1Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, 2Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; 3It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus, 4That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.
5¶ There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judæa, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. 6And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 7And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years. 8And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course, 9According to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. 10And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense. 11And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. 13But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. 14And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. 15For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb. 16And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. 17And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. 18And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. 19And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. 20And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season. 21And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple. 22And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless. 23And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house. 24And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying, 25Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men. 26And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. 29And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. 30And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? 35And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. 36And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. 37For with God nothing shall be impossible. 38And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. 39And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; 40And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. 41And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: 42And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. 43And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. 45And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. 46And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, 47And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. 48For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. 49For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. 50And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. 51He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. 52He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. 53He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. 54He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; 55As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever. 56And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house. 57Now Elisabeth’s full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. 58And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her. 59And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. 60And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. 61And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. 62And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. 63And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all. 64And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God. 65And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judæa. 66And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him. 67And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, 68Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, 69And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; 70As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: 71That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; 72To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; 73The oath which he sware to our father Abraham, 74That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, 75In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. 76And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; 77To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, 78Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, 79To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. 80And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

神を愛する親愛なる友へ

ザカリヤへの約束
5私の話は、ヘロデがユダヤの王であった時代に、ユダヤの祭司（神殿で神に仕える人）をしていたザカリヤという人のことから始まります。ザカリヤは神殿で奉仕するアビヤの組の一員で、妻エリサベツも祭司の家系でアロンの子孫でした。 6この夫婦は神を愛し、神のおきてを忠実に守り、心から従っていました。 7しかし、エリサベツは子どものできない体だったので、夫婦には子どもがなく、二人ともすっかり年をとっていました。
8さて、ザカリヤの組が週の当番となり、彼は神殿で祭司の務めをしていましたが、 9祭司職の習慣に従ってくじを引いたところ、聖所に入って主の前に香をたくという光栄ある務めが当たりました。 10香がたかれている間、民衆は神殿の庭で祈るのです。大ぜいの人が集まっていました。 11ザカリヤが聖所で香をたいていると、突然、天使が現れ、香をたく壇の右側に立ったではありませんか。 12ザカリヤはびっくりし、言い知れぬ恐怖に襲われました。 13しかし、天使は言いました。「ザカリヤよ。こわがることはありません。うれしい知らせなのだから。神が、あなたの祈りをかなえてくださったのです。エリサベツは男の子を産みます。その子にヨハネという名前をつけなさい。 14その子はあなたがたの喜びとなり、楽しみとなります。また多くの人もあなたがたと共に喜びます。 15その子が、主の前に偉大な者となるからです。彼はぶどう酒や強い酒は絶対に飲みません。生まれる前から聖霊に満たされており、 16やがて多くのユダヤ人を神に立ち返らせるのです。 17昔の預言者（神に託されたことばを伝える人）エリヤのように、たくましい霊と力にあふれて、メシヤ（ヘブル語で、救い主）の来られる前ぶれをし、人々にメシヤを迎える準備をさせます。大人には子どものような素直な心を呼び覚まし、逆らう者には信仰心を起こさせるのです。」 18ザカリヤは答えました。「そんなことは信じられません。私はもう老いぼれですし、妻も年をとっているのです。」 19「私はガブリエル、神の前に立つ者です。神がこの喜びの知らせを伝えるために、私を遣わされたのです。 20その私のことばをあなたは信じなかったので、あなたは神に打たれて口がきけなくなります。子どもが生まれるまで話すことはできません。その時が来れば、必ず私の言ったとおりになるのです。」
21外の人たちは、ザカリヤが出て来るのを、今や遅しと待ちかまえていましたが、なぜそんなに手間どっているのか不思議でなりません。 22そして、ようやく彼が出てきたのですが、口がきけません。しかし人々は、ザカリヤの身ぶりから、きっと神殿の中で幻を見たのだろうと考えました。 23ザカリヤは残りの期間の奉仕をすませ、家に帰りました。
24まもなくエリサベツは妊娠し、五か月間、家に引きこもっていました。 25エリサベツは、「主は私に子どもを与えて、恥を取り除いてくださった。なんとあわれみ深いお方でしょう」と言いました。
マリヤへの約束
26その翌月、神は天使ガブリエルを、ガリラヤのナザレという町に住むマリヤという処女のところへお遣わしになりました。 27この娘は、ダビデ王の子孫にあたるヨセフという人の婚約者でした。 28ガブリエルはマリヤに声をかけました。「おめでとう、恵まれた女よ。主が共におられます。」
29これを聞いたマリヤは、すっかり戸惑い、このあいさつは、いったいどういう意味なのかと考え込んでしまいました。 30すると、天使が言いました。「こわがらなくてもいいのです、マリヤ。神様があなたにすばらしいことをしてくださるのです。 31あなたはみごもって、男の子を産みます。その子を『イエス』と名づけなさい。 32彼は非常に偉大な人になり、神の子と呼ばれます。神である主は、その子に先祖ダビデの王座をお与えになります。 33彼は永遠にイスラエルを治め、その国はいつまでも続くのです。」 34マリヤは尋ねました。「どうして私に子どもができましょう。まだ結婚もしておりませんのに。」 35「聖霊があなたに下り、神の力があなたをおおうのです。ですから、生まれてくる子どもは聖なる者、神の子と呼ばれます。 36ちょうど半年前、あなたのいとこのエリサベツも、『不妊の女』と言われていたのに、あの年になってみごもりました。 37神の約束は、必ずそのとおりになるのです。」 38「私は主のはしためにすぎません。何もかも主のお言いつけどおりにいたします。どうぞ、いま言われたとおりになりますように。」マリヤがこう言うと、天使は見えなくなりました。
39-40数日後、マリヤはユダヤの山地へ急ぎました。そして、ザカリヤの住む町へ行き、エリサベツを訪ねました。 41マリヤのあいさつを聞くと、エリサベツの子が、お腹の中で跳びはね、エリサベツは聖霊に満たされました。 42彼女は喜びを抑えきれず、大声でマリヤに言いました。「あなたほどすばらしい恵みを受けた女性はいないでしょう。あなたの子が、神様の大きな誉れを表すようになるのですから。 43主のお母様がおいでくださるとは光栄です。 44あなたが入って来てあいさつされた時、私の子どもがお腹の中で喜び躍りました。 45神様が語られたことは必ずそのとおりになると信じたので、神様はあなたに、このような祝福をくださったのです。」
46マリヤは言いました。
「ああ、心から主を賛美します。
47救い主である神様を心から喜びます。
48神様は取るに足りない私のような者さえ、
お心にとめてくださいました。
これから永遠に、どの時代の人々も、
私を神に祝福された者と呼ぶでしょう。
49力ある聖なる方が、
私に大きなことをしてくださったからです。
50そのあわれみは、いつまでも、
神を恐れ敬う者の上にとどまります。
51その御手はどんなに力強いことでしょう。
主は心の高ぶった者を追い散らし、
52権力をふるう者を王座から引きずり降ろし、
身分の低い者を高く引き上げ、
53飢え渇いた者を満ち足らせ、
金持ちを何も持たせずに追い返されました。
54主は約束を忘れず、
しもべイスラエルをお助けになりました。
55先祖アブラハムとその子孫を、
永遠にあわれむと約束してくださったとおりに。」
56マリヤは、エリサベツの家に三か月ほどいてから、家に帰りました。
ヨハネの誕生
57さて、エリサベツの待ちに待った日が来て、男の子が生まれました。 58このニュースはたちまち近所の人たちや親類の間に伝わり、人々は、神がエリサベツを心にかけてくださったことを心から喜び合いました。 59子どもが生まれて八日目に、友人や親類が集まりました。その子に割礼（男子の性器の包皮を切り取る儀式）を行うためです。だれもが、子どもの名前は父親の名を継いで、「ザカリヤ」になるものとばかり思っていました。 60ところがエリサベツは、「いいえ、この子にはヨハネという名をつけます」と言うのです。 61「親族にそのような名前の者は一人もいないのに。」 62人々は、父親のザカリヤに身ぶりで尋ねました。 63ザカリヤは、書くものがほしいと合図し、それに「この子の名はヨハネ」と書いたので、みんなはびっくりしました。 64すると、とたんにザカリヤの口が開き、話せるようになったのです。彼は神を賛美し始めました。 65これには近所の人たちも驚き、このニュースはユダヤの山地一帯に広まりました。 66人々はその出来事を心にとめ、「この子はいったい、将来どんな人物になるのだろう。確かにこの子には、主の守りと助けがある」とうわさしました。
67さて、父親のザカリヤは聖霊に満たされ、こう預言しました。
68「イスラエルの神、主をほめたたえよう。
主は来て、ご自分の民を解放し、
69そのしもべダビデ王の血筋から、
力ある救い主を遣わされた。
70ずっと昔から、聖なる預言者を通して
約束されたとおりに。
71救い主は、私たちを憎むすべての敵から
救い出してくださる。
72-73主は私たちの先祖をあわれみ、
特にアブラハムをあわれみ、
彼と結んだ聖なる契約を果たされた。
74私たちを敵の手から解放し、
恐れず主に仕える者としてくださった。
75私たちはきよい者、
神の前に立つにふさわしい者とされた。
76幼い息子よ。
おまえは栄光ある神の預言者と呼ばれよう。
おまえがメシヤのために道を備え、
77主の民に、罪を赦され、
救われる道を教えるからだ。
78これはみな、ただ神の深いあわれみによることだ。
天の夜明けがいま訪れようとしている。
79その光は、
暗黒と死の陰にうずくまる者たちを照らし、
私たちを平和の道へと導くのだ。」
80ヨハネは成長し、心から神を愛する者となり、イスラエルの人々の前で公に語り始めるまで、たった一人、荒野に住んでいました。
