The demand for a sign
1The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.
2He replied, ‘When evening comes, you say, “It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,” 3and in the morning, “Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.” You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.16:2,3 Some early manuscripts do not have When evening comes… of the times. 4A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.’ Jesus then left them and went away.
The yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees
5When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. 6‘Be careful,’ Jesus said to them. ‘Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’
7They discussed this among themselves and said, ‘It is because we didn’t bring any bread.’
8Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, ‘You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? 9Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? 10Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? 11How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’ 12Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Peter declares that Jesus is the Messiah
13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’
14They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’
15‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’
16Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’
17Jesus replied, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18And I tell you that you are Peter,16:18 The Greek word for Peter means rock. and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades16:18 That is, the realm of the dead will not overcome it. 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be16:19 Or will have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be16:19 Or will have been loosed in heaven.’ 20Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
Jesus predicts his death
21From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
22Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. ‘Never, Lord!’ he said. ‘This shall never happen to you!’
23Jesus turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling-block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.’
24Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25For whoever wants to save their life16:25 The Greek word means either life or soul; also in verse 26. will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. 26What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.
28‘Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.’

まちがった教え
1ある日、パリサイ人やサドカイ人たちがイエスのところに来て、天からのすばらしい奇跡を見せてほしいと頼みました。メシヤだと自称するイエスの主張がほんとうかどうかを、試してやろうと思ったのです。
2-3イエスの返事はこうでした。「あなたがたは、天気を予測するのが得意です。夕焼けになると、『明日は晴れだ』と言うし、朝焼けを見ると、『今日は荒れ模様だ』と言います。そんなに上手に空模様を見分けるのに、これほどはっきりした時代の兆候が読み取れないのですか。 4今の邪悪な不信の時代は、不思議なしるしが天に現れることばかり求めています。しかし、ヨナの身に起こった奇跡以外に神からの証拠は与えられません。」そしてイエスは、彼らを残したまま去って行かれました。
5一行は湖の向こう岸へ渡りましたが、食べ物を持って来るのを忘れていました。
6イエスは、「パリサイ人とサドカイ人のパン種に気をつけなさい」と忠告しましたが、 7弟子たちはパンを忘れてきたので、自分たちをしかっておられるのだろうと勘違いしました。
8それに気づいたイエスは言われました。「ああ、信仰の薄い人たちよ。なぜそんなに、食べ物を持って来なかったことを気に病むのですか。 9まだわからないのですか。五つのパンを五千人に食べさせた時、幾かごものパンが余ったではありませんか。 10また四千人に食べさせた時も、たくさんのパンが余りました。 11パンのことなど問題ではないことが、どうしてわからないのですか。もう一度、はっきり言いましょう。わたしは、『パリサイ人とサドカイ人のパン種に気をつけなさい』と言ったのです。」
12それでやっと弟子たちにも、パン種とは、パリサイ人やサドカイ人のまちがった教えのことだとわかったのです。
わたしはだれか
13ピリポ・カイザリヤに行った時、イエスは弟子たちに、「みんなは、わたしのことをだれだと言っていますか」とお尋ねになりました。
14弟子たちは答えました。「バプテスマのヨハネだと言う人もいますし、エリヤだと言う人もいます。また、エレミヤだとか、ほかの預言者の一人だとか言う人もいます。」
15「では、あなたがたは、どうなのですか。」
16シモン・ペテロが答えました。「あなたこそキリスト（ギリシャ語で、救い主）です。生ける神の子です。」
17「ヨナの息子シモンよ。神があなたを祝福してくださったのです。それを明らかにしたのは、人ではなく、天におられるわたしの父です。 18あなたはペテロ（岩）です。わたしはこの大きな岩の上にわたしの教会を建てます。地獄のどんな恐ろしい力も、わたしの教会に打ち勝つことはできません。 19あなたに天国のかぎをあげましょう。あなたが地上でかぎをかけるなら、天でも閉じられ、あなたが地上でかぎを開けるなら、天でも開かれるのです。」
20このあとイエスは、ご自分がキリストであることをほかの人に話してはいけない、と弟子たちに注意なさいました。
21その時からイエスは、ご自分がエルサレムに行くことと、そこでご自分の身に起こること、すなわち、ユダヤ人の指導者たちの手でひどく苦しめられ、殺され、そして三日目に復活することを、はっきり弟子たちに話し始められました。
22ところが、ペテロはイエスをわきへ呼んでいさめました。「先生。とんでもないことです。あなたのようなお方に、そんなことが起こってなるものですか！」
23しかし、イエスはふり向いて、「サタンよ。下がれ。そのようなことを言って、わたしをわなにかける気ですか。あなたは人間的な見方をして、神の見方を忘れている」とおしかりになりました。
24それから、弟子たちに言われました。「だれでもわたしの弟子になりたければ、自分を捨て、自分の十字架を負って、わたしについて来なさい。 25いのちを大事にする者は、いのちを失うことになります。しかし、わたしのためにいのちを投げ出す者は、それをもう一度自分のものにできるのです。 26たとえ、全世界を自分のものにしても、永遠のいのちを失ってしまったら、何の得になるでしょう。いったい、永遠のいのちほど価値のあるものが、ほかにあるでしょうか。 27メシヤのわたしは、やがて、父の栄光を帯びて、天使たちと共にやって来ます。そして、一人一人を、その行いによってさばくのです。 28今ここにいる者の中には、生きているうちに、わたしが御国の力を帯びて来るのを、その目で見る者がいます。」
