Isaiah’s Commission
1In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3And they were calling to one another:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”
4At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.
5“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”
6Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”
8Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
9He said, “Go and tell this people:
“ ‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding;
be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’
10Make the heart of this people calloused;
make their ears dull
and close their eyes.6:9,10 Hebrew; Septuagint ‘You will be ever hearing, but never understanding; / you will be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’ / 10 This people’s heart has become calloused; / they hardly hear with their ears, / and they have closed their eyes
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts,
and turn and be healed.”
11Then I said, “For how long, Lord?”
And he answered:
“Until the cities lie ruined
and without inhabitant,
until the houses are left deserted
and the fields ruined and ravaged,
12until the Lord has sent everyone far away
and the land is utterly forsaken.
13And though a tenth remains in the land,
it will again be laid waste.
But as the terebinth and oak
leave stumps when they are cut down,
so the holy seed will be the stump in the land.”
O Chamado de Isaías
1No ano em que o rei Uzias morreu, eu vi o Senhor assentado num trono alto e exaltado, e a aba de sua veste enchia o templo. 2Acima dele estavam serafins; cada um deles tinha seis asas: com duas cobriam o rosto, com duas cobriam os pés e com duas voavam. 3E proclamavam uns aos outros:
“Santo, santo, santo é o Senhor dos Exércitos,
a terra inteira está cheia da sua glória”.
4Ao som das suas vozes os batentes das portas tremeram, e o templo ficou cheio de fumaça.
5Então gritei: Ai de mim! Estou perdido! Pois sou um homem de lábios impuros e vivo no meio de um povo de lábios impuros; os meus olhos viram o Rei, o Senhor dos Exércitos!
6Logo um dos serafins voou até mim trazendo uma brasa viva, que havia tirado do altar com uma tenaz. 7Com ela tocou a minha boca e disse: “Veja, isto tocou os seus lábios; por isso, a sua culpa será removida, e o seu pecado será perdoado”.
8Então ouvi a voz do Senhor, conclamando: “Quem enviarei? Quem irá por nós?”
E eu respondi: Eis-me aqui. Envia-me!
9Ele disse: “Vá e diga a este povo:
“Estejam sempre ouvindo,
mas nunca entendam;
estejam sempre vendo,
e jamais percebam.
10Torne insensível o coração deste povo;
torne surdos os seus ouvidos
e feche os seus olhos.6.9,10 A Septuaginta diz Ainda que estejam sempre ouvindo, vocês nunca entenderão; ainda que estejam sempre vendo, vocês jamais perceberão. 10 O coração desse povo se tornou insensível; de má vontade ouviram com os seus ouvidos, e fecharam os seus olhos.
Que eles não vejam com os olhos,
não ouçam com os ouvidos
e não entendam com o coração,
para que não se convertam e sejam curados”.
11Então eu perguntei:
Até quando, Senhor?
E ele respondeu:
“Até que as cidades estejam em ruínas
e sem habitantes,
até que as casas fiquem abandonadas
e os campos estejam
totalmente devastados,
12até que o Senhor tenha enviado todos para longe
e a terra esteja totalmente desolada.
13E ainda que um décimo fique no país,
esses também serão destruídos.
Mas, assim como o terebinto e o carvalho
deixam o tronco quando são derrubados,
assim a santa semente será o seu tronco”.
