Tablets Like the First Ones
1At that time the Lord said to me, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones and come up to me on the mountain. Also make a wooden ark.10:1 That is, a chest 2I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. Then you are to put them in the ark.”
3So I made the ark out of acacia wood and chiseled out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I went up on the mountain with the two tablets in my hands. 4The Lord wrote on these tablets what he had written before, the Ten Commandments he had proclaimed to you on the mountain, out of the fire, on the day of the assembly. And the Lord gave them to me. 5Then I came back down the mountain and put the tablets in the ark I had made, as the Lord commanded me, and they are there now.
6(The Israelites traveled from the wells of Bene Jaakan to Moserah. There Aaron died and was buried, and Eleazar his son succeeded him as priest. 7From there they traveled to Gudgodah and on to Jotbathah, a land with streams of water. 8At that time the Lord set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the Lord, to stand before the Lord to minister and to pronounce blessings in his name, as they still do today. 9That is why the Levites have no share or inheritance among their fellow Israelites; the Lord is their inheritance, as the Lord your God told them.)
10Now I had stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights, as I did the first time, and the Lord listened to me at this time also. It was not his will to destroy you. 11“Go,” the Lord said to me, “and lead the people on their way, so that they may enter and possess the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.”
Fear the Lord
12And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?
14To the Lord your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it. 15Yet the Lord set his affection on your ancestors and loved them, and he chose you, their descendants, above all the nations—as it is today. 16Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and do not be stiff-necked any longer. 17For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes. 18He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing. 19And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt. 20Fear the Lord your God and serve him. Hold fast to him and take your oaths in his name. 21He is the one you praise; he is your God, who performed for you those great and awesome wonders you saw with your own eyes. 22Your ancestors who went down into Egypt were seventy in all, and now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky.
Två nya stentavlor
(2 Mos 34:1-9)
1Då sa Herren till mig att hugga ut två nya stentavlor likadana som de förra och att sedan vända tillbaka till honom på berget. Jag skulle också tillverka en ark av trä. 2På de nya tavlorna skulle han skriva ner samma budord som på de tavlor jag slagit sönder och sedan skulle jag lägga dem i arken. 3Jag gjorde därför en ark av akacieträ och högg ut två stentavlor likadana som de förra och tog med mig tavlorna upp på berget. 4Herren skrev på nytt ner de tio budorden på tavlorna, samma budord som han gett er inifrån elden då ni samlades vid berget. Han överlämnade sedan tavlorna till mig 5och jag kom ner från berget igen och lade dem i arken som jag hade gjort, alldeles som Herren har befallt och där finns de nu.
6Israels folk vandrade sedan från Beerot Bene-Jaakan till Mosera. Där dog Aron och begravdes. Hans son Elasar blev präst efter honom.
7Sedan drog de vidare till Gudgoda och därifrån till Jotvata, ett område med många bäckar. 8Det var vid den tiden Herren avskilde Levi stam att bära Herrens förbundsark och att stå framför Herren och tjäna honom och uttala välsignelser i hans namn, precis som de gör än idag. 9Det är därför som Levi stam inte har fått någon egendom eller eget markområde som de andra stammarna. Herren, din Gud, är deras egendom, precis som han har lovat dem.
10Jag stannade alltså på berget inför Herren i fyrtio dagar och fyrtio nätter på samma sätt som jag hade gjort första gången och Herren lyssnade på nytt till min vädjan, för han ville inte att ni skulle förintas. 11Herren sa till mig: ”Gå! Led folket till det land som jag med ed har lovat deras förfäder så att de kan ta det i besittning!”
Glöm inte att lyda Gud
12Och nu Israel, vad kräver Herren, din Gud, av dig mer än att du fruktar Herren, din Gud, så att du alltid vandrar hans vägar att du älskar och tjänar honom av hela ditt hjärta och av hela din själ 13och att du följer alla de lagar och föreskrifter som jag ger dig idag, allt för ditt eget bästa? 14Både himlen och jorden och allt som finns på den tillhör Herren, din Gud. 15Ändå var det just dina förfäder han fäste sig vid i kärlek. Han utvalde er, deras barn, före alla andra folk och detta gäller än idag. 16Skär därför bort era hjärtans förhud10:16 Att älska Gud och att lyda honom var det viktigaste. Det räckte inte med den yttre omskärelsen (se not till 1 Mos 17:10). Denna gällde dessutom bara männen. och var inte så motspänstiga!
17Herren, er Gud, är gudarnas Gud och herrarnas Herre. Han är den store och mäktige Guden, den fruktansvärde Guden, som inte har anseende till person och inte tar mutor. 18Han ger rätt åt den faderlöse och änkan. Han älskar främlingen och ger honom mat och kläder. 19Därför ska också ni älska främlingar, ni har ju själva varit främlingar i Egypten. 20Du ska frukta Herren, din Gud, tjäna honom, hålla fast vid honom och svära vid hans namn. 21Han är din stolthet och han är din Gud, han som har gjort så stora och underbara ting inför dina ögon. 22När dina förfäder vandrade ner till Egypten var de bara sjuttio personer, men nu har Herren, din Gud, gjort er lika talrika som stjärnorna på himlen.
