1Then David said, This is the house of the LORD God, and this is the altar of the burnt offering for Israel. 2And David commanded to gather together the strangers that were in the land of Israel; and he set masons to hew wrought stones to build the house of God. 3And David prepared iron in abundance for the nails for the doors of the gates, and for the joinings; and brass in abundance without weight; 4Also cedar trees in abundance: for the Zidonians and they of Tyre brought much cedar wood to David. 5And David said, Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be builded for the LORD must be exceeding magnifical, of fame and of glory throughout all countries: I will therefore now make preparation for it. So David prepared abundantly before his death.
6¶ Then he called for Solomon his son, and charged him to build an house for the LORD God of Israel. 7And David said to Solomon, My son, as for me, it was in my mind to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God: 8But the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build an house unto my name, because thou hast shed much blood upon the earth in my sight. 9Behold, a son shall be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about: for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days.22.9 Solomon: that is, Peaceable 10He shall build an house for my name; and he shall be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever. 11Now, my son, the LORD be with thee; and prosper thou, and build the house of the LORD thy God, as he hath said of thee. 12Only the LORD give thee wisdom and understanding, and give thee charge concerning Israel, that thou mayest keep the law of the LORD thy God. 13Then shalt thou prosper, if thou takest heed to fulfil the statutes and judgments which the LORD charged Moses with concerning Israel: be strong, and of good courage; dread not, nor be dismayed. 14Now, behold, in my trouble I have prepared for the house of the LORD an hundred thousand talents of gold, and a thousand thousand talents of silver; and of brass and iron without weight; for it is in abundance: timber also and stone have I prepared; and thou mayest add thereto.22.14 trouble: or, poverty 15Moreover there are workmen with thee in abundance, hewers and workers of stone and timber, and all manner of cunning men for every manner of work.22.15 workers…: that is, masons and carpenters 16Of the gold, the silver, and the brass, and the iron, there is no number. Arise therefore, and be doing, and the LORD be with thee.
17¶ David also commanded all the princes of Israel to help Solomon his son, saying, 18Is not the LORD your God with you? and hath he not given you rest on every side? for he hath given the inhabitants of the land into mine hand; and the land is subdued before the LORD, and before his people. 19Now set your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God; arise therefore, and build ye the sanctuary of the LORD God, to bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and the holy vessels of God, into the house that is to be built to the name of the LORD.

Les préparatifs pour la construction du Temple
2Il ordonna de rassembler tous les étrangers établis en Israël22.2 Ces étrangers étaient les descendants des Cananéens qui avaient habité le pays avant la conquête par les Israélites (voir 2 Ch 2.16-17 ; 8.7-10). et il leur imposa la tâche d’extraire et de tailler des pierres en vue de la construction du temple de Dieu. 3David prépara aussi une grande quantité de fer destiné à la fabrication des clous et des charnières pour les battants des portes, ainsi qu’une masse incalculable de bronze 4et de bois de cèdre que les Sidoniens et les Tyriens lui fournissaient en abondance. 5Il se disait : Mon fils Salomon est encore jeune et inexpérimenté22.5 Salomon a accédé au pouvoir en 970 av. J.-C. ; il est né vers 991 av. J.-C. ; or, le temple qu’il s’agit de bâtir à l’Eternel devra être d’une grandeur, d’une splendeur et d’une gloire telles que sa renommée s’étendra dans tous les pays. Je vais donc commencer à faire des préparatifs pour lui. Ainsi David prépara beaucoup de matériaux de construction avant sa mort.
Salomon construira le Temple
6Puis il fit venir son fils Salomon et lui ordonna de construire un temple pour l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël.
7Il lui dit22.7 Pour les v. 7-10, voir 1 Ch 17.1-14 ; 2 S 7.1-16. : Mon fils, j’avais à cœur de bâtir moi-même un temple en l’honneur de l’Eternel, mon Dieu. 8Mais l’Eternel m’a parlé en ces termes : « Tu as fait couler beaucoup de sang, et tu as fait de grandes guerres. A cause de tout le sang que tu as répandu devant moi sur la terre, ce n’est pas toi qui bâtiras un temple en mon honneur. 9Mais il te naîtra un fils qui sera un homme de paix : je lui assurerai la paix avec tous ses ennemis d’alentour ; il s’appellera Salomon (le Pacifique) et, durant toute sa vie, j’accorderai la paix et la tranquillité à Israël. 10Ce sera lui qui bâtira un temple en mon honneur. Il sera pour moi un fils et je serai pour lui un père ; je maintiendrai pour toujours le trône de sa royauté sur Israël. »
11Maintenant, mon fils, que l’Eternel soit avec toi, afin que tu réussisses à bâtir le temple de l’Eternel, ton Dieu, comme il l’a dit à ton sujet. 12Oh ! que l’Eternel t’accorde de la sagesse et de l’intelligence pour obéir à la Loi de l’Eternel ton Dieu lorsqu’il t’établira sur Israël ! 13Oui, tu réussiras, si tu veilles à obéir aux ordonnances et aux lois que l’Eternel a prescrites à Moïse pour Israël. Prends courage et tiens bon, ne crains rien et ne te laisse pas effrayer22.13 Voir Dt 31.7-8 ; Jos 1.6-9. !
14Vois, à force de peine, j’ai préparé pour le temple de l’Eternel plus de 3 000 tonnes d’or et 30 000 tonnes d’argent, ainsi qu’une quantité incalculable de bronze et de fer. J’ai aussi préparé du bois et des pierres, et tu en ajouteras encore. 15Tu as auprès de toi suffisamment d’ouvriers, des tailleurs de pierres, des sculpteurs sur bois et sur pierre et des artisans experts pour tous les travaux. 16Tu disposes d’une quantité incalculable d’or, d’argent, de bronze et de fer. Mets-toi donc à l’ouvrage et que l’Eternel soit avec toi !
17Puis David ordonna à tous les chefs d’Israël de prêter leur concours à son fils Salomon.
18– L’Eternel, votre Dieu, leur dit-il, est manifestement avec vous : il vous assure la paix sur toutes vos frontières. En effet, il a mis sous ma coupe les anciens habitants du pays, et maintenant le pays est soumis devant l’Eternel et devant son peuple. 19A présent, appliquez-vous donc de tout votre cœur et de tout votre être à vous attacher à l’Eternel votre Dieu ! Mettez-vous au travail et bâtissez le sanctuaire de l’Eternel Dieu, afin d’installer le coffre de l’alliance de l’Eternel et les objets du sanctuaire22.19 Autre traduction : les objets sacrés. de Dieu dans le temple qui doit être construit en l’honneur de l’Eternel22.19 Le coffre de l’alliance se trouvait encore sous une tente sur la colline de Sion (16.1). !
