1Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,
To those who through the righteousness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours:
2Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
Confirming one’s calling and election
3His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. 8For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9But whoever does not have them is short-sighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.
10Therefore, my brothers and sisters,1:10 The Greek word for brothers and sisters (adelphoi) refers here to believers, both men and women, as part of God’s family. make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, 11and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Prophecy of Scripture
12So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have. 13I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body, 14because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things.
16For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17He received honour and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’1:17 Matt. 17:5; Mark 9:7; Luke 9:35 18We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.
19We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. 21For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

2あなたがたは、神の恵みと平安をもっと多くいただきたいと願っているでしょう。それなら、イエス・キリストについてもっと深く学んでください。 3キリストを知れば知るほど、その偉大な力を通して、私たちが神に従う正しい生活を送るために必要なすべてのものをいただくことができるのです。そればかりかキリストは、ご自分の栄光と共に敬虔や品性をも、私たちに与えてくださるのです。 4さらに神は、それによって、すばらしい約束を与えてくださいます。この約束のゆえに、私たちは欲望のもたらす滅びから守られ、キリストのご性質を備えた者となれるのです。
5これらの贈り物をいただくために、あなたがたはあらゆる努力をして神を理解し、神が何を望んでおられるかを知らなければなりません。 6また、自制心を持ち、忍耐と敬虔を身につけなさい。 7さらに、兄弟愛を持って互いに愛し合い、神の愛に生きなさい。
8これらが備われば、あなたがたはますます強められ、主イエス・キリストのために多くの有益な働きができるのです。 9しかし、これらのものを追い求めない人は、実を結ばない人です。そういう人は、神が正しい生活を送るようにと、過去の罪から救ってくださったことをすっかり忘れているのでしょうか。 10ですから、愛する皆さん。ますます熱心に、自分がほんとうに神に招かれ、選ばれた者であることを確かなものとしてください。そうすれば、決してつまずくことなどありません。 11そして神はあなたがたを、主であり救い主であるイエス・キリストの永遠の国に迎え入れるために、門を広く開けてくださいます。
12もちろん、こんなことは、すでによくわかっていることでしょうが、それでもなお、私はあなたがたに、いつもこれらのことを思い起こしてもらいたいのです。 13-14私の生涯も残り少なくなったことを、主イエス・キリストから示されています。それで、この世にいる間に、これらの注意書きを送ろうと決心したのです。 15私が死んだあとにも、これらのことを忘れないように、あなたがたの心にはっきりと刻んでおきたいのです。
16主イエス・キリストの力と再臨（キリストが再び地上に来られること）について話してきましたが、それは、私たちがうまく考え出した作り話ではありません。私はこの目で、キリストの輝きと栄光をはっきり見たのです。 17-18キリストが聖なる山の上で、父なる神から誉れと栄光とを受けて輝かれた時、私はその場に居合わせました。その時、「これこそわたしの愛する子、わたしの大いなる喜び」と、栄光にあふれる厳かな声が天から響くのを、私ははっきり聞いたのです。
19こうして私は、預言のことばが現実となるのを目のあたりにしました。そのことばは、暗い部屋をすみずみまで照らし出す明かりのようで、難解なまま、暗闇の中に置かれている多くのことがらに光をあて、理解させてくれるものです。そして、あなたがたのたましいに夜明けの光が差し込み、明けの明星であるキリストが心を照らしてくださるのです。 20-21なぜなら、聖書にある預言のことばは、預言者がかってに考え出したものではないからです。それは、これら神を敬う人の心に住まれる聖霊がお授けになった、混じりけのない神からのことばなのです。
