6¶ Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him. 7For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?8.7 when…: or, how it shall be? 8There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.8.8 discharge: or, casting off weapons
9All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt. 10And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity. 11Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
12¶ Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him: 13But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.
14There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity. 15Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.
16¶ When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:) 17Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.

2Păzește porunca regelui, îți zic, din cauza jurământului încheiat cu Dumnezeu. 3Nu te grăbi să pleci dinaintea lui și nu căuta să susții un lucru rău, căci el face tot ce‑i place! 4De vreme ce cuvântul regelui are autoritate, cine îi poate spune: „Ce faci?“
5Pe cel ce‑i păzește porunca, nu‑l va atinge niciun rău,
iar inima înțeleptului cunoaște vremea potrivită și judecata,
6căci pentru fiecare lucru există un timp și o judecată,
deși nenorocirea omului este mare peste el.
7Într-adevăr, el nu știe ce se va întâmpla,
căci cine îi va spune cum va fi?
8Niciun om nu are stăpânire asupra vântului, ca să‑l oprească8 Sau: duhul, ca să‑l păstreze.,
și nimeni nu are putere asupra zilei morții.
Nimeni nu este scutit de la război,
și răutatea nu‑și poate scăpa stăpânii.
Cei răi și cei drepți
9Am văzut toate acestea și mi‑am îndreptat inima spre orice lucrare care este înfăptuită sub soare. Există un timp când un om are autoritate asupra altui om și‑i poate face rău.9 Sau: unui alt om, spre propria lui nenorocire. 10Apoi i‑am văzut pe cei răi îngropați – ei obișnuiau să vină și să plece de la Sfântul Lăcaș, fiind apoi lăudați în cetatea în care făceau astfel. Și aceasta este o deșertăciune!10 Sensul versetului este nesigur.
11Când sentința împotriva faptei rele nu se împlinește repede, inima fiilor oamenilor se umple de planuri ca să facă rău. 12Chiar dacă celui păcătos, deși face rău însutit, i se lungește viața, eu știu însă că celui ce se teme de Dumnezeu, celui ce stă temător înaintea Sa, îi va fi bine. 13Totuși, cel rău nu este fericit și nu‑și va lungi zilele, fiind precum umbra, pentru că nu se teme de Dumnezeu.
14Există o deșertăciune care are loc pe pământ, și anume: sunt oameni drepți peste care vine ceea ce merită cei răi și sunt oameni nedrepți peste care vine ceea ce merită cei drepți. Prin urmare, mi‑am zis că și aceasta este o deșertăciune. 15Atunci am lăudat veselia, căci nu este nimic mai plăcut omului sub soare decât să mănânce, să bea și să se bucure, iar bucuria îl va însoți în osteneala sa în toate zilele vieții sale, pe care le‑a primit de la Dumnezeu sub soare.
16Mi‑am îndemnat inima să cunosc înțelepciunea și să mă uit la munca care se face pe pământ; căci omul nu vede somn cu ochii lui nici ziua, nici noaptea. 17Și am văzut toată lucrarea lui Dumnezeu; într-adevăr, omul nu poate să cuprindă lucrarea care este înfăptuită sub soare. Oricât se străduiește omul să caute, tot nu va găsi; și chiar dacă înțeleptul spune că a ajuns să cunoască, el tot nu poate să găsească.
