Uzziah King of Judah
1Uzziah began to rule as king over Judah. It was in the 27th year that Jeroboam was king of Israel. Uzziah was the son of Amaziah. 2Uzziah was 16 years old when he became king. He ruled in Jerusalem for 52 years. His mother’s name was Jekoliah. She was from Jerusalem. 3Uzziah did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father Amaziah had done. 4But the high places weren’t removed. The people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.
5The Lord caused King Uzziah to suffer from a skin disease until the day he died. He lived in a separate house. His son Jotham was in charge of the palace. Jotham ruled over the people of the land.
6The other events of the rule of Uzziah are written down. Everything he did is written in the official records of the kings of Judah. 7Uzziah joined the members of his family who had already died. He was buried near them in the City of David. Uzziah’s son Jotham became the next king after him.
Zechariah King of Israel
8Zechariah became king of Israel in Samaria. It was in the 38th year that Uzziah was king of Judah. Zechariah ruled for six months. He was the son of Jeroboam, the son of Jehoash. 9Zechariah did what was evil in the eyes of the Lord. He did what the kings of Israel before him had done. He didn’t turn away from the sins Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, had committed. Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit those same sins.
10Shallum made evil plans against Zechariah. He attacked Zechariah in front of the people and killed him. Then he became the next king after him. Shallum was the son of Jabesh. 11The other events of the rule of Zechariah are written down. They are written in the official records of the kings of Israel. 12What happened to Zechariah is what the Lord said would happen. He had spoken that message to Jehu. The Lord had said, “Your sons after you will sit on the throne of Israel. They will rule until the time of your children’s grandchildren.” (2 Kings 10:30)
Shallum King of Israel
13Shallum became king of Israel. It was in the 39th year that Uzziah was king of Judah. Shallum ruled in Samaria for one month. He was the son of Jabesh. 14Menahem went from Tirzah up to Samaria. There he attacked Shallum, the son of Jabesh. Menahem killed him and became the next king after him. Menahem was the son of Gadi.
15The other events of Shallum’s rule are written down. The evil things he planned are written down. All these things are written in the official records of the kings of Israel.
16At that time Menahem started out from Tirzah and attacked Tiphsah. He attacked everyone in the city and the area around it. That’s because they refused to open their gates for him. He destroyed Tiphsah. He ripped open all their pregnant women.
Menahem King of Israel
17Menahem became king of Israel. It was in the 39th year that Uzziah was king of Judah. Menahem ruled in Samaria for ten years. He was the son of Gadi. 18Menahem did what was evil in the eyes of the Lord. During his entire rule he didn’t turn away from the sins Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, had committed. Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit those same sins.
19Then Tiglath-Pileser marched into the land of Israel. He was king of Assyria. Menahem gave him 38 tons of silver to get his help. He wanted to make his control over the kingdom stronger. 20Menahem forced Israel to give him that money. Every wealthy person had to give him 20 ounces of silver. All of it went to the king of Assyria. So he pulled his troops back. He didn’t stay in the land anymore.

Pekahiah King of Israel
23Pekahiah became king of Israel in Samaria. It was in the 50th year that Uzziah was king of Judah. Pekahiah ruled for two years. He was the son of Menahem. 24Pekahiah did what was evil in the eyes of the Lord. He didn’t turn away from the sins Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, had committed. Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit those same sins. 25One of Pekahiah’s chief officers was Pekah. He was the son of Remaliah. Pekah made evil plans against Pekahiah. He took 50 men from Gilead with him and killed Pekahiah. Pekah also killed Argob and Arieh. He killed all of them in the safest place in the royal palace at Samaria. So Pekah killed Pekahiah. He became the next king after him.

Pekah King of Israel
27Pekah became king of Israel in Samaria. It was in the 52nd year that Uzziah was king of Judah. Pekah ruled for 20 years. He was the son of Remaliah. 28Pekah did what was evil in the eyes of the Lord. He didn’t turn away from the sins Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, had committed. Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit those same sins.
29During the rule of Pekah, the king of Israel, Tiglath-Pileser marched into the land again. He was king of Assyria. He captured the towns of Ijon, Abel Beth Maakah, Janoah, Kedesh and Hazor. He also captured the lands of Gilead and Galilee. That included the whole territory of Naphtali. He took the people away from their own land. He sent them off to Assyria. 30Then Hoshea made evil plans against Pekah, the son of Remaliah. Hoshea was the son of Elah. Hoshea attacked Pekah and killed him. Then Hoshea became the next king after him. It was in the 20th year of the rule of Jotham, the son of Uzziah.

Jotham King of Judah
32Jotham began to rule as king over Judah. It was in the second year that Pekah was king of Israel. He was the son of Remaliah. Jotham was the son of Uzziah. 33Jotham was 25 years old when he became king. He ruled in Jerusalem for 16 years. His mother’s name was Jerusha. She was the daughter of Zadok. 34Jotham did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father Uzziah had done. 35But the high places weren’t removed. The people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there. Jotham rebuilt the Upper Gate of the Lord’s temple.
36The other events of the rule of Jotham are written down. Everything he did is written in the official records of the kings of Judah. 37In those days the Lord began to send Rezin and Pekah against Judah. Rezin was king of Aram. Pekah was the son of Remaliah. 38Jotham joined the members of his family who had already died. He was buried in the family tomb in the city of King David. Jotham’s son Ahaz became the next king after him.
De koningen van Juda en Israël
1Toen Jerobeam zevenentwintig jaar in Israël aan de macht was, werd Azaria, de zoon van Amazia, koning over Juda. 2Jecholia, afkomstig uit Jeruzalem, was zijn moeder. Bij zijn troonsbestijging was hij zestien jaar. Hij regeerde tweeënvijftig jaar in Jeruzalem. 3Azaria was een goede koning en net als zijn vader Amazia deed hij wat goed is in de ogen van de Here. 4Maar evenals zijn voorgangers haalde hij de altaren op de heuvels waar zijn onderdanen offers en reukwerk verbrandden, niet weg. 5De Here trof hem met een huidziekte die hij tot aan zijn dood hield, hij leefde al die tijd in zijn eentje in een afgezonderd huis. Zijn zoon Jotham bestuurde het land in zijn plaats.
6De rest van de geschiedenis van Azaria is beschreven in de Kronieken van de koningen van Juda. 7Na zijn overlijden werd Azaria begraven bij zijn voorgangers in de Stad van David. Toen werd zijn zoon Jotham koning. 8De nieuwe koning van Israël was Zacharia, de zoon van koning Jerobeam. Zes maanden duurde zijn regering. Hij kwam aan de macht toen koning Azaria van Juda achtendertig jaar op de troon zat. 9In de ogen van de Here was Zacharia een goddeloze koning, net als zijn voorouders. Evenals Jerobeam de Eerste, de zoon van Nebat, moedigde hij zijn onderdanen aan bij het dienen van afgoden. 10Sallum, de zoon van Jabes, smeedde echter een complot tegen Zacharia, vermoordde hem voor de ogen van het volk en riep zichzelf uit tot koning.
11De overige gegevens van Zachariaʼs bewind zijn te vinden in de Kronieken van de koningen van Israël. 12Hiermee was de uitspraak van de Here tegenover Jehu werkelijkheid geworden: zijn zoon, kleinzoon en achterkleinzoon waren koning geworden.
13De nieuwe koning van Israël was Sallum, de zoon van Jabes. Sallum regeerde slechts één maand. In Juda regeerde toen koning Uzzia, die aan zijn negenendertigste regeringsjaar bezig was. 14Eén maand nadat Sallum koning was geworden, kwam Menahem, de zoon van Gadi, vanuit Tirza naar Samaria. Hij vermoordde de koning en riep zichzelf tot nieuwe koning uit. 15Verdere gegevens over koning Sallum en zijn samenzwering zijn te vinden in de Kronieken van de koningen van Israël. 16Menahem verwoestte de stad Tifsah en het omliggende gebied tot aan Tirza, want de inwoners van de stad weigerden hem als koning te erkennen. Hij doodde de hele bevolking en hakte de zwangere vrouwen in stukken. 17Menahem werd de nieuwe koning van Israël. Zijn bewind in Samaria duurde tien jaar en begon toen koning Azaria van Juda al negenendertig jaar aan de macht was. 18Menahem was echter een goddeloze koning. Hij vereerde afgoden, net als koning Jerobeam de Eerste, die de Israëlieten had aangevoerd bij het bedrijven van de ergste zonden. 19-20 Toen deed koning Pul van Assyrië een inval in het land. Koning Menahem kocht hem echter af met een geschenk van dertigduizend kilo zilver, zodat zijn macht nog groter zou worden. Menahem haalde dat geld bij de rijken vandaan. Hij liet hen een extra belasting van vijfhondervijftig gram zilver per persoon betalen!
21De verdere geschiedenis van koning Menahem staat beschreven in de Kronieken van de koningen van Israël. 22Na zijn dood werd zijn zoon Pekahia de nieuwe koning.
23Pekahia, de zoon van koning Menahem, werd de nieuwe koning van Israël. Zijn bewind in Samaria duurde twee jaar. Koning Azaria van Juda zat toen al vijftig jaar op de troon.
24Ook Pekahia was een goddeloze koning en zette de afgodenverering voort die was begonnen onder Jerobeam de Eerste. Jerobeam had de Israëlieten indertijd op dat verkeerde spoor gebracht. 25Pekah, de zoon van Remalia, de opperbevelhebber van zijn leger, smeedde samen met vijftig mannen uit Gilead een complot en vermoordde hem in het paleis in Samaria. Bij die gelegenheid werden ook Argob en Arje gedood. Zo werd Pekah de nieuwe koning. 26De verdere geschiedenis van koning Pekahia is te lezen in de Kronieken van de koningen van Israël.
27Pekah, de zoon van Remalia, werd de nieuwe koning van Israël. Zijn regering duurde twintig jaar. Ook hij was een tijdgenoot van koning Azaria van Juda, die daar al tweeënvijftig jaar koning was. 28Pekah was ook een goddeloze koning en volgde het voorbeeld van Jerobeam de Eerste, de zoon van Nebat, die heel Israël aanvoerde in de zonde van de afgodendienst. 29Tijdens Pekahs bewind viel de Assyrische koning Tiglatpileser Israël aan. Hij nam de steden Ijhon, Abel-Bet-Maächa, Janoah, Kedes, Hazor, Gilead en Galilea, heel het gebied van Naftali in. De bevolking werd in ballingschap naar Assyrië weggevoerd. 30Toen smeedde Hosea, de zoon van Ela, een complot tegen Pekah en vermoordde hem. De nieuwe koning van Israël werd Hosea. Hij was een tijdgenoot van Jotham, de zoon van Uzzia, die sinds twintig jaar koning van Juda was.
31De verdere gebeurtenissen tijdens de regering van Pekah staan te lezen in de Kronieken van de koningen van Israël. 32-33 De nieuwe koning van Juda was Jotham, de zoon van koning Uzzia. Bij zijn troonsbestijging was hij vijfentwintig jaar. Zestien jaar duurde zijn bewind in Jeruzalem. Zijn moeder was Jerusa, de dochter van Zadok. In Israël regeerde Pekah, de zoon van Remalia, die op dat moment twee jaar aan de macht was. 34-35 Jotham was over het algemeen een goede koning. Evenals zijn vader Uzzia volgde hij de Here. Maar de altaren op de heuvels werden niet verwoest, zodat zijn onderdanen daar hun offers en reukwerk bleven verbranden. Tijdens Jothams bewind werd de bovenste poort van de tempel van de Here gebouwd.
36De rest van Jothams geschiedenis staat beschreven in de Kronieken van de koningen van Juda. 37In die dagen zorgde de Here ervoor dat koning Rezin van Syrië en koning Pekah van Israël samen Juda aanvielen. 38Na zijn dood werd Jotham begraven bij de andere koningen van Juda op de koninklijke begraafplaats in de Stad van David. Zijn zoon Achaz volgde hem op als koning.
