1And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cæsar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. 2(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 3And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 4And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judæa, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 5To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. 6And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 8And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. 15And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. 16And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. 18And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. 20And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. 21And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb. 22And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; 23(As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;) 24And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons. 25And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. 26And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, 28Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, 29Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: 30For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, 31Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; 32A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. 33And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him. 34And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; 35(Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. 36And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity; 37And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. 38And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem. 39And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth. 40And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him. 41Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. 42And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. 43And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. 44But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. 45And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. 46And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. 47And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. 48And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. 49And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? 50And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. 51And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. 52And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

イエスの誕生
1そのころ、皇帝アウグストが全ローマ帝国の住民登録をせよと命じました。 2これは、クレニオがシリヤの総督だった時に行われた最初の住民登録でした。 3登録のため、国中の者がそれぞれ先祖の故郷へ帰りました。 4ヨセフは王家の血筋だったので、ガリラヤ地方のナザレから、ダビデ王の出身地ユダヤのベツレヘムまで行かなければなりません。 5婚約者のマリヤも連れて行きましたが、この時にはもう、マリヤのお腹は目立つほどになっていました。 6そして、ベツレヘムにいる間に、 7マリヤは初めての子を産みました。男の子です。彼女はその子を布でくるみ、飼葉おけに寝かせました。宿屋が満員で、泊めてもらえなかったからです。
8その夜、町はずれの野原では、羊飼いが数人、羊の番をしていました。 9そこへ突然、天使が現れ、主の栄光があたり一面をさっと照らしたのです。これを見た羊飼いたちは恐ろしさのあまり震え上がりました。 10天使は言いました。「こわがることはありません。これまで聞いたこともない、すばらしい出来事を知らせてあげましょう。すべての人への喜びの知らせです。 11今夜、ダビデの町（ベツレヘム）で救い主がお生まれになりました。この方こそ主キリストです。 12布にくるまれ、飼葉おけに寝かされている幼子、それが目じるしです。」 13するとたちまち、さらに大ぜいの天使たちが現れ、神をほめたたえました。
14「天では、神に栄光があるように。
地上では、平和が、
神に喜ばれる人々にあるように。」
15天使の大軍が天に帰ると、羊飼いたちは、「さあ、ベツレヘムへ行こう。主が知らせてくださった、すばらしい出来事を見てこようではないか」と、互いに言い合いました。 16羊飼いたちは息せき切って町まで駆けて行き、ようやくヨセフとマリヤとを捜しあてました。飼葉おけには幼子が寝ていました。 17何もかも天使の言ったとおりです。羊飼いたちはこのことをほかの人に話して聞かせました。 18それを聞いた人たちはみなひどく驚きましたが、 19マリヤはこれらのことをすべて心に納めて思い巡らしていました。 20羊飼いたちは、天使が語ったとおり幼子に会えたので、神を賛美しながら帰って行きました。
21八日たち、割礼を行う日になり、その子は、母の胎内に宿る前から天使に示されたとおり、「イエス」と名づけられました。
22モーセの律法によるきよめ（母親のきよめと幼子の献児）の時が来ると、両親はイエスを主にささげるため、エルサレムに連れて来ました。 23モーセの律法には、「女から最初に生まれる子が男であれば、その子を主にささげなければならない」とあったのです。 24両親は、決まりどおり、「山鳩一つがい、または家鳩のひな二羽」をきよめの供え物としてささげました。 25その日、神殿には、エルサレムに住むシメオンという人がいました。信仰のあつい正しい人で、聖霊に満たされ、イスラエルにメシヤ（救い主）の来るのを待ち望んでいました。 26神が遣わされるその方を見るまでは絶対に死なない、と聖霊のお告げを受けていたのです。 27その日彼は、聖霊に導かれて神殿に来て、マリヤとヨセフがイエスを主にささげるためにやって来るのに出会ったのです。 28シメオンはイエスを抱き上げ、神を賛美しました。
29「主よ。今こそ私は安心して死ねます。
30お約束どおり、この目でメシヤを見、
31あなたが遣わされた救い主に
お会いしたのですから。
32この方はすべての国を照らす光、
あなたの民イスラエルの光栄です。」
33ヨセフとマリヤはそこに立ったまま、驚いてシメオンの言うことを聞いていました。 34-35シメオンは両親を祝福してから、マリヤに言いました。「剣があなたの胸を刺し通すでしょう。イスラエルの多くの人がこの子を信じようとしないで、滅びるからです。しかし、この子によって大きな喜びを受ける人も多くいます。こうして、多くの人の思いが現されるのです。」
36-37その日、女預言者アンナも神殿にいました。彼女はアセル族のパヌエルの娘で、非常に年をとっていました。七年の結婚生活の後、未亡人で通し、もう八十四歳にもなっていたのです。彼女は神殿を一歩も離れず、祈りと断食に明け暮れ、神に仕える毎日を送っていました。 38この時、そこにいたアンナも神に感謝をささげ、救い主の来るのを待ちわびていたエルサレムのすべての人に、メシヤがおいでになったことを語りました。
少年イエス
39モーセの律法どおりにすべてのことをすませると、ヨセフとマリヤはガリラヤのナザレに帰りました。 40イエスは成長してたくましくなり、たいへん賢い子だと評判になるほどでした。神も絶えずイエスを祝福してくださいました。
41さて、両親は過越の祭り（パン種を入れないパンを食べる、年に一度のユダヤ人の祭り）には、毎年かかさずエルサレムに行きました。 42十二歳の時、イエスは祭りの慣習に従って、両親についてエルサレムに行きました。 43祭りが終わると、両親は帰途につきましたが、イエスはそのままエルサレムに残っていました。そうとは知らない両親は、 44てっきりほかの人たちといっしょに帰っているものと考え、気にもとめず、その日一日、旅を続けました。ところが、夕方になってもイエスの姿が見あたりません。あわてて、親族や友人たちの間を捜し始めました。 45それでも見つからず、とうとう、捜しながらエルサレムまで引き返しました。
46三日後、ようやくイエスの居場所がわかりました。なんと、神殿で律法の教師たちを相手にむずかしい議論をしていたのです。 47取り巻く見物人はみな、イエスの知恵と答えに舌を巻いていました。 48両親は、わが子が落ち着きはらって座っているのを見て、驚きました。「どうしてこんなことをしたのです。お父さんもお母さんも、どんなに心配して捜し回ったか知れないんですよ」とマリヤが言いました。 49ところがイエスは、「なぜ捜したのですか。ぼくが父の家（神殿）にいるとわからなかったのですか」と答えました。 50こう言われても、どういうことか、両親にはさっぱりわかりませんでした。
51それからイエスは、両親といっしょにナザレに帰り、彼らによく仕えました。マリヤは、このことをみな心にとめておきました。
52イエスは身長も伸び、ますます知恵も加わって、神にも人にも愛されました。
