A warning against hypocrisy
1Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 2‘The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practise what they preach. 4They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
5‘Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries23:5 That is, boxes containing Scripture verses, worn on forehead and arm wide and the tassels on their garments long; 6they love the place of honour at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; 7they love to be greeted with respect in the market-places and to be called “Rabbi” by others.
8‘But you are not to be called “Rabbi”, for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9And do not call anyone on earth “father”, for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. 10Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. 11The greatest among you will be your servant. 12For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
Seven woes on the teachers of the law and the Pharisees
13‘Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to. 1423:14 Some manuscripts include here words similar to Mark 12:40 and Luke 20:47.
15‘Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are.
16‘Woe to you, blind guides! You say, “If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.” 17You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? 18You also say, “If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.” 19You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. 22And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it.
23‘Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices – mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law – justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practised the latter, without neglecting the former. 24You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
25‘Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
27‘Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
29‘Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. 30And you say, “If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.” 31So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. 32Go ahead, then, and complete what your ancestors started!
33‘You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? 34Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town. 35And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36Truly I tell you, all this will come upon this generation.
37‘Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. 38Look, your house is left to you desolate. 39For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.”23:39 Psalm 118:26’
تظاهر به دينداری
1آنگاه عيسی خطاب به مردم و شاگردانش فرمود: 2«علمای مذهبی و فريسيان بر كرسی موسی نشسته‌اند و احكام او را تفسير می‌كنند. 3پس آنچه به شما تعليم می‌دهند، بجا آوريد، اما هيچگاه از اعمالشان سرمشق نگيريد، زيرا هرگز به تعاليمی كه می‌دهند، خودشان عمل نمی‌كنند. 4ايشان احكام دينی را همچون بارهای سنگينی بر دوش شما می‌گذارند، اما خودشان حاضر نيستند آنها را بجا آورند.
5«هر كاری می‌كنند، برای تظاهر است. دعاها و آيه‌های كتاب آسمانی را می‌نويسند و به بازويشان می‌بندند، و دامن رداهايشان را عمداً بلندتر می‌دوزند تا جلب توجه كنند و مردم آنان را ديندار بدانند. 6چقدر دوست می‌دارند كه در ميهمانی‌ها ايشان را در صدر مجلس بنشانند، و در عبادتگاه‌ها هميشه در رديف جلو قرار گيرند. 7چه لذتی می‌برند كه مردم در كوچه و خيابان، ايشان را تعظيم كنند و به آنان ”آقا“ و ”استاد“ گويند. 8اما شما چنين القابی را از مردم نپذيريد، چون شما يک استاد داريد و همهٔ شما با هم برابر و برادريد. 9همچنين، هيچكس را بر روی زمين ”پدر“ نگوييد، چون شما يک ”پدر آسمانی“ داريد كه خداست. 10و نگذاريد كسی شما را ”پيشوا“ بخواند، چون يک پيشوا داريد كه مسيح است.
11«هر چه بيشتر به ديگران خدمت كنيد، بزرگتر خواهيد بود، زيرا بزرگی در خدمت كردن است. 12كسی كه خود را بزرگ می‌پندارد، پست و كوچک خواهد شد و كسی كه فروتن می‌باشد، بزرگ و سربلند خواهد گشت.
13-14«وای به حال شما، ای علمای دينی و فريسيان! چقدر رياكاريد! نه می‌گذاريد ديگران به ملكوت خداوند وارد شوند و نه خود وارد می‌شويد. نماز خود را عمداً طولانی می‌كنيد تا مردم شما را ديندار بدانند، ولی دور از چشم ديگران، اموال بيوه‌زنان بيچاره را می‌خوريد. ای دوروها! 15وای به حال شما! همه جا را زير پا می‌گذاريد تا كسی را پيدا كنيد كه مريد شما شود؛ و وقتی موفق شديد، او را دو برابر بدتر از خودتان سزاوار جهنم می‌سازيد.
16«وای به حال شما ای عصاكش‌های كور! زيرا می‌گوييد: اشكالی ندارد كسی به خانهٔ خدا قسم بخورد چون می‌تواند قسمش را بشكند؛ ولی كسی كه به ظرفهای طلايی كه در خانهٔ خدا هست، قسم بخورد بايد آن را حتماً وفا كند. 17ای نادانان! ای نابينايان! كدام مهمتر است، طلا يا خانهٔ خدا كه طلا را تقديس می‌كند؟
18«می‌گوييد قسم به قربانگاه را می‌شود شكست، ولی قسم به هديهٔ روی قربانگاه را بايد حتماً وفا كرد. 19ای احمقهای كور! كدام مهمتر است هديه‌ای كه روی قربانگاه است يا خود قربانگاه كه هديه را تقديس می‌كند؟ 20وقتی به قربانگاه قسم می‌خوريد، در واقع به خود قربانگاه و هر چه كه بر آن است قسم می‌خوريد؛ 21و وقتی به خانهٔ خدا قسم می‌خوريد، به خود خانه و به خدايی كه در آن خانه هست قسم می‌خوريد؛ 22و وقتی به آسمان قسم می‌خوريد، در واقع به تخت خدا و خود خدا كه بر تخت نشسته است قسم می‌خوريد.
23«وای به حال شما ای علمای دينی و فريسيان رياكار! شما حتی ده يک محصول نعناع و شِويد و زيره باغچه‌تان را زكات می‌دهيد، اما از طرف ديگر مهمترين احكام خدا را كه نيكويی، گذشت و صداقت است فراموش كرده‌ايد. شما بايد ده يک را بدهيد، ولی احكام مهمتر خدا را نيز فراموش نكنيد. 24ای عصاكش‌های كور، كه پشه را از صافی می‌گذرانيد ولی شتر را می‌بلعيد!
25«وای به حال شما ای علمای دينی و فريسيان رياكار! چون شما بيرون ظرف را آنقدر تميز می‌كنيد تا بدرخشد، ولی داخل ظرف از كثافت ظلم و طمع پر است. 26ای فريسی‌های كور، اول داخل ظرف را تميز كنيد تا بيرون ظرف هم پاک شود.
27«وای به حال شما ای علمای دينی و فريسيان رياكار! شما مانند قبرهای سفيد شده‌ای هستيد كه ظاهری زيبا دارند اما داخل آن پر است از استخوانهای مردگان و كثافات! 28شما می‌كوشيد خود را ديندار جلوه دهيد، ولی در زير آن عبای مقدستان، دلهايی داريد پر از ريا و گناه.
29-30«وای به حالتان ای علمای دينی و فريسيان رياكار! شما برای پيامبرانی كه اجدادتان كشتند، با دست خود بنای يادبود می‌سازيد، و قبر مقدسينی را كه به دست آنان كشته شدند، تزئين می‌كنيد و می‌گوييد: اگر ما به جای اجدادمان بوديم، پيامبران را نمی‌كشتيم.
31«اما با اين گفته، به زبان خود اعلام می‌داريد كه فرزندان قاتلان انبیا هستيد. 32شما قدم به قدم از آنان پيروی می‌كنيد؛ شما در اعمال بد، از ايشان پيشی گرفته‌ايد. 33ای مارهای خوش خط و خال! چگونه می‌توانيد از مجازات جهنم جان به در ببريد؟
34«من، انبيا و مردان حكيم و روحانی را به سوی شما می‌فرستم، و شما بعضی را به دار خواهيد كشيد و بعضی را در عبادتگاه‌های خود زير ضربه‌های شلاق گرفته، شهر به شهر آواره خواهيد كرد. 35به اين ترتيب، خون مردم بی‌گناهی كه شهيد شده‌اند، به گردن شما خواهد بود، از هابيل معصوم گرفته تا زكريا پسر برخيا كه او را در داخل خانهٔ خدا، بين عبادتگاه و قربانگاه كشتيد. 36باور كنيد گناه تمام اين كارها به گردن اين نسل خواهد بود.
عيسی ويرانی اورشليم را پيشگويی می‌كند
37«ای اورشليم، ای اورشليم، ای شهری كه پيامبران را كشتی و رسولان خدا را سنگسار كردی! چند بار خواستم فرزندان تو را جمع كنم همانطور كه مرغ جوجه‌های خود را زير بال خود می‌گيرد، اما تو نخواستی. 38و حال، خانهٔ شما برای شما ويران می‌ماند. 39اين را نيز به شما بگويم كه ديگر مرا نخواهيد ديد تا وقتی كه آماده باشيد كسی را كه خدا برای شما می‌فرستد بپذيريد.»
