1Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. 2For they have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons: so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of those lands: yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this trespass. 3And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonied. 4Then were assembled unto me every one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the transgression of those that had been carried away; and I sat astonied until the evening sacrifice.
5¶ And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God,9.5 heaviness: or, affliction 6And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens.9.6 trespass: or, guiltiness 7Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great trespass unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day. 8And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.9.8 space: Heb. moment9.8 a nail: or, a pin: that is, a constant and sure abode 9For we were bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.9.9 to repair: Heb. to set up 10And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments, 11Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land with the filthiness of the people of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness.9.11 by: Heb. by the hand of9.11 from…: Heb. from mouth to mouth 12Now therefore give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth for ever: that ye may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children for ever. 13And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such deliverance as this;9.13 hast punished…: Heb. hast withheld beneath our iniquities 14Should we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? wouldest not thou be angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no remnant nor escaping? 15O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.

Esras bön inför allt folket
1Efter att detta var avslutat kom ledarna till mig och sa: ”Israeliterna, prästerna och leviterna har inte avskilt sig från landets folk och deras avskyvärda seder, från kanaanéer, hettiter, perisséer, jevuséer, ammoniter, moabiter, egypter och amoréer. 2De har tagit kvinnor från dessa folk till hustrur åt sig och sina söner. Det heliga släktet har blandats med landets folk, och ledare och styresmän har varit de första i denna otrohet.”
3När jag hörde detta rev jag sönder mina kläder och min mantel, slet mitt hår och mitt skägg och blev sittande bedrövad. 4Alla som fruktade Israels Gud samlades hos mig på grund av trolösheten hos dem som hade återvänt. Jag satt kvar, bedrövad, ända till kvällsoffret. 5Vid kvällsoffret reste jag mig ur min bedrövelse, och i mina trasiga kläder och sönderrivna mantel föll jag ner på knä med lyfta händer mot Herren, min Gud, 6och bad:
O min Gud, jag skäms och blygs för att lyfta mitt ansikte till dig, min Gud, för våra synder har växt oss över huvudet och vår skuld är så stor att den når upp till himlen. 7Från våra förfäders tid intill nu har vår skuld varit stor. För våra synders skull har vi, våra kungar och präster utlämnats åt främmande kungar, åt fångenskap och plundring och skam, precis som nu. 8Men nu har Herren, vår Gud, gett oss ett litet ögonblick av nåd och låtit en rest av oss bli kvar och gett oss en trygg plats i hans helgedom. Vår Gud har gett våra ögon en ljusning, och vi får se en befrielse från vårt slaveri. 9För vi är slavar, men vår Gud har inte övergivit oss i vårt slaveri utan han har låtit oss finna nåd inför Persiens kungar. Han har gett oss nytt liv, och vi kan på nytt bygga upp vår Guds hus och Jerusalem ur dess ruiner, och få en trygg plats i Juda och Jerusalem.
10Vår Gud, vad kan vi nu säga efter allt detta? Vi har övergett dina bud, 11som du gav oss genom dina tjänare profeterna och sa: ”Det land ni ska ta i besittning är ett orent land genom invånarnas orenhet och deras avskyvärda handlingar som de fyllt landet med, från den ena ändan till den andra. 12Därför ska ni inte ge era döttrar åt deras söner och inte ta deras döttrar till hustrur åt era söner. Ni ska aldrig främja deras lycka och välfärd. Då ska ni bli starka och få äta av det goda som landet ger och lämna det i arv åt era barn för all framtid.”
13Efter allt som har drabbat oss genom våra onda gärningar och genom vår stora skuld har du, vår Gud, ändå skonat oss och inte straffat oss som våra gärningar har förtjänat utan lämnat kvar en sådan här rest åt oss. 14Skulle vi då på nytt bryta mot dina bud och gifta in oss bland dessa folk som har sådana avskyvärda seder? Skulle du då inte bli så vred på oss att du utplånade oss, så att ingen blev kvar och överlevde? 15Du Herre, Israels Gud, du är rättfärdig. Ändå är vi nu kvar som en rest. Här är vi inför dig med vår skuld, även om ingen på grund av den kan bestå inför dig.
