Jesus Is Tempted in the Desert
1Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan River. The Spirit led him into the desert. 2There the devil tempted him for 40 days. Jesus ate nothing during that time. At the end of the 40 days, he was hungry.
3The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
4Jesus answered, “It is written, ‘Man must not live only on bread.’ ” (Deuteronomy 8:3)
5Then the devil led Jesus up to a high place. In an instant, he showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world. 6He said to Jesus, “I will give you all their authority and glory. It has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7If you worship me, it will all be yours.”
8Jesus answered, “It is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God. He is the only one you should serve.’ ” (Deuteronomy 6:13)
9Then the devil led Jesus to Jerusalem. He had Jesus stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10It is written,
“ ‘The Lord will command his angels to take good care of you.
11They will lift you up in their hands.
Then you won’t trip over a stone.’ ” (Psalm 91:11,12)
12Jesus answered, “Scripture says, ‘Do not test the Lord your God.’ ” (Deuteronomy 6:16)
13When the devil finished all this tempting, he left Jesus until a better time.
Jesus Is Not Accepted in Nazareth
14Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Holy Spirit. News about him spread through the whole countryside. 15He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.
16Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. On the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue as he usually did. He stood up to read. 17And the scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. Jesus unrolled it and found the right place. There it is written,
18“The Spirit of the Lord is on me.
He has anointed me
to announce the good news to poor people.
He has sent me to announce freedom for prisoners.
He has sent me so that the blind will see again.
He wants me to set free those who are treated badly.
19And he has sent me to announce the year when he will set his people free.” (Isaiah 61:1,2)
20Then Jesus rolled up the scroll. He gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were staring at him. 21He began by saying to them, “Today this passage of Scripture is coming true as you listen.”
22Everyone said good things about him. They were amazed at the gracious words they heard from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.
23Jesus said, “Here is a saying you will certainly apply to me. ‘Doctor, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me this. ‘Do the things here in your hometown that we heard you did in Capernaum.’ ”
24“What I’m about to tell you is true,” he continued. “A prophet is not accepted in his hometown. 25I tell you for sure that there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah. And there had been no rain for three and a half years. There wasn’t enough food to eat anywhere in the land. 26But Elijah was not sent to any of those widows. Instead, he was sent to a widow in Zarephath near Sidon. 27And there were many in Israel who had skin diseases in the days of Elisha the prophet. But not one of them was healed except Naaman the Syrian.”
28All the people in the synagogue were very angry when they heard that. 29They got up and ran Jesus out of town. They took him to the edge of the hill on which the town was built. They planned to throw him off the cliff. 30But Jesus walked right through the crowd and went on his way.
Jesus Drives Out an Evil Spirit
31Then Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee. On the Sabbath day he taught the people. 32They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority.
33In the synagogue there was a man controlled by a demon, an evil spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice. 34“Go away!” he said. “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are. You are the Holy One of God!”
35“Be quiet!” Jesus said firmly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down in front of everybody. And it came out without hurting him.
36All the people were amazed. They said to each other, “What he says is amazing! With authority and power he gives orders to evil spirits. And they come out!” 37The news about Jesus spread throughout the whole area.
Jesus Heals Many People
38Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. At that time, Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever. So they asked Jesus to help her. 39He bent over her and commanded the fever to leave, and it left her. She got up right away and began to serve them.
40At sunset, people brought to Jesus all who were sick. He placed his hands on each one and healed them. 41Also, demons came out of many people. The demons shouted, “You are the Son of God!” But he commanded them to be quiet. He would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.
42At dawn, Jesus went out to a place where he could be by himself. The people went to look for him. When they found him, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43But he said, “I must announce the good news of God’s kingdom to the other towns also. That is why I was sent.” 44And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
Kuyesedwa kwa Yesu

3Mdierekezi anati kwa Iye, “Ngati ndiwe Mwana wa Mulungu, uza mwala uwu kuti usanduke buledi.”
4Yesu anayankha kuti, “Zalembedwa: ‘Munthu sadzakhala ndi moyo ndi chakudya chokha.’ ”
5Mdierekezi anamutengera Iye pamalo aatali ndipo mʼkamphindi namuonetsa maufumu onse a dziko lapansi. 6Ndipo anati kwa Iye, “Ndidzakupatsani ulamuliro ndi ulemerero wawo; pakuti anandipatsa ine, ndipo ndingathe kupereka kwa aliyense amene ndikufuna. 7Ngati mutandilambira, zonsezi zidzakhala zanu.”
8Yesu anayankha kuti, “Zalembedwa: ‘Pembedza Yehova Mulungu wako ndi kumutumikira Iye yekha.’ ”
9Mdierekezi anapita naye ku Yerusalemu namuyimiritsa pamwamba penipeni pa Nyumba ya Mulungu. Ndipo anati, “Ngati ndinu Mwana wa Mulungu dziponyeni nokha pansi kuchokera pano. 10Pakuti kwalembedwa,
“Adzalamulira angelo ake za iwe
kuti akutchinjirize mosamala;
11ndipo adzakunyamula ndi manja awo,
kuti phazi lako lisagunde pa mwala.”
12Yesu anayankha kuti, “Mawu akuti, ‘Musamuyese Yehova Mulungu wanu.’ ”
13Mdierekezi atamaliza mayesero awa onse, anamusiya Iye kufikira atapeza mpata wina.
Yesu Akanidwa ku Nazareti
14Yesu anabwerera ku Galileya mu mphamvu ya Mzimu Woyera, ndipo mbiri yake inafalikira ku madera onse a ku midzi. 15Iye ankaphunzitsa mʼmasunagoge awo, ndipo aliyense ankamulemekeza.
16Iye anapita ku Nazareti, kumene anakulira, ndipo pa tsiku la Sabata anakalowa mʼsunagoge, monga mwa chikhalidwe chake. Ndipo anayimirira kuti awerenge malemba. 17Anamupatsa buku la mneneri Yesaya. Atalitsekula, anapeza pamalo pamene panalembedwa kuti,
18“Mzimu wa Ambuye ali pa Ine;
chifukwa wandidzoza
kuti ndilalikire Uthenga Wabwino kwa osauka.
Wandituma kuti ndilalikire kwa a mʼndende kuti amasulidwe
ndi kwa osaona kuti apenyenso,
kumasulidwa kwa osautsidwa,
19ndi kulalikira za nthawi imene Ambuye adzakomere mtima anthu awo.”
20Kenaka Iye anatseka bukulo, nalibwezera kwa wotumikira ndipo anakakhala pansi. Maso a aliyense mʼsunagogemo anali pa Iye, 21ndipo anawawuza kuti, “Lero malemba awa akwaniritsidwa mmene mwamveramu.”
22Onse anayankhula zabwino za Iye ndipo anadabwa ndi mawu ogwira moyo amene anatuluka mʼkamwa mwake. Iwo anafunsa kuti, “Kodi uyu si mwana wa Yosefe?”
23Yesu anawawuza kuti, “Zoonadi, mudzandiwuza mwambi uwu: Singʼanga, dzichiritse wekha! Chitanso mʼmudzi wa kwanu kuno zimene ife tamva kuti Iwe unazichita ku Kaperenawo.”
24Iye anapitiriza kuti, “Zoonadi, ndikukuwuzani kuti palibe mneneri amene amavomerezedwa ku mudzi kwawo. 25Ine ndikukutsimikizirani kunali amayi ambiri amasiye mu Israeli mʼnthawi ya Eliya, kumwamba kutatsekedwa kwa zaka zitatu ndi theka ndipo kunali njala yayikulu mʼdziko lonselo. 26Komabe Eliya sanatumidwe kwa mmodzi mwa iwo, koma kwa mkazi wamasiye wa ku Zerefati ku chigawo cha Sidoni. 27Ndipo kunali akhate ambiri ku Israeli mʼnthawi ya mneneri Elisa, koma panalibe mmodzi mwa iwo anachiritsidwa kupatula Naamani wa ku Siriya.”
28Anthu onse mʼsunagogemo anapsa mtima atamva izi. 29Anayimirira namutulutsira kunja kwa mzindawo, ndipo anamutengera pamwamba pa phiri pamene mzindawo unamangidwapo, ndi cholinga chakuti amuponyere ku phompho. 30Koma Iye anangoyenda pakati pa gulu la anthulo nachokapo.
Yesu Atulutsa Mzimu Woyipa
31Kenaka Iye anapita ku Kaperenawo, mudzi wa ku Galileya, ndipo pa Sabata anayamba kuphunzitsa anthu. 32Iwo anadabwa ndi chiphunzitso chake chifukwa uthenga wake unali ndi ulamuliro.
33Mʼsunagogemo munali munthu wogwidwa ndi mzimu woyipa. Iye analira ndi mawu akulu, akuti 34“Aa! Kodi mukufuna chiyani kwa ife, Yesu wa ku Nazareti? Kodi mwabwera kudzatiwononga? Ndikudziwa kuti ndinu ndani, ndinu Woyerayo wa Mulungu!”
35Yesu anachidzudzula kwambiri nati, “Khala chete! Tuluka mwa iye.” Chiwandacho chinamugwetsa munthuyo pansi pamaso pa onse ndipo chinatuluka wosamupweteka.
36Anthu onse anadabwa ndipo anati kwa wina ndi mnzake, “Kodi chiphunzitso ichi ndi chotani? Ndi ulamuliro ndi mphamvu Iye akulamulira mizimu yoyipa ndipo ikutuluka!” 37Ndipo mbiri yake inafalikira madera onse ozungulira.
Yesu Achiritsa Anthu Ambiri
38Yesu anatuluka mʼsunagoge ndipo anapita kwa Simoni. Tsopano mpongozi wake wa Simoni amadwala malungo akulu, ndipo anamupempha Yesu kuti amuthandize. 39Ndipo anawerama nadzudzula malungowo ndipo anamusiya. Anadzuka nthawi yomweyo nayamba kuwatumikira.
40Pamene dzuwa linkalowa, anthu anabweretsa kwa Yesu onse amene anali ndi matenda osiyanasiyana, ndipo atasanjika manja ake pa aliyense, anachiritsidwa. 41Komanso ziwanda zinkatuluka mwa anthu ambiri, zikufuwula kuti, “Inu ndinu Mwana wa Mulungu!” Koma Iye anazidzudzula ndipo sanazilole kuyankhula chifukwa zimadziwa kuti Iye ndi Khristu.
42Kutacha, Yesu anapita ku malo a yekha. Anthu ankamufunafuna Iye ndipo pamene anafika kumene anali, anthuwo anayesetsa kumuletsa kuti asawachokere. 43Koma Iye anati, “Ine ndikuyenera kulalikira Uthenga Wabwino wa ufumu wa Mulungu ku mizinda inanso chifukwa ichi ndi chimene ananditumira.” 44Ndipo Iye anapitirirabe kulalikira mʼmasunagoge a ku Yudeya.
