Woe to the Leaders of Ephraim and Judah
1Woe to that wreath, the pride of Ephraim’s drunkards,
to the fading flower, his glorious beauty,
set on the head of a fertile valley—
to that city, the pride of those laid low by wine!
2See, the Lord has one who is powerful and strong.
Like a hailstorm and a destructive wind,
like a driving rain and a flooding downpour,
he will throw it forcefully to the ground.
3That wreath, the pride of Ephraim’s drunkards,
will be trampled underfoot.
4That fading flower, his glorious beauty,
set on the head of a fertile valley,
will be like figs ripe before harvest—
as soon as people see them and take them in hand,
they swallow them.
5In that day the Lord Almighty
will be a glorious crown,
a beautiful wreath
for the remnant of his people.
6He will be a spirit of justice
to the one who sits in judgment,
a source of strength
to those who turn back the battle at the gate.
7And these also stagger from wine
and reel from beer:
Priests and prophets stagger from beer
and are befuddled with wine;
they reel from beer,
they stagger when seeing visions,
they stumble when rendering decisions.
8All the tables are covered with vomit
and there is not a spot without filth.
9“Who is it he is trying to teach?
To whom is he explaining his message?
To children weaned from their milk,
to those just taken from the breast?
10For it is:
Do this, do that,
a rule for this, a rule for that28:10 Hebrew / sav lasav sav lasav / kav lakav kav lakav (probably meaningless sounds mimicking the prophet’s words); also in verse 13;
a little here, a little there.”
11Very well then, with foreign lips and strange tongues
God will speak to this people,
12to whom he said,
“This is the resting place, let the weary rest”;
and, “This is the place of repose”—
but they would not listen.
13So then, the word of the Lord to them will become:
Do this, do that,
a rule for this, a rule for that;
a little here, a little there—
so that as they go they will fall backward;
they will be injured and snared and captured.
14Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you scoffers
who rule this people in Jerusalem.
15You boast, “We have entered into a covenant with death,
with the realm of the dead we have made an agreement.
When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by,
it cannot touch us,
for we have made a lie our refuge
and falsehood28:15 Or false gods our hiding place.”
16So this is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone,
a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation;
the one who relies on it
will never be stricken with panic.
17I will make justice the measuring line
and righteousness the plumb line;
hail will sweep away your refuge, the lie,
and water will overflow your hiding place.
18Your covenant with death will be annulled;
your agreement with the realm of the dead will not stand.
When the overwhelming scourge sweeps by,
you will be beaten down by it.
19As often as it comes it will carry you away;
morning after morning, by day and by night,
it will sweep through.”
The understanding of this message
will bring sheer terror.
20The bed is too short to stretch out on,
the blanket too narrow to wrap around you.
21The Lord will rise up as he did at Mount Perazim,
he will rouse himself as in the Valley of Gibeon—
to do his work, his strange work,
and perform his task, his alien task.
22Now stop your mocking,
or your chains will become heavier;
the Lord, the Lord Almighty, has told me
of the destruction decreed against the whole land.
23Listen and hear my voice;
pay attention and hear what I say.
24When a farmer plows for planting, does he plow continually?
Does he keep on breaking up and working the soil?
25When he has leveled the surface,
does he not sow caraway and scatter cumin?
Does he not plant wheat in its place,28:25 The meaning of the Hebrew for this word is uncertain.

and spelt in its field?
26His God instructs him
and teaches him the right way.
27Caraway is not threshed with a sledge,
nor is the wheel of a cart rolled over cumin;
caraway is beaten out with a rod,
and cumin with a stick.
28Grain must be ground to make bread;
so one does not go on threshing it forever.
The wheels of a threshing cart may be rolled over it,
but one does not use horses to grind grain.
29All this also comes from the Lord Almighty,
whose plan is wonderful,
whose wisdom is magnificent.
اخطار به اسرائيل
1وای بر سامره! وای بر اين شهری كه با دره‌های حاصلخيز احاطه شده و مايه افتخار ميگساران اسرائيل است! شراب، رهبران اسرائيل را از پای درآورده است. جلال اسرائيل كه همانند تاج گلی بر سر رهبرانش بود، در حال پژمردن است. 2خداوند كسی را دارد كه زورآور و توانا است. خداوند او را مانند تگرگ شديد و طوفان مهلک و سيلاب خروشان بر سرزمين اسرائيل می‌فرستد تا آن را فرا بگيرد. 3آنگاه شهری كه مايهٔ افتخار ميگساران اسرائيل است زير پاها پايمال خواهد شد. 4شكوه و زيبايی دره‌های حاصلخيز آن ناگهان از بين خواهد رفت درست مانند نوبر انجير كه به محض ديده شدن بر سر شاخه‌ها، چيده و خورده می‌شود.
5روزی خواهد آمد كه خداوند قادر متعال، خود برای بازماندگان قومش تاج جلال و زيبايی خواهد بود. 6او به قضات توانايی تشخيص خواهد بخشيد و به سربازان قدرت خواهد داد تا از دروازه‌های شهر دفاع كنند.
7اما اينک اشخاص مست اورشليم را اداره می‌كنند! حتی كاهنان و انبيا نيز مستند؛ شراب ايشان را چنان مست و گيج كرده كه قادر نيستند پيامهای خدا را دريابند و آنها را به مردم رسانده، آنان را ارشاد كنند. 8سفره‌هايشان پر از استفراغ و كثافت است و هيچ جای پاكيزه‌ای ديده نمی‌شود.
9آنها می‌گويند: «اشعيا به چه كسی تعليم می‌دهد؟ چه كسی به تعليم او احتياج دارد؟ تعليم او فقط برای بچه‌ها خوب است! 10او هر مطلبی را بارها برای ما تكرار می‌كند و كلمه به كلمه توضيح می‌دهد.»
11چون مردم به اين تعليم گوش نمی‌دهند، خدا قوم بيگانه‌ای را خواهد فرستاد تا به زبان بيگانه به آنها درس عبرت بدهند! 12خدا می‌خواست به ايشان آرامش و امنيت ببخشد، اما ايشان نخواستند از او اطاعت كنند. 13پس خداوند هر مطلبی را بارها برای ايشان تكرار خواهد كرد و كلمه به كلمه توضيح خواهد داد. اين قوم افتاده، خرد خواهند شد و در دام خواهند افتاد و سرانجام اسير خواهند شد.
14پس ای حكمرانان اورشليم كه همه چيز را به باد مسخره می‌گيريد، به آنچه خداوند می‌فرمايد توجه كنيد. 15شما می‌گوييد كه با مرگ معامله كرده‌ايد و با دنيای مردگان قرارداد بسته‌ايد. اطمينان داريد كه هرگاه مصيبتی رخ دهد هيچ گزندی به شما نخواهد رسيد؛ اما بدانيد كه اين اطمينان باطل است و شما خود را فريب می‌دهيد. 16اينک خداوند چنين می‌فرمايد: «من يک سنگ زير بنا در صهيون می‌گذارم يک سنگ گرانبها، يک سنگ آزموده شده، يک اساس محكم؛ هر كه بر آن اطمينان كند مضطرب نخواهد شد. 17انصاف، ريسمان آن و عدالت، شاقول آن خواهد بود.»
بارش تگرگ پناهگاه شما را كه بر دروغ استوار است ويران خواهد كرد و سيل مخفيگاه شما را خواهد برد. 18قراردادی كه با مرگ و دنيای مردگان بسته‌ايد باطل خواهد شد، بنابراين وقتی مصيبت بيايد شما را از پای درمی‌آورد. 19مصيبت روز و شب به سراغتان خواهد آمد و شما را گرفتار خواهد كرد. هر بار كه پيامی از خدا بشنويد وحشت سراپايتان را فرا خواهد گرفت. 20شما مانند كسی خواهيد بود كه می‌خواهد بخوابد اما بسترش كوتاهتر از آنست كه بر آن دراز بكشد و لحافش تنگ‌تر از آنكه او را بپوشاند. 21خداوند با خشم و غضب خواهد آمد تا كارهای شگفت‌انگيز خود را به انجام رساند همانگونه كه در كوه فراصيم و درهٔ جبعون اين كار را كرد. 22پس، از تمسخر دست برداريد مبادا مجازات شما سنگينتر شود، زيرا خداوند، خدای قادر متعال به من گفته كه قصد دارد تمام زمين را نابود كند.
حكمت خداوند
23به من گوش كنيد! به سخنان من توجه كنيد! 24يک كشاورز تمام وقت خود را صرف شخم زدن زمين نمی‌كند. 25او می‌داند كی بايد آن را آماده كند تا در آن تخم بكارد. می‌داند تخم گشنيز و زيره را كجا بپاشد و بذر گندم و جو و ذرت را كجا بكارد. 26او می‌داند چه كند زيرا خدايش به او ياد داده است. 27او هرگز برای كوبيدن گشنيز و زيره از خرمنكوب استفاده نمی‌كند، بلكه با چوب آنها را می‌كوبد. 28برای تهيهٔ آرد، او می‌داند چه مدت بايد گندم را خرمنكوبی كند و چگونه چرخ عرابهٔ خود را بر آن بگرداند بدون اينكه اسبان عرابه، گندم را له كنند. 29تمام اين دانش از خداوند قادر متعال كه رأی و حكمتش عجيب و عظيم است صادر می‌گردد.
