Jesus Sends Out the Twelve
1When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, 2and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt. 4Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. 5If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” 6So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.
7Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John had been raised from the dead, 8others that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life. 9But Herod said, “I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?” And he tried to see him.
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
10When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida, 11but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing.
12Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.”
13He replied, “You give them something to eat.”
They answered, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.” 14(About five thousand men were there.)
But he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15The disciples did so, and everyone sat down. 16Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. 17They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah
18Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?”
19They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.”
20“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”
Jesus Predicts His Death
21Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone. 22And he said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.”
23Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. 25What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? 26Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
27“Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”
The Transfiguration
28About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. 29As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. 31They spoke about his departure,9:31 Greek exodos which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)
34While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” 36When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.
Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy
37The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. 40I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.”
41“You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”
42Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43And they were all amazed at the greatness of God.
Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time
While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, 44“Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
46An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. 47Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.”
49“Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”
50“Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”
Samaritan Opposition
51As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; 53but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them9:54 Some manuscripts them, just as Elijah did?” 55But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56Then he and his disciples went to another village.
The Cost of Following Jesus
57As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”
58Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
59He said to another man, “Follow me.”
But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
60Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
61Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”
62Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
Jesus sänder ut sina tolv lärjungar
(Matt 10:9-14; Mark 6:7-12)
1Jesus kallade samman de tolv och gav dem makt att driva ut alla slags onda andar och kraft att bota sjukdomar. 2Sedan sände han ut dem för att förkunna Guds rike och för att bota sjuka.
3Han sa till dem: ”Ta inte med er något på vägen, ingen vandringsstav eller väska, inte mat eller pengar, och ingen extra skjorta. 4När ni kommer in i ett hus, stanna då där tills ni vandrar vidare därifrån. 5Men om människorna i en stad inte vill ta emot er, så gå bara därifrån och skaka stadens damm av era fötter. Det ska vittna mot dem.”
6Så började de att vandra från plats till plats och spred evangeliet och botade sjuka.
Ryktet om Jesus gör Herodes orolig
(Matt 14:1-2; Mark 6:14-16)
7När tetrarken Herodes fick höra talas om allt detta som hände, blev han orolig och visste inte vad han skulle tro, för somliga sa att det var Johannes döparen som hade uppstått från de döda. 8Några sa att det var Elia9:8 Jfr 2 Kung 2:1-11. som visade sig, och andra att någon av de gamla profeterna hade uppstått.
9Herodes sa: ”Jag lät halshugga Johannes. Men vem är denne som jag hör sådant här om?” Och han försökte få träffa Jesus.
Jesus ger mat åt mer än 5 000 personer
(Matt 14:13-21; Mark 6:32-44; Joh 6:1-13)
10Apostlarna kom nu tillbaka och rapporterade till Jesus allt de hade gjort. Jesus drog sig undan med dem till en stad som hette Betsaida, 11men folket fick reda på det och följde efter. Och han tog emot folket och talade till dem om Guds rike och botade alla som behövde hjälp.
12När det började bli kväll kom de tolv till honom och sa: ”Skicka iväg folket, så att de kan gå till byarna och gårdarna här i närheten och köpa mat och ordna någonstans att sova. Här i denna ödemark finns det ju ingenting.”
13Men Jesus svarade: ”Ge dem mat, ni själva!”
De sa: ”Allt vi har är fem bröd och två fiskar, om vi nu inte ska gå och köpa mat så att det räcker till alla de här människorna.” 14Det var omkring 5 000 män9:14 Och ett okänt antal kvinnor och barn, se Matt 14:21. där. ”Be dem bara att slå sig ner i grupper på femtio personer”, sa han till lärjungarna. 15Då gjorde de som han sa och lät alla slå sig ner.
16Sedan tog Jesus de fem bröden och de två fiskarna och såg upp mot himlen och tackade Gud för dem. Efter det bröt han dem och gav åt sina lärjungar för att de skulle ge åt folket. 17Alla åt och blev mätta, och när man samlade ihop det som var över, blev det tolv korgar.
Petrus kallar Jesus för Messias
(Matt 16:13-16; Mark 8:27-29)
18En gång när Jesus hade dragit sig undan för att be, och hans lärjungar var med honom, frågade han dem: ”Vem säger folkmassorna att jag är?”
19”Somliga säger att du är Johannes döparen”, svarade de, ”och några att du är Elia9:19 Jfr 2 Kung 2:1-11.. Andra säger att någon av de gamla profeterna har uppstått från de döda.”
20Då frågade han dem: ”Vem säger ni att jag är?”
Petrus svarade: ”Guds Messias.”
Jesus förutsäger för första gången att han ska dö
(Matt 16:20-23; Mark 8:30-33)
21Jesus gav dem då stränga order att inte tala om detta för någon 22och sa: ”Människosonen måste lida mycket och bli förkastad av folkets ledare och översteprästerna och de skriftlärda, bli dödad och uppstå på den tredje9:22 Se not till Matt 12:40. dagen.”
Lärjungeskapets krav
(Matt 16:24-28; Mark 8:34—9:1)
23Sedan sa han till allt folket: ”Om någon vill följa mig, måste han förneka sig själv, varje dag ta sitt kors och följa mig. 24Den som vill rädda sitt liv ska mista det, men den som mister sitt liv för min skull, han ska rädda det. 25Vad vinner en människa om hela världen blir hennes, om hon samtidigt går evigt förlorad? 26Den som skäms för mig och för de ord jag talar, honom ska Människosonen skämmas för, när han återvänder i sin och sin Faders och de heliga änglarnas härlighet. 27Men jag säger er en sanning: några av er som står här kommer inte att dö förrän de har sett Guds rike.9:27 Detta syftar antagligen på det som Petrus, Jakob och Johannes fick vara med om i de följande verserna.”
Jesus förvandlas på berget
(Matt 17:1-13; Mark 9:2-13)
28Ungefär en vecka senare tog Jesus med sig Petrus, Jakob och Johannes och gick upp på ett berg för att be. 29Medan han bad förvandlades hans ansikte, och hans kläder blev bländande vita. 30Två män stod och talade med honom. Det var Mose och Elia,9:30 Se not till Matt 17:3. 31som visade sig i härlighet och talade om Jesus uttåg som han skulle fullborda i Jerusalem.
32Petrus och de båda andra hade somnat djupt, men nu vaknade de och fick se Jesus härlighet och de två männen som stod där med honom. 33När de skulle lämna Jesus, sa Petrus till Jesus: ”Mästare, det är gott att få vara här! Låt oss bygga tre hyddor, en åt dig och en åt Mose och en åt Elia.” Han visste inte vad han sa.
34Men under tiden han talade blev de insvepta i ett moln som sänkte sig ner över dem, och de blev förskräckta. 35Sedan hördes en röst från molnet som sa: ”Detta är min Son, min utvalde9:35 Min utvalde, jfr min älskade Son…min glädje, Matt 17:5.. Lyssna på honom!” 36Och när rösten hade tystnat fann de Jesus ensam kvar.
Men hans lärjungar höll tyst om vad de hade sett, och berättade det inte för någon förrän långt senare.
Jesus botar en pojke som är besatt av en ond ande
(Matt 17:14-19; Mark 9:14-29)
37Nästa dag, när de kom ner från berget, möttes de av mycket folk. 38Och en man i folkhopen ropade till Jesus: ”Mästare, hjälp min son, han är mitt enda barn. 39En ond ande brukar attackera honom, så att han skriker och vrider sig i kramper tills han får fradga runt munnen. När attacken äntligen är över, har anden nästan tagit död på honom. 40Jag bad dina lärjungar att driva ut den onda anden, men de kunde inte.”
41”Detta trolösa och förvridna släkte!” svarade Jesus. ”Hur länge måste jag vara hos er och stå ut med er? Ta hit din son.” 42Och medan pojken var på väg, kastade den onda anden omkull honom och slet och ryckte våldsamt i honom. Men Jesus talade strängt till den orena anden att lämna pojken, och han botade honom och överlämnade honom till hans far.
43Alla blev förundrade över Guds storhet.
Jesus förutsäger för andra gången att han ska dö
(Matt 17:22-23; Mark 9:30-32)
Medan folket fortfarande stod där helt häpna över allt han gjorde, sa Jesus till sina lärjungar:
44”Lyssna noga på vad jag nu säger: Människosonen ska bli förrådd och överlämnad till människorna.” 45Men de förstod inte vad han talade om. Det var fördolt för dem, så att de inte förmådde att fatta det, och de vågade inte fråga vad han menade.
Jesus förklarar vem som är störst
(Matt 18:1-5; Mark 9:33-37)
46Lärjungarna började nu diskutera med varandra om vem av dem som var störst. 47Men Jesus förstod vad som rörde sig i deras hjärtan. Därför tog han ett barn och ställde det bredvid sig 48och sa till dem: ”Den som tar emot det här barnet i mitt namn, han tar emot mig. Och den som tar emot mig, han tar emot den som har sänt mig. Den som är minst bland er, han är störst.”
Lärjungarna förbjuder en man att göra under i Jesus namn
(Mark 9:38-40)
49Johannes sa: ”Mästare, vi såg en man som drev ut onda andar i ditt namn, men eftersom han inte var en av oss försökte vi stoppa honom.”
50Då sa Jesus till honom: ”Låt honom hålla på, för den som inte är emot er, han är för er.”
Motstånd i Samarien
51Den tid hade nu kommit då Jesus skulle stiga upp till himlen, och han beslöt därför att börja gå mot Jerusalem.
52Han skickade budbärare i förväg, och de gick in i en samarisk9:52 Samarien låg mellan Galileen och Judeen. Invånarna var judar som uppblandats med andra folk. Det rådde fiendskap mellan dem och judarna. by för att förbereda för hans ankomst. 53Men eftersom Jesus var på väg mot Jerusalem ville man inte ha med honom att göra.
54När lärjungarna Jakob och Johannes såg det, sa de: ”Herre, ska vi befalla att eld kommer ner från himlen och bränner upp dem?”9:54 En del handskrifter tillägger: så som Elia gjorde. Jfr 2 Kung 1:10,12. 55Men Jesus vände sig om och tillrättavisade dem.9:55 En del handskrifter tillägger: Ni vet inte vilken slags ande ni är inspirerade av. 56 Människosonen har inte kommit för att förstöra människoliv, utan för att rädda dem. 56Sedan gick de vidare till en annan by.
Priset för att följa Jesus
(Matt 8:19-22)
57Medan de vandrade på vägen sa en man till Jesus: ”Jag vill följa dig vart du än går.”
58Jesus svarade: ”Rävarna har lyor och fåglarna har bon, men Människosonen har ingen plats där han kan vila ut.”
59Till en annan sa han: ”Kom och följ mig!” Men mannen svarade: ”Låt mig först gå hem och begrava min far.”9:59 Mannens far var antagligen död och begraven, men seden var att efter ungefär ett år begrava benen på ett speciellt ställe i gravväggen. Om det var denna senare begravning han väntade på, bad han om en tid upp till ett år.
60Då sa Jesus: ”Låt de döda begrava sina döda. Gå du och förkunna Guds rike.”
61En annan man sa: ”Jag ska följa dig, Herre, men låt mig först ta farväl av dem därhemma.”
62Då sa Jesus: ”Den som ser sig om efter att ha satt sin hand till plogen, han passar inte för Guds rike.”
