1So when David was old and full of days, he made Solomon his son king over Israel.
2¶ And he gathered together all the princes of Israel, with the priests and the Levites. 3Now the Levites were numbered from the age of thirty years and upward: and their number by their polls, man by man, was thirty and eight thousand. 4Of which, twenty and four thousand were to set forward the work of the house of the LORD; and six thousand were officers and judges:23.4 set…: or, oversee 5Moreover four thousand were porters; and four thousand praised the LORD with the instruments which I made, said David, to praise therewith. 6And David divided them into courses among the sons of Levi, namely, Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.23.6 courses: Heb. divisions
7¶ Of the Gershonites were, Laadan, and Shimei.23.7 Laadan: or, Libni 8The sons of Laadan; the chief was Jehiel, and Zetham, and Joel, three. 9The sons of Shimei; Shelomith, and Haziel, and Haran, three. These were the chief of the fathers of Laadan. 10And the sons of Shimei were, Jahath, Zina, and Jeush, and Beriah. 12¶ The sons of Kohath; Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four. 13The sons of Amram; Aaron and Moses: and Aaron was separated, that he should sanctify the most holy things, he and his sons for ever, to burn incense before the LORD, to minister unto him, and to bless in his name for ever. 14Now concerning Moses the man of God, his sons were named of the tribe of Levi. 15The sons of Moses were, Gershom, and Eliezer. 16Of the sons of Gershom, Shebuel was the chief.23.16 Shebuel: also called, Shubael 17And the sons of Eliezer were, Rehabiah the chief. 21¶ The sons of Merari; Mahli, and Mushi. The sons of Mahli; Eleazar, and Kish. 22And Eleazar died, and had no sons, but daughters: and their brethren the sons of Kish took them.23.22 brethren: or, kinsmen 23The sons of Mushi; Mahli, and Eder, and Jeremoth, three.
24¶ These were the sons of Levi after the house of their fathers; even the chief of the fathers, as they were counted by number of names by their polls, that did the work for the service of the house of the LORD, from the age of twenty years and upward. 25For David said, The LORD God of Israel hath given rest unto his people, that they may dwell in Jerusalem for ever:23.25 that…: or, and he dwelleth in Jerusalem, etc 26And also unto the Levites; they shall no more carry the tabernacle, nor any vessels of it for the service thereof. 27For by the last words of David the Levites were numbered from twenty years old and above:23.27 numbered: Heb. number 28Because their office was to wait on the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of the LORD, in the courts, and in the chambers, and in the purifying of all holy things, and the work of the service of the house of God;23.28 their…: Heb. their station was at the hand of the sons of Aaron 29Both for the shewbread, and for the fine flour for meat offering, and for the unleavened cakes, and for that which is baked in the pan, and for that which is fried, and for all manner of measure and size;23.29 pan: or, flat plate 30And to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD, and likewise at even; 31And to offer all burnt sacrifices unto the LORD in the sabbaths, in the new moons, and on the set feasts, by number, according to the order commanded unto them, continually before the LORD: 32And that they should keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the charge of the holy place, and the charge of the sons of Aaron their brethren, in the service of the house of the LORD.
L’organisation des lévites
1Lorsque David fut âgé et rassasié de jours, il désigna son fils Salomon pour régner sur Israël23.1 Voir 1 R 1.1-40.. 2Il réunit tous les chefs d’Israël, ainsi que les prêtres et les lévites. 3A cette occasion, on dénombra les lévites âgés d’au moins trente ans : il y avait 38 000 hommes.
4– 24 000 d’entre eux auront la responsabilité des travaux du temple de l’Eternel, dit le roi, 6 000 seront administrateurs et juges, 54 000 seront portiers et 4 000 auront pour tâche de louer l’Eternel avec les instruments de musique que j’ai fait faire pour cet usage.
6David les répartit en trois classes selon les trois fils de Lévi : Guershôn, Qehath et Merari.
7Pour les Guershonites : Laedân et Shimeï. 8Laedân avait trois fils : le chef Yehiel, Zétam et Joël. 9Shimeï en avait aussi trois : Shelomith, Haziel et Harân. Ce sont là les chefs des groupes familiaux issus de Laedân.
10Shimeï eut quatre autres fils : Yahath, Ziza, Yeoush et Beria. 11Yahath était l’aîné et Ziza le second. Yeoush et Beria n’eurent pas beaucoup de descendants et furent comptés ensemble comme un seul groupe familial dans le dénombrement.
12Qehath eut quatre fils : Amram, Yitsehar, Hébron et Ouzziel. 13Fils d’Amram : Aaron et Moïse. Aaron fut mis à part, avec ses descendants à perpétuité, pour toujours se consacrer au service du lieu très saint, pour brûler les parfums devant l’Eternel, pour le servir et pour prononcer à perpétuité les bénédictions en son nom23.13 Voir Ex 28.1..
14Les descendants de Moïse, l’homme de Dieu, furent comptés, dans la tribu de Lévi. 15Fils de Moïse : Guershom, Eliézer. 16Le fils aîné de Guershom fut Shebouel. 17Eliézer n’eut qu’un fils, le chef Rehabia, mais les descendants de Rehabia furent très nombreux. 18Shelomith fut le premier des fils de Yitsehar. 19Fils de Hébron : Yeriya, l’aîné, Amaria, le deuxième, Yahaziel, le troisième, et Yeqameam, le quatrième. 20Les fils d’Ouzziel furent Michée, l’aîné, et Yishiya, le second.
21Fils de Merari : Mahli et Moushi. Fils de Mahli : Eléazar et Qish. 22Eléazar mourut sans avoir de fils ; il n’eut que des filles qui épousèrent des hommes qui leur étaient apparentés, les fils de Qish. 23Moushi eut trois fils : Mahli, Eder et Yerémoth.
24Tels furent les descendants de Lévi, selon leurs groupes familiaux et les chefs des groupes familiaux enregistrés un à un dans les listes nominatives lors du recensement. Ils étaient affectés au service du temple de l’Eternel depuis l’âge de vingt ans. 25David dit en effet : L’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël, a assuré une existence paisible à son peuple et il a établi pour toujours sa demeure à Jérusalem. 26Aussi, les lévites n’auront plus à transporter le tabernacle et tous les ustensiles destinés à son service.
27Ce fut d’après les dernières instructions de David qu’eut lieu le dénombrement des descendants de Lévi âgés d’au moins vingt ans. 28Leurs fonctions23.28 Pour les v. 28-32, voir Nb 3.5-9. consistaient en effet à assister les descendants d’Aaron dans le service du temple de l’Eternel. Ils avaient à surveiller l’entretien des parvis et des salles annexes, la purification de toutes les choses saintes et tout travail relatif au service du Temple. 29Ils devaient s’occuper des pains exposés devant l’Eternel23.29 Voir Lv 24.6-9. Ces pains devaient être disposés par rangées chaque sabbat., de la farine destinée aux offrandes végétales, des galettes sans levain et des gâteaux frits à la poêle ou bouillis, et de toutes les mesures de capacité et de longueur. 30D’autre part, ils étaient chargés de se présenter chaque matin et chaque soir pour célébrer et louer l’Eternel 31et pour offrir à l’Eternel tous les holocaustes les jours de repos, aux nouvelles lunes et aux fêtes cultuelles, devant l’Eternel, selon le nombre qui leur a été prescrit. 32Ils devaient assurer la garde de la tente de la Rencontre et celle du sanctuaire et assister leurs frères, les descendants d’Aaron, dans le service du temple de l’Eternel.
