Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath Day
1One Sabbath day Jesus was walking through the grainfields. His disciples began to break off some heads of grain. They rubbed them in their hands and ate them. 2Some of the Pharisees said, “It is against the Law to do this on the Sabbath day. Why are you doing it?”
3Jesus answered them, “Haven’t you ever read about what David did? He and his men were hungry. 4He entered the house of God and took the holy bread. He ate the bread that only priests were allowed to eat. David also gave some to his men.” 5Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath day.”
6On another Sabbath day, Jesus went into the synagogue and was teaching. A man whose right hand was weak and twisted was there. 7The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were trying to find fault with Jesus. So they watched him closely. They wanted to see if he would heal on the Sabbath day. 8But Jesus knew what they were thinking. He spoke to the man who had the weak and twisted hand. “Get up and stand in front of everyone,” he said. So the man got up and stood there.
9Then Jesus said to them, “What does the Law say we should do on the Sabbath day? Should we do good? Or should we do evil? Should we save life? Or should we destroy it?”
10He looked around at all of them. Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did, and his hand had been made as good as new. 11But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were very angry. They began to talk to one another about what they might do to Jesus.
Jesus Chooses the Twelve Apostles
12On one of those days, Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray. He spent the night praying to God. 13When morning came, he called for his disciples to come to him. He chose 12 of them and made them apostles. Here are their names.

James, son of Alphaeus
Simon who was called the Zealot
16Judas, son of James
and Judas Iscariot who would later hand Jesus over to his enemies
Jesus Gives Blessings and Warnings
17Jesus went down the mountain with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there. A large number of other people were there too. They came from all over Judea, including Jerusalem. They also came from the coastland around Tyre and Sidon. 18They had all come to hear Jesus and to be healed of their sicknesses. People who were troubled by evil spirits were made well. 19Everyone tried to touch Jesus. Power was coming from him and healing them all.
20Jesus looked at his disciples. He said to them,
“Blessed are you who are needy.
God’s kingdom belongs to you.
21Blessed are you who are hungry now.
You will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who are sad now.
You will laugh.
22Blessed are you when people hate you,
when they have nothing to do with you
and say bad things about you,
and when they treat your name as something evil.
They do all this because you are followers of the Son of Man.
23“The prophets of long ago were treated the same way. When these things happen to you, be glad and jump for joy. You will receive many blessings in heaven.
24“But how terrible it will be for you who are rich!
You have already had your easy life.
25How terrible for you who are well fed now!
You will go hungry.
How terrible for you who laugh now!
You will cry and be sad.
26How terrible for you when everyone says good things about you!
Their people treated the false prophets the same way long ago.
Love Your Enemies
27“But here is what I tell you who are listening. Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. 28Bless those who call down curses on you. And pray for those who treat you badly. 29Suppose someone slaps you on one cheek. Let them slap you on the other cheek as well. Suppose someone takes your coat. Don’t stop them from taking your shirt as well. 30Give to everyone who asks you. And if anyone takes what belongs to you, don’t ask to get it back. 31Do to others as you want them to do to you.
32“Suppose you love those who love you. Should anyone praise you for that? Even sinners love those who love them. 33And suppose you do good to those who are good to you. Should anyone praise you for that? Even sinners do that. 34And suppose you lend money to those who can pay you back. Should anyone praise you for that? Even a sinner lends to sinners, expecting them to pay everything back. 35But love your enemies. Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then you will receive a lot in return. And you will be children of the Most High God. He is kind to people who are evil and are not thankful. 36So have mercy, just as your Father has mercy.
Be Fair When You Judge Other People
37“If you do not judge other people, then you will not be judged. If you do not find others guilty, then you will not be found guilty. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38Give, and it will be given to you. A good amount will be poured into your lap. It will be pressed down, shaken together, and running over. The same amount you give will be measured out to you.”
39Jesus also gave them another example. He asked, “Can a blind person lead another blind person? Won’t they both fall into a pit? 40The student is not better than the teacher. But everyone who is completely trained will be like their teacher.
41“You look at the bit of sawdust in your friend’s eye. But you pay no attention to the piece of wood in your own eye. 42How can you say to your friend, ‘Let me take the bit of sawdust out of your eye’? How can you say this while there is a piece of wood in your own eye? You pretender! First take the piece of wood out of your own eye. Then you will be able to see clearly to take the bit of sawdust out of your friend’s eye.
A Tree and Its Fruit
43“A good tree doesn’t bear bad fruit. And a bad tree doesn’t bear good fruit. 44You can tell each tree by the kind of fruit it bears. People do not pick figs from thorns. And they don’t pick grapes from bushes. 45A good man says good things. These come from the good that is stored up in his heart. An evil man says evil things. These come from the evil that is stored up in his heart. A person’s mouth says everything that is in their heart.
The Wise and Foolish Builders
46“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and still don’t do what I say? 47Some people come and listen to me and do what I say. I will show you what they are like. 48They are like a man who builds a house. He digs down deep and sets it on solid rock. When a flood comes, the river rushes against the house. But the water can’t shake it. The house is well built. 49But here is what happens when people listen to my words and do not obey them. They are like a man who builds a house on soft ground instead of solid rock. The moment the river rushes against that house, it falls down. It is completely destroyed.”
Rasprava o suboti
(Mt 12:1-8; Mk 2:23-28)
1Neke su subote, dok je Isus prolazio poljem usjeva, učenici počeli trgati klasje, trti ga rukama i jesti. 2A neki farizeji rekoše: “Zašto činite ono što je subotom zabranjeno? Zakonom je zabranjeno skupljati usjev subotom!”
3Isus im odgovori: “Niste li u Pismu čitali o tomu što je učinio kralj David kad su on i njegovi pratitelji ogladnjeli? 4Ušao je u Dom Božji6:4 U Hram. i jeo prineseni kruh6:4 Vidjeti 1 Samuelova 21:1-7. koji je dopušteno jesti samo svećenicima te ga je dao jesti i svojim pratiocima. 5Ja, Sin Čovječji, gospodar sam subote.”
Isus iscjeljuje u subotu
(Mt 12:9-14; Mk 3:1-6)
6Druge subote Isus uđe u sinagogu i počne poučavati. Ondje je bio neki čovjek usahnule desne ruke. 7Pismoznanci i farizeji budno su pazili hoće li Isus u subotu iscijeliti, da ga mogu optužiti. 8Ali Isus je znao za njihovu nakanu pa reče čovjeku usahnule ruke: “Ustani i dođi ovamo na sredinu!” Čovjek ustane i stane ispred svih.
9Tada Isus reče farizejima i pismoznancima: “Pitam vas: Je li subotom dopušteno činiti dobro ili zlo, život spasiti ili uništiti?” 10Pogleda ih sve uokolo pa reče čovjeku: “Ispruži ruku!” On ju ispruži, a ruka mu postane zdrava. 11Isusovi se neprijatelji nato silno razgnjeve te se počnu dogovarati što da poduzmu protiv njega.
Isus izabire dvanaestoricu apostola
(Mt 10:2-4; Mk 3:13-19; Djela 1:13)
12Nedugo zatim Isus ode u goru moliti se. Cijelu se noć molio Bogu. 13Kad se razdanilo, dozove učenike te od njih izabere dvanaestoricu i imenuje ih apostolima:
14Šimuna (kojega je prozvao Petrom),
Andriju (Šimunova brata),
Jakova,
Ivana,
Filipa,
Bartolomeja,
15Mateja,
Tomu,
Jakova (Alfejeva sina),
Šimuna (zvanoga Revnitelj),
16Judu (Jakovljeva sina)
i Judu Iškariotskoga, koji ga je poslije izdao.
Mnoštvo slijedi Isusa
17Isus s njima siđe s gore i zaustavi se na nekoj visoravni. Mnoštvo njegovih učenika te silno mnoštvo naroda iz cijele Judeje, Jeruzalema te iz tirskog i sidonskog primorja 18nagrnulo je da ga sluša i izliječi se od bolesti. Ozdravljali su i ljudi koje su mučili nečisti duhovi. 19Svi su ga pokušavali dotaknuti jer je iz njega izlazila sila koja je sve iscjeljivala.
Blaženstva
(Mt 5:3-12)
20Isus se okrene prema učenicima i reče:
“Blago vama, siromasi,
jer imate kraljevstvo Božje!
21Blago vama koji ste sada gladni,
jer ćete se nasititi!
Blago vama koji sada plačete,
jer ćete se smijati!
22Blago vama kad vas ljudi zamrze,
kad vas izopće i pogrde
i prezru vaše ime kao zločinačko
zbog Sina Čovječjega!
23Kad se to dogodi, radujte se u poskakujte! Jer velika vas nagrada čeka na nebu. Tako su i njihovi očevi postupali prema prorocima.”
Pretkazanje nevolja
24“Teško vama, bogataši,
jer ste već primili svoju utjehu!
25Teško vama koji ste sada siti,
jer ćete gladovati!
Teško vama koji se sada smijete,
jer ćete tugovati i plakati!
26Teško vama kad vas svi budu hvalili,
jer su tako i lažne proroke hvalili njihovi!”
O ljubavi prema neprijatelju
(Mt 5:39-42)
27“Želite li me poslušati, kažem vam: Ljubite svoje neprijatelje! Činite dobro onima koji vas mrze. 28Blagoslivljajte one koji vas proklinju i molite se za one koji vas zlostavljaju. 29Udari li vas tko po obrazu, pružite mu i drugi. Uzima li vam tko ogrtač, dajte mu i košulju. 30Tko god vas što zamoli, dajte mu, a od onoga tko vam otima ne tražite svoje natrag. 31Činite drugima ono što biste htjeli da drugi čine vama!
32Mislite li da zaslužujete nagradu ako volite one koji vas vole? Ta i grešnici tako čine. 33I ako dobro činite onima koji vama čine dobro, zar ste zaslužili nagradu? To čine i grešnici! 34Ako posuđujete samo onima od kojih se nadate povratu, kakvu ste nagradu zaslužili? I grešnici posuđuju grešnicima da jednako prime natrag.
35Ali vi volite svoje neprijatelje. Činite dobro i posuđujte ne nadajući se ničemu zauzvrat. Tako će vam plaća biti velika i bit ćete djeca Svevišnjega koji je dobrostiv i prema nezahvalnicima i prema opakima. 36Budite milosrdni kao što je milosrdan vaš Otac.”
O osuđivanju drugih
(Mt 7:1-5)
37“Ne sudite i nećete biti suđeni. Ne osuđujte, da ne budete osuđeni. Praštajte i oprostit će vam se. 38Dajte, pa ćete i vi dobiti. Vaš će vam se dar vratiti u punoj i prepunoj mjeri, dobro nabijenoj, natresenoj, preobilnoj. Jer kakvom mjerom dajete, takvom će se i vama davati.”
39Zatim im Isus ispriča prispodobe: “Može li slijepac slijepca voditi? Obojica završe u jarku. 40Učenik nije veći od svojega učitelja, a tko je potpuno poučen, ravan je svojem učitelju.
41Što imaš gledati trun u oku svojega brata kad u vlastitome oku ni brvna ne opažaš? 42Kako ti, koji u vlastitome oku ne vidiš ni brvna, možeš reći bratu: ‘Daj da ti izvadim trun iz oka’? Licemjeru! Izvadi najprije brvno iz vlastitog oka, pa ćeš onda dobro vidjeti kako da izvadiš trun iz bratova!”
Prispodoba o stablu i plodovima
(Mt 7:17-20)
43“Dobro stablo ne može roditi nevaljalim plodom niti nevaljalo stablo može roditi dobrim plodom. 44Svako se stablo po plodu poznaje. Ne beru se s trnja smokve niti s gloga grožđe. 45Dobar čovjek iz svojega srca iznosi dobra djela, a zao iz svojega zlog srca zla djela. Jer usta govore ono čega je srce prepuno.”
Kuća na stijeni i kuća na pijesku
(Mt 7:24-27)
46“Zašto me dakle nazivate Gospodinom, a ne činite što vam zapovijedam? 47Reći ću vam kakav je svaki koji dolazi k meni, sluša što govorim i čini tako: 48on je poput čovjeka koji gradi kuću te iskopa dubok temelj i izgradi kuću na stijeni. Kad dođe poplava i navale bujice, ona ostane čvrsto stajati jer je dobro izgrađena. 49A onaj tko sluša riječi i ne čini tako jest poput čovjeka koji kuću izgradi na tlu, bez temelja. Kad na nju navali bujica, ona se brzo sruši i od nje ostane velika razvalina.”
