Faith in the incarnate Son of God
1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
6This is the one who came by water and blood – Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7For there are three that testify: 8the5:7,8 Late manuscripts of the Vulgate testify in heaven: the Father, the Word and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one. 8 And there are three that testify on earth: the (not found in any Greek manuscript before the fourteenth century) Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. 9We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
Concluding affirmations
13I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15And if we know that he hears us – whatever we ask – we know that we have what we asked of him.
16If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that. 17All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.
18We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them. 19We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. 20We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
21Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.

神の証言を信じる
1イエスはキリストである、すなわち、神の子であり救い主であると信じるなら、その人は神の子どもです。父なる神を愛する人はみな、神の子どもたちを愛するはずです。 2そういうわけで、あなたがたがどれだけ神を愛し、従っているかで、神の子どもたちに対する愛がわかるのです。 3神を愛するとは、そのご命令を守ることです。決してむずかしいことではありません。
4神の子どもたちはみな、神に従います。そして、キリストに信頼することによって、この世の悪に打ち勝つことができるのです。 5イエスを神の子であると信じる人以外に、世との戦いに勝てる人はいません。
6-8私たちは、イエスが神の子であると知っています。なぜなら、イエスがバプテスマ（洗礼）を受けられた時、そして、イエスが十字架の死を目前にされた時、天からの神の声がそのことを証言したからです。さらに、永遠に真実である聖霊も、そう証言しておられます。ですから、私たちには三つの証言があるわけです。すなわち、イエスのバプテスマの時の天の声、イエスの死を目前にした時の天の声、聖霊の声です。この三つが一致して、イエス・キリストは神の子であると証言しているのです。
9私たちが法廷で証人のことばを信じるのなら、神の証言はなおさら信じられるはずです。神ご自身がはっきりと、イエスは神の子であるとあかししておられるのですから。 10このことを信じる人は、心でそう確信しています。信じない人は、神を偽り者と言っているのです。イエスについての神の証言を信じようとしないからです。 11神の言われたこととは、神が私たちに永遠のいのちを与えてくださったこと、そして、永遠のいのちが神の御子のうちにあるということです。 12そういうわけで、神の子を信じる人にはいのちがあり、信じない人にはいのちがないのです。
13すでに神の御子を信じているあなたがたにこのように書き送るのは、あなたがたが永遠のいのちを持っていることを、よく自覚してもらいたいからです。
14私たちは、神の御心にかなうことを願い求めるなら、いつでもその願いを聞いていただけると確信しています。 15私たちの願いに確かに神が耳を傾けてくださっているとわかれば、神は必ずその祈りに答えてくださると確信できるのです。
16もし、罪を犯している兄弟を見たら、神に願いなさい。それが取り返しのつかない罪でなければ、いのちを失うことはありません。しかし、死に至る罪があります。そのような罪にはまり込んでいる人に対しては、願っても無意味です。 17もちろん、すべての悪が罪であることに違いはありませんが、死に至る罪があるのです。
18神の家族の一員とされている人は、罪を犯す習慣はありません。神の御子にしっかりと支えられているので、悪魔は手出しできないのです。 19私たちは神の子どもですが、回りの世界は悪魔の支配下にあることを知っています。 20また、神の御子が来て、私たちに真の神を知る力を与えてくださったことも知っています。ですから私たちは、神の御子イエス・キリストによって、真実な方のうちにいるのです。この方こそ、真実の神であり、永遠のいのちです。
21愛する子どもたちよ。神に取って代わる心の中の偶像から、自分自身を守りなさい。
