îmi este înălțat în Domnul,
iar gura mea este larg deschisă împotriva dușmanilor mei,
căci mă bucur de izbăvirea Ta.
2Nimeni nu este sfânt ca Domnul,
căci nu este niciun Dumnezeu în afară de Tine,
nu este stâncă precum Dumnezeul nostru.
3Nu mai vorbiți cu atâta mândrie
și să nu mai iasă aroganță din gura voastră,
căci Domnul este un Dumnezeu al cunoașterii
și Unul Care cântărește faptele.
4Arcul celor viteji se înspăimântă,
iar cei care se împiedică sunt încinși cu putere.
5Cei care erau sătui se închiriază pentru pâine,
iar cei care erau flămânzi încetează a mai flămânzi.
Cea stearpă naște șapte fii,
pe când cea care are mulți copii se ofilește.
6Domnul dă la moarte și tot El aduce la viață;
El coboară în Locuința Morților6 Ebr.: Șeol și tot El ridică.
7Domnul duce la sărăcie și tot El îmbogățește;
El coboară și tot El înalță.
8El îl ridică din praf pe cel sărac,
și îl înalță din grămada de cenușă pe cel nevoiaș,
ca să‑i așeze la un loc cu nobilii
și să le dea drept moștenire un tron al slavei.
Căci ai Domnului sunt stâlpii pământului
și pe ei a așezat El lumea.
9El păzește pașii credincioșilor Săi,
însă ticăloșii vor fi reduși la tăcere în întuneric,
pentru că nu prin putere va învinge omul.
10Dușmanii Domnului vor fi zdrobiți;
El va tuna din ceruri împotriva lor.
Domnul va judeca marginile pământului,
va da tărie împăratului Său
și va înălța cornul unsului Său.“
11După aceea, Elkana a plecat acasă, la Rama, iar băiatul slujea Domnului în prezența preotului Eli.
Ticăloșia fiilor lui Eli
12Fiii lui Eli erau niște oameni de nimic12 Lit.: fiii lui Belial. Sensul literal al termenului Belial este fără folos(ință), fără utilitate (bun de nimic). În sens lărgit, termenul se poate traduce cu ticălos, netrebnic. Vezi și nota din 2 Cor. 6:15.. Ei nu‑L cunoșteau pe Domnul. 13Obiceiul preoților față de popor era acesta: slujitorul preotului venea, în timp ce se fierbea carnea, la fiecare om care își aducea jertfa și, ținând în mână o furculiță cu trei dinți, 14o băga în tigaie, în cratiță, în cazan sau în oală, și tot ceea ce era apucat cu furculița, preotul lua pentru sine. În felul acesta făceau cu toți cei din Israel care veneau acolo, la Șilo. 15Pe lângă aceasta, înainte de a arde grăsimea,15 Cf. Lev. 3:16; 4:8-10, 26, 31, 35; 7:28, 30-31; 17:6. slujitorul preotului venea și îi spunea omului care jertfea: „Dă pentru preot carne de fript, căci el nu va lua de la tine carne fiartă, ci doar crudă!“ 16Dacă omul îi răspundea: „Să ardem mai întâi grăsimea, iar după aceea vei lua atât cât dorești“, slujitorul îi spunea: „Chiar acum trebuie să dai! Dacă nu, voi lua cu forța!“ 17Păcatul acestor tineri era foarte mare înaintea Domnului, pentru că disprețuiau darurile de mâncare ale Domnului.
18Samuel însă slujea înaintea Domnului; și copilul acesta era încins cu un efod de in. 19Mama sa îi făcea în fiecare an câte o mantie mică pe care i‑o aducea atunci când se suia împreună cu soțul ei pentru a aduce jertfa anuală. 20Eli binecuvânta pe Elkana și pe soția acestuia, zicând: „Să‑ți dea Domnul urmași20 Lit.: sămânță. din femeia aceasta, în schimbul celui pe care ea l‑a oferit Domnului.“ Apoi ei plecau acasă. 21Domnul a cercetat‑o pe Ana, iar aceasta a rămas însărcinată și a născut trei fii și două fiice. Cât despre tânărul Samuel, el creștea în prezența Domnului.
22Eli era foarte bătrân. El a auzit tot ce făceau fiii lui cu întregul Israel și cum se culcau cu femeile care slujeau la intrarea Cortului Întâlnirii. 23Eli le‑a zis: „Pentru ce faceți aceste lucruri? Am auzit despre faptele voastre rele de la întregul popor. 24Nu, fiii mei! Nu este bine ceea ce aud zicându‑se despre voi în poporul Domnului. 25Dacă un om păcătuiește împotriva altui om, poate Dumnezeu îi va lua apărarea. Dar dacă un om păcătuiește împotriva Domnului, cine va interveni pentru el?“ Dar ei n‑au ascultat de glasul tatălui lor, căci Domnul dorea să‑i omoare.
26Băiatul Samuel însă continua să crească și era plăcut atât Domnului, cât și oamenilor.
Vestirea pedepsei împotriva familiei lui Eli
27Un om al lui Dumnezeu a venit la Eli și i‑a zis: „Așa vorbește Domnul: «Nu M‑am descoperit Eu familiei tatălui tău atunci când erau în Egipt, în Casa lui Faraon? 28Nu l‑am ales pe el dintre toate semințiile lui Israel ca să fie preotul Meu, să se suie la altarul Meu, să ardă tămâia și să poarte efodul înaintea Mea? Nu am dat eu familiei tatălui tău toate jertfele mistuite de foc ale fiilor lui Israel? 29De ce călcați voi în picioare jertfa și darul Meu de mâncare, pe care am poruncit să fie aduse în Locuința Mea și cum de i‑ai onorat pe fiii tăi mai mult decât pe Mine, îngrășându‑vă voi înșivă din partea aleasă a fiecărui dar de mâncare adus de poporul Meu, Israel?»
30De aceea așa vorbește Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel: «Am promis cu privire la familia ta și la familia tatălui tău că vor umbla înaintea Mea pentru totdeauna. Acum însă, zice Domnul, departe de Mine lucrul acesta! Voi cinsti doar pe cei care Mă cinstesc, însă cei care Mă disprețuiesc vor fi disprețuiți. 31Iată că vin zilele când voi reteza puterea ta și puterea familiei tatălui tău, astfel încât nu va mai fi niciun bătrân în familia ta. 32Vei vedea necazul Locuinței Mele. Israel va avea parte de tot binele, însă în familia ta nu va mai fi niciodată vreun bătrân. 33Fiecăruia dintre ai tăi, pe care nu‑l voi nimici de la altarul Meu, i se vor topi ochii și i se va întrista sufletul. Toți ceilalți din casa ta vor muri în floarea vârstei33 Sau: vor muri ca niște oameni de rând (lit.: vor muri oameni)..
34Și acesta va fi pentru tine semnul care va veni asupra celor doi fii ai tăi, asupra lui Hofni și Fineas: amândoi vor muri într‑o singură zi. 35Eu Îmi voi ridica un preot credincios care va lucra după inima Mea și după sufletul Meu. Eu Însumi îi voi ridica acestuia o Casă trainică, iar el va umbla înaintea unsului Meu pentru totdeauna. 36Oricine va mai rămâne din familia ta va veni să se plece înaintea lui pentru o bucățică de argint36 Sau: siclu, greutate de bază, comună la toate popoarele semite antice. Existau mai multe tipuri de șechel: regal (2 Sam. 14:26; aproximativ 13 gr), obișnuit (aproximativ 12 gr) și cel al Lăcașului (aproximativ 10 gr). Greutatea șechelului a variat în diferite vremuri și în diferite zone. și pentru o fărâmă de pâine și va zice: ‘Pune‑mă, te rog, într‑una din slujbele preoțești, ca să mănânc și eu o bucată de pâine.’»“
Hannah’s Prayer
1Then Hannah prayed. She said,
“The Lord has filled my heart with joy.
He has made me strong.
I can laugh at my enemies.
I’m so glad he saved me.
2“There isn’t anyone holy like the Lord.
There isn’t anyone except him.
There isn’t any Rock like our God.
3“Don’t keep talking so proudly.
Don’t let your mouth say such proud things.
The Lord is a God who knows everything.
He judges everything people do.
4“The bows of great heroes are broken.
But those who trip and fall are made strong.
5Those who used to be full have to work for food.
But those who used to be hungry aren’t hungry anymore.
The woman who couldn’t have children has seven of them now.
But the woman who has had many children is sad now because hers have died.
6“The Lord causes people to die. He also gives people life.
He brings people down to the grave. He also brings people up from death.
7The Lord makes people poor. He also makes people rich.
He brings people down. He also lifts people up.
8He raises poor people up from the trash pile.
He lifts needy people out of the ashes.
He lets them sit with princes.
He gives them places of honor.
“The foundations of the earth belong to the Lord.
On them he has set the world.
9He guards the paths of his faithful servants.
But evil people will lie silent in their dark graves.
“People don’t win just because they are strong.
10Those who oppose the Lord will be totally destroyed.
The Most High God will thunder from heaven.
The Lord will judge the earth from one end to the other.
“He will give power to his king.
He will give honor to his anointed one.”
11Then Elkanah went home to Ramah. But the boy Samuel served the Lord under the direction of Eli the priest.
Eli’s Evil Sons
12Eli’s sons were good for nothing. They didn’t honor the Lord. 13When any of the people came to offer a sacrifice, here is what the priests would do. While the meat was being boiled, the servant of the priest would come with a large fork in his hand. 14He would stick the fork into the pan or pot or small or large kettle. Then the priest would take for himself everything the fork brought up. That’s how Eli’s sons treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh. 15Even before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come over. He would speak to the person who was offering the sacrifice. He would say, “Give the priest some meat to cook. He won’t accept boiled meat from you. He’ll only accept raw meat.”
16Sometimes the person would say to him, “Let the fat be burned first. Then take what you want.” But the servant would answer, “No. Hand it over right now. If you don’t, I’ll take it away from you by force.”
17That sin of Eli’s sons was very great in the Lord’s sight. That’s because they were not treating his offering with respect.
18But the boy Samuel served the Lord. He wore a sacred linen apron. 19Each year his mother made him a little robe. She took it to him when she went up to Shiloh with her husband. She did it when her husband went to offer the yearly sacrifice. 20Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife. He would say, “May the Lord give you children by this woman. May they take the place of the boy she prayed for and gave to the Lord.” Then they would go home. 21The Lord was gracious to Hannah. Over a period of years she had three more sons and two daughters. During that whole time the boy Samuel grew up serving the Lord.
22Eli was very old. He kept hearing about everything his sons were doing to all the Israelites. He also heard how his sons were sleeping with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 23So Eli said to his sons, “Why are you doing these things? All the people are telling me about the evil things you are doing. 24No, my sons. The report I hear isn’t good. And it’s spreading among the Lord’s people. 25If a person sins against someone else, God can help that sinner. But if anyone sins against the Lord, who can help them?” In spite of what their father Eli said, his sons didn’t pay any attention to his warning. That’s because the Lord had already decided to put them to death.
26The boy Samuel continued to grow stronger. He also became more and more pleasing to the Lord and to people.
Prophecy Against Eli’s Family
27A man of God came to Eli. He told him, “The Lord says, ‘I made myself clearly known to your relatives who lived long ago. I did it when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh’s rule. 28At that time, I chose Aaron from your family line to be my priest. I chose him out of all the tribes of Israel. I told him to go up to my altar. I told him to burn incense. I chose him to wear a linen apron when he served me. I also gave his family all the food offerings presented by the Israelites. 29Why don’t you treat my sacrifices and offerings with respect? I require them to be brought to the house where I live. Why do you honor your sons more than me? Why do you fatten yourselves on the best parts of every offering that is made by my people Israel?’
30“The Lord is the God of Israel. He announced, ‘I promised that members of your family line would serve me as priests forever.’ But now the Lord announces, ‘I will not let that happen! I will honor those who honor me. But I will turn away from those who look down on me. 31The time is coming when I will cut your life short. I will also cut short the lives of those in your family line of priests. No one in your family line will grow old. 32You will see nothing but trouble in the house where I live. Good things will still happen to Israel. But no one in your family line will ever grow old. 33I will prevent the members of your family from serving me at my altar. I will destroy the eyesight of all of you I allow to live. I will also cause you to lose your strength. And everyone in your family line will die while they are still young.
34“ ‘Something is going to happen to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas. When it does, it will show you that what I am saying is true. They will both die on the same day. 35I will raise up for myself a faithful priest. He will do what my heart and mind want him to do. I will make his family line of priests very secure. They will always serve as priests to my anointed king. 36Everyone left in your family line will come and bow down to him. They will beg him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread. They will say, “Please give me a place to serve among the priests. Then I can have food to eat.” ’ ”
