1The fifth angel blew his trumpet. Then I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the tunnel leading down into a bottomless pit. The pit was called the Abyss. 2The star opened the Abyss. Then smoke rose up from it like the smoke from a huge furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss. 3Out of the smoke came locusts. They came down on the earth. They were given power like the power of scorpions of the earth. 4They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree. They were supposed to harm only the people without God’s official seal on their foreheads. 5The locusts were not allowed to kill these people. But the locusts could hurt them over and over for five months. The pain the people suffered was like the sting of a scorpion when it strikes. 6In those days, people will look for a way to die but won’t find it. They will want to die, but death will escape them.
7The locusts looked like horses ready for battle. On their heads they wore something like crowns of gold. Their faces looked like human faces. 8Their hair was like women’s hair. Their teeth were like lions’ teeth. 9Their chests were covered with something that looked like armor made out of iron. The sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle. 10They had tails that could sting people like scorpions do. And in their tails they had power to hurt people over and over for five months. 11Their king was the angel of the Abyss. In the Hebrew language his name is Abaddon. In Greek it is Apollyon. His name means Destroyer.
12The first terrible judgment is past. Two others are still coming.
13The sixth angel blew his trumpet. Then I heard a voice coming from the four corners of the golden altar. The altar stands in front of God. 14The voice spoke to the sixth angel who had the trumpet. The voice said, “Set the four angels free who are held at the great river Euphrates.” 15The four angels had been ready for this very hour and day and month and year. They were set free to kill a third of all people. 16The number of troops on horseback was 200,000,000. I heard how many there were.
17The horses and riders I saw in my vision had armor on their chests. It was red like fire, dark blue, and yellow like sulfur. The heads of the horses looked like lions’ heads. Out of their mouths came fire, smoke and sulfur. 18A third of all people were killed by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur that came out of the horses’ mouths. 19The power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails. The tails were like snakes whose heads could bite.
20There were people who were not killed by these plagues. But they still didn’t turn away from what they had been doing. They did not stop worshiping demons. They kept worshiping statues of gods made out of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood. These statues can’t see or hear or walk. 21The people also did not turn away from their murders, witchcraft, sexual sins and stealing.

În traducerea LXX însă, termenul grecesc abyssos traduce ebraicul tehom (adânc, vezi Gen. 1:2; 7:11) [peste tot în carte].. 2A deschis fântâna spre Adânc, și din fântână a ieșit fum, ca fumul dintr‑un cuptor mare. Soarele și văzduhul s‑au întunecat din cauza fumului din fântână. 3Din fum au ieșit pe pământ lăcuste, cărora le‑a fost dată o putere ca puterea pe care o au scorpionii pământului. 4Li s‑a spus să nu facă rău nici ierbii de pe pământ, nici vreunei plante verzi și nici vreunui copac, ci doar oamenilor care nu au pe frunțile lor sigiliul lui Dumnezeu. 5Nu li s‑a dat voie să‑i omoare, ci doar să‑i chinuiască timp de cinci luni5 Probabil durata de viață a acestor lăcuste sau cea a sezonului secetos.. Chinul pe care‑l provocau era precum chinul provocat de un scorpion când înțeapă un om. 6În zilele acelea oamenii vor căuta moartea, dar nu o vor găsi; vor tânji să moară, dar moartea va fugi de ei.
7Înfățișarea lăcustelor era asemenea unor cai pregătiți pentru război, iar pe capete aveau ceva ca niște coroane care păreau de aur. Fețele lor erau ca niște fețe de oameni; 8aveau părul ca părul de femeie și dinții ca de leu, 9aveau platoșe ca niște platoșe de fier, iar zgomotul făcut de aripile lor era ca zgomotul multor carete trase de cai care aleargă în război. 10Aveau cozi, ca scorpionii, și ace; și în cozile lor le stătea puterea de a face rău oamenilor timp de cinci luni. 11Aveau peste ele ca împărat pe îngerul Adâncului. În ebraică, numele lui este „Abaddon“, iar în greacă are numele de „Apollyon“11 Atât Abaddon, cât și Apollyon înseamnă Distrugătorul..
12Primul „vai“ s‑a dus. Iată că mai vin încă două „vaiuri“.
13Al șaselea înger a sunat din trâmbiță. Și am auzit un glas din cele patru coarne ale altarului de aur care este înaintea lui Dumnezeu, 14zicând celui de‑al șaselea înger care avea trâmbița: „Dezleagă‑i pe cei patru îngeri care sunt legați la Râul cel Mare, Eufrat14 În istoria Israelului, fluviul Eufrat a marcat granița dintre acesta și marii săi dușmani, Asiria și Babilon. Vezi Is. 8:5-8.!“ 15Cei patru îngeri, care fuseseră pregătiți chiar pentru ora, ziua, luna și anul acela, au fost dezlegați, ca să omoare a treia parte din oameni. 16Numărul soldaților cavaleriei era de douăzeci de mii de ori zece mii16 Vezi nota de la 5:11.; am auzit numărul lor.
17Iată cum am văzut în viziune caii și pe cei care‑i călăreau: aveau platoșe de un roșu aprins, albastru vinețiu și galben ca sulful. Capetele cailor erau ca și capetele de lei, iar din gurile lor ieșeau foc, fum și sulf. 18A treia parte din oameni a fost omorâtă prin aceste trei urgii, și anume prin focul, fumul și sulful care ieșeau din gurile cailor. 19Puterea cailor era în gurile și în cozile lor, căci cozile lor erau asemenea șerpilor, având capete cu care făceau rău.
20Oamenii care au mai rămas, și anume cei care nu au fost omorâți de aceste urgii, nu s‑au pocăit de lucrările mâinilor lor, acelea de a nu se mai închina demonilor și idolilor de aur, argint, bronz, piatră și lemn, care nu pot nici să vadă, nici să audă, nici să umble. 21Și nu s‑au pocăit nici de crimele lor, nici de vrăjitoriile lor, nici de curvia lor și nici de furturile lor.
