That which defiles
1Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2‘Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!’
3Jesus replied, ‘And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4For God said, “Honour your father and mother”15:4 Exodus 20:12; Deut. 5:16 and “Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.”15:4 Exodus 21:17; Lev. 20:9 5But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is “devoted to God,” 6they are not to “honour their father or mother” with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:
8‘ “These people honour me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
9They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.”15:9 Isaiah 29:13’
10Jesus called the crowd to him and said, ‘Listen and understand. 11What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.’
12Then the disciples came to him and asked, ‘Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?’
13He replied, ‘Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. 14Leave them; they are blind guides.15:14 Some manuscripts blind guides of the blind If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.’
15Peter said, ‘Explain the parable to us.’
16‘Are you still so dull?’ Jesus asked them. 17‘Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. 19For out of the heart come evil thoughts – murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.’
The faith of a Canaanite woman
21Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, ‘Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.’
23Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, ‘Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.’
24He answered, ‘I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.’
25The woman came and knelt before him. ‘Lord, help me!’ she said.
26He replied, ‘It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.’
27‘Yes it is, Lord,’ she said. ‘Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.’
28Then Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.’ And her daughter was healed at that moment.
Jesus feeds the four thousand
29Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. 30Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them. 31The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.
32Jesus called his disciples to him and said, ‘I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.’
33His disciples answered, ‘Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?’
34‘How many loaves do you have?’ Jesus asked.
‘Seven,’ they replied, ‘and a few small fish.’
35He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. 36Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. 37They all ate and were satisfied. Afterwards the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 38The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children. 39After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.

規則より大切なもの
1パリサイ人やユダヤ人の指導者たちが、イエスに会いに、エルサレムからやって来ました。 2彼らはイエスに、「どうしてあなたの弟子たちは、先祖の言い伝えを守らないのか。食事の前に手を洗わないのはどうしてか」と迫りました。
3そこで、イエスは言われました。「それならお聞きします。あなたがたも自分たちの言い伝えのために、神の戒めを破っています。それはどういうわけですか。 4たとえば、律法には、『あなたの父と母とを敬え。だれでも父や母をののしる者は死刑に処せられる』とあります。 5-6ところが、どうでしょう。あなたがたは、両親が困っていようと何だろうと、『このお金は神にささげました』と言いさえすれば、もう両親のためにそのお金を使わなくてもよいと教えています。つまり、人間の作った規則を盾にとって、両親を敬い、そのめんどうをみなさいという神の戒めを破っているのです。 7まさに偽善者です。イザヤが預言したとおりです。
8『彼らは口先ではわたしを敬うが、
心はわたしから遠く離れている。
9彼らがわたしを拝んでも、むだなことだ。
神のおきての代わりに、
人間の規則を教えているのだから。』（イザヤ29・13）」
10それからイエスは、群衆を呼び寄せて言われました。「いいですか、よく聞きなさい。 11禁じられている物を食べたからといって、それで汚れるわけではありません。人を汚すのは、口から出ることばであり、心の思いなのです。」
12その時、弟子たちが来て言いました。「先生があんなことをおっしゃったので、パリサイ人たちはかんかんに怒っています。」
13しかし、イエスは言われました。「わたしの父がお植えにならなかった木は、みな根こそぎ抜かれてしまいます。 14だから、あの人たちのことは放っておきなさい。彼らは盲目なのです。おまけに、ほかの盲人の手引きまでして、結局、二人とも溝に落ちてしまうでしょう。」
15すると、ペテロが尋ねました。「きよくないとされている物を食べても汚れない、と先生がおっしゃるのは、どうしてですか。」
16イエスは言われました。「そんなことがわからないのですか。 17口から入る物は何でも腹に入って、外へ出てしまいます。 18ところが、悪いことばは悪い心から出てくるので、人を汚すのです。 19つまり、悪い考え、殺人、姦淫、不品行、盗み、うそ、また悪口などは、心から出て、 20人を汚すのです。しかし、食事の前に手を洗うという規則を破ったからといって汚れるわけではありません。」
21イエスはその地方を去り、ツロとシドンに向かわれました。
数々の奇跡
22この地方に住んでいるカナン人の女がイエスのところに来て、必死に願いました。「主よ。ダビデ王の子よ！お願いです。どうか、私をあわれと思ってお助けください。娘が悪霊に取りつかれて、ひどく苦しんでいるのです。」
23しかし、イエスは堅く口を閉ざして、ひとこともお答えになりません。とうとう弟子たちが、「あの女に早く帰るように言ってください。うるさくてしかたがありません」と頼みました。
24それでイエスは、「わたしが遣わされたのは、外国人を助けるためではありません。ユダヤ人を助けるためです」と説明なさいました。
25それでも女は、イエスの前にひれ伏し、「主よ。どうかお助けください」と願い続けました。
26イエスは、「子どもたちのパンを取り上げて、犬に投げてやるのはよくないことです」と言われました。
27しかし、女はあきらめませんでした。「おっしゃるとおりです。でも、食卓の下にいる小犬でも、落ちたパンくずぐらいは食べさせてもらえます。」
28そのことばにイエスは感心し、「あなたの信仰は見上げたものです。いいでしょう。願いをかなえてあげましょう」と言われました。その時から、彼女の娘は治りました。
29さて、再びガリラヤ湖に移ります。イエスは丘に登り、腰をおろしておられました。 30そこへ、大ぜいの人が、足の不自由な者、盲人、体の不自由な者、口のきけない者をはじめ、たくさんの病人を連れて来たので、イエスはその人たちをいやされました。 31なんという驚くべき光景でしょう。口のきけなかった者が興奮して話しだし、歩けなかった者が歩きだし、盲人が見えるようになったのです。人々は驚き、心からイスラエルの神をほめたたえました。
32イエスは、弟子たちを呼び寄せて言われました。「この人たちがかわいそうです。もう三日もわたしといっしょにいて、食べ物はとっくになくなっています。このまま帰らせたら、きっと途中で倒れてしまうでしょう。」
33「でも、こんな寂しい所で、これほどたくさんの人です……。それだけの食べ物を、いったいどこで手に入れるのですか。」
34「今、手もとにどれぐらい食べ物がありますか」「パンが七つと、小さい魚がほんの少しだけです。」
35それを聞くと、イエスはみんなを地べたに座らせました。 36そして、七つのパンと魚を取り、神に感謝をささげてからそれを裂き、弟子たちに渡して、一人一人に配らせました。 37-38女性や子どもを除いても、四千人もの群衆でしたが、だれもが満腹するほど食べました。あとでパンくずを拾い集めると、なんと七つのかごがいっぱいになりました。
39そこで、イエスは人々を家に帰し、舟に乗ってマガダン地方へ向かわれました。
