En belägringsvall är rest mot oss,
och med käpp slår de
Israels domare på kinden.
2”Men du Betlehem i Efrata,
så oansenlig bland Judas släkter,
från dig ska det ges åt mig
en som ska härska över Israel,
en som har sitt ursprung i det förflutna,
i eviga tider.”
3Därför ska de bli övergivna,
fram till den tid
då hon som ska föda har fött.
Då ska de som finns kvar av hans bröder
återvända till israeliterna.
4Han ska träda fram
och vara herde i Herrens kraft,
i Herrens, sin Guds namns majestät.
De ska leva i lugn och ro,
för han ska vara stor över hela jorden.
5Han ska vara vår frid.
Och när assyrierna invaderar vårt land
och tränger in i våra palats
ställer vi mot dem sju herdar
och åtta ledande män.
6De ska härska över Assyrien med svärd
och över Nimrod med dragna vapen.
Han ska befria oss från assyrierna,
när de anfaller vårt land
och tågar in på vårt territorium.
7De som är kvar av Jakob
ska vara mitt ibland många folk
som dagg från Herren,
som regnskurar på gräset,
som inte väntar på en människa
eller dröjer för mänsklighetens skull.
8De som är kvar av Jakob
ska vara mitt ibland många folk
som ett lejon bland djuren i skogen,
som ett ungt lejon bland fårhjordar,
som, där det går fram, trampar ner och river,
och vars byte ingen kan rädda.
9Låt din hand lyftas mot dina motståndare,
låt alla dina fiender förintas.
10”Den dagen, säger Herren,
utplånar jag dina hästar som finns hos dig
och förstör dina stridsvagnar.
11Jag förstör städerna i ditt land
och river ner alla dina fästningar.
12Jag gör slut på all trolldom hos dig,
det ska inte längre finnas några teckentydare hos dig.
13Jag river ner dina utskurna gudabilder
och stoder som finns hos dig.
Du ska inte mer tillbe någonting
som du med dina händer har gjort.
14Jag utrotar dina asherapålar
och ödelägger dina städer.
15Jag ska i vrede och förbittring
ta hämnd på de folk som vägrat att lyda.”
