Ezra Prays for the People
1After all these things had been done, the leaders came to me. They said, “The people of Israel have committed sins. Even the priests and Levites have sinned. They haven’t kept themselves separate from the nations around them. The Lord hates the practices of those nations. He hates what the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites and Jebusites do. He also hates what the Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians and Amorites do. 2The men of Israel have married the daughters of some of those people. They’ve also taken some of those women for their sons to marry. So they’ve mixed our holy nation with the nations around us. We leaders and officials have also married women who don’t worship the Lord. By doing this, we have led the way in breaking our covenant with the Lord.”
3When I heard that, I tore my inner robe and my coat. I pulled hair from my head and beard. I was so shocked I sat down. 4Then everyone who trembled with fear at God’s words gathered around me. That’s because the people who had returned from Babylon had not been faithful. So I was very upset. I just sat there until the time of the evening sacrifice.
5Then I got up. I had been very sad for quite a while. My inner robe and my coat were torn. I fell down on my knees. I spread my hands out to the Lord my God. 6I prayed,
“I’m filled with shame and dishonor, my God. I can hardly look to you and pray. That’s because our sins are piled up above our heads. Our guilt reaches all the way to the heavens. 7We are filled with it. It has been like that ever since the days of our people who lived long ago. Kings of other countries have killed many of us and our kings and priests with their swords. They’ve forced others to leave their own land. They’ve taken them away as prisoners. They’ve robbed others. They’ve made still others feel ashamed and dishonored. All these things have happened to us because we’ve committed so many sins. And that’s how things still are to this day.
8“But you are the Lord our God. Now you have shown us your kindness for a short time. That’s because you have allowed a few of us to remain here. Your temple has given us new hope. So you have made things easier for us. You have given us a little rest from our slavery. 9We are still slaves. But you are our God. You haven’t turned away from us. You haven’t left us in our slavery. You have been kind to us. The kings of Persia have seen it. You have given us new life to repair your temple and rebuild it. You have given us a place of safety in Judah and Jerusalem.
10“You are our God. What can we say after the way you have blessed us? We have turned away from your commands. 11You gave us your commands through your servants the prophets. You said, ‘You are entering the land to take it as your own. The sinful practices of its people have made the land impure. They have filled it with their “unclean” acts from one end to the other. The Lord hates all their practices. 12So don’t let your daughters marry their sons. And don’t let their daughters marry your sons. Don’t make a peace treaty with them at any time. Then you will be strong. You will eat the good things the land produces. And you will leave all of it to your children as their share. They and their children after them will enjoy it forever.’
13“Our evil acts and our terrible sins have brought about the things that have happened to us. You are our God. Because we sinned so much, you should have punished us even more than you have. But you have left many of your people alive. 14Suppose we don’t obey your commands again. And suppose we continue to marry people who commit sins that you hate. If we do, you will be so angry with us that you will destroy us. You won’t leave us even a few people. You won’t leave anyone alive. 15Lord, you are the God of Israel. You are holy. You always do what is right. Today you have left many of your people alive. Here we are with all our guilt. You see the guilt of our sin. Because we have sinned, not one of us can stand in front of you.”
이방 민족들과의 결혼
1그 후에 이스라엘 백성의 일부 지도자들이 나에게 백성들과 제사장들과 레 위 사람들이 이웃의 이방 민족들과 구별된 생활을 하지 않고 가나안 사람, 헷 사람, 브리스 사람, 여부스 사람, 암몬 사람, 모압 사람, 이집트 사람, 아모리 사람들의 풍습을 본받아 더러운 짓을 하며
2이들 이방 민족들과 서로 결혼하여 거룩한 민족의 순수성을 더럽혔으며 이 일에 앞장선 자들이 지도자들과 관리들이라고 일러 주었다.
3나는 이 말을 듣고 슬퍼서 옷을 찢고 머리털과 수염을 뜯으며 정신 없이 주저앉아 있었다.
4그때 하나님의 말씀을 두려워하는 자들이 이 백성의 죄 때문에 내 곁으로 모여들었다. 나는 비탄에 잠겨 그대로 앉아 있다가
5저녁 제사를 드릴 때에 슬픔을 머금고 일어나 찢어진 속옷과 겉옷을 입은 채 무릎을 꿇고 나의 하나님 여호와를 향해 두 손을 들어
6이렇게 기도하였다. “나의 하나님이시여, 내가 너무 부끄러워 주 앞에 머리를 들 수가 없습니다. 우리 죄가 우리 머리보다 높이 쌓여 하늘에 닿았습니다.
7우리 조상 때부터 지금까지 우리는 줄곧 죄만 지어 왔습니다. 우리의 죄 때문에 우리는 물론 우리 왕들과 제사장들이 외국 왕들의 손에 죽고 약탈을 당했으며 포로로 잡혀가 오늘날까지도 수모를 당하고 있습니다.
8이제 잠시 동안이나마 우리 하나님 여호와께서 우리에게 은혜를 베푸셔서 우리 소수의 사람들을 종살이하던 곳에서 돌아오게 하여 이 거룩한 곳에 안전하게 살도록 하시고 우리에게 새로운 삶을 주셨습니다.
9우리는 종이었으나 주는 우리를 그대로 내버려 두지 않으시고 페르시아 황제의 은혜를 입게 하시며 우리가 다시 힘을 얻어 폐허가 된 주의 성전을 재건하게 하시고 이 곳 유다와 예루살렘에서 우리를 안전하게 살도록 하셨습니다.
10“그러나 하나님이시여, 주께서 이런 은혜를 베푸신 후에도 우리가 주를 저버리고 주의 법을 어겼으니 이제 무슨 말을 할 수 있겠습니까?
11주께서는 전에 주의 종 예언자들을 통하여 우리에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. ‘너희가 들어가서 소유할 땅은 더러운 땅이다. 그 곳에 사는 이방 민족들이 그 땅을 온통 더럽고 추한 것으로 가득 채웠다.
12그러므로 그들과 서로 결혼하지 말고 그들의 평안과 번영을 추구하지 말아라. 그러면 너희가 막강해져서 번영을 누리며 그 땅을 너희 후손에게 유산으로 길이 물려 주게 될 것이다.’
13“지금까지 우리가 당한 모든 일은 우리의 악한 행위와 큰 죄의 결과였습니다. 그러나 우리 하나님은 우리가 지은 죄에 비해 우리의 형벌을 가볍게 하셔서 이와 같이 우리를 살아 남게 하셨습니다.
14그런데도 우리가 다시 주의 명령을 어기고 이 악한 백성들과 결혼하였으니 어찌 주께서 우리에게 분노하시지 않겠습니까? 분명히 주는 우리를 전멸시키고 한 사람도 살아 남지 못하게 하실 것입니다.
15이스라엘의 하나님 여호와여, 주는 의로우신 분이십니다. 우리가 오늘날 이처럼 살아 남긴 했습니다만 우리가 주께 범죄하였으므로 감히 주 앞에 설 수가 없습니다.”
