ペテロとヨハネの逮捕
1二人が話しているところへ、祭司たちや神殿の警備隊長、それにサドカイ人（神殿を支配していた祭司階級。ユダヤ教の主流派）たちが来ました。 2聞いてみると、二人は堂々と、イエスが死者の中から復活したと話しています。これはまずいと思った彼らは、 3二人を逮捕しましたが、もう夕方だったので、一晩、留置場に入れておくことにしました。 4しかし、二人の話を聞いた人たちが大ぜい信じ、信者の数は、男だけで五千人に上りました。
5翌日、ユダヤ人の指導者たちの会議が、エルサレムで開かれました。 6大祭司アンナス、カヤパ、ヨハネ、アレキサンデル、そのほか大祭司の一族もみな顔をそろえています。 7ペテロとヨハネは一同の前に引き出され、尋問が行われました。「おまえたちは、何の力で、また、だれの権威でこんなことをしたのか。」
8その時、ペテロは聖霊に満たされ、落ち着きはらって答えました。「わが国の名誉ある指導者、ならびに長老の方々。 9お尋ねの件は、あの足の悪い男のことで、どのようにして彼が治ったかということでしょうか。 10そのことなら、あなたがた、いやイスラエルのすべての人たちに、はっきりお話ししたいのです。この出来事は、あなたがたが十字架につけ、神様が復活させてくださった、あのメシヤ（救い主）、ナザレのイエスの名と力とによるのです。 11メシヤのイエスは、まさに『建築士たちの捨てた石が、最も重要な土台石になった』（詩篇118・22）と聖書にある、その石なのです。 12この方以外には、だれによっても救われません。天下に、人がその名を呼んで救われる名は、ほかにないのです。」
13あまりにも大胆なペテロとヨハネのことばに、議員たちは驚き、たじたじとなりました。二人は明らかに、教育も受けていなければ、宗教の専門家でもないのです。とうとう、イエスといっしょにいたからそうなったのだ、と認めないわけにはいかなくなりました。 14その上、実際に足の治った当の男が二人のそばに立っていたのでは、その事実を否定することもできません。 15しかたなく彼らは、二人を退場させ、自分たちだけで協議しました。
16「さて、彼らをどうしよう。たいへんな奇跡を行ったという事実は、どうにも否定のしようがない。なにしろ、エルサレム中の者たちが知っているのだから……。 17だが、これ以上の宣伝活動はやめさせなければならない。今後イエスのことを人前で語ったら、ただではすまないぞと脅してやろう。」 18話が決まったところでもう一度二人を呼び入れ、今後いっさいイエスのことを話してはならないと、きつく言い渡しました。
19しかし、ペテロとヨハネは、きっぱり答えました。「神にではなく、あなたがたに従うことを、神様が望んでおられるとでもお考えなのですか。 20私たちは、イエスの行われたことやお話しになったことを、知らせないわけにはいきません。」
21議員たちはなおもしつこく脅しましたが、効き目はありません。かといって二人を罰しようものなら、暴動が起きかねないと考え、ついにあきらめて釈放しました。人々がみな、すばらしい奇跡を見て、神をほめたたえていたからです。 22なにしろ、四十年も立てなかった人が完全に治ったのですから、むりもありません。
23晴れて自由の身になると、ペテロとヨハネはすぐほかの弟子たちのところへ帰り、議員たちの言ったことを残らず伝えました。
祈りと賛美にあふれる教会
24これを聞いた信者たちはみな、心を一つにして祈りました。「ああ、天と地と海と、その中にあるすべてのものを造られた主よ。 25-26あなたは、はるか昔、あなたのしもべである先祖ダビデの口を通し、聖霊によって、こう語られました。
『なぜ異教徒どもは主に怒りを燃やし、
愚かな国々は全能の神に、むだな抵抗をするのか。
地上の王たちは一つとなり、
神とキリストに戦いをしかける。』（詩篇2・1-2）
27まさに、この預言どおりのことが、今エルサレムで起こっています。ヘロデ王と総督ピラト、それにローマ人たちが、イスラエルの民と手を組み、あなたが油を注いだ聖なるしもべイエスに反逆しました。 28何もかも、あなたのお考えのとおりです。彼らのやっていることは一つ残らず、知恵ある力によって、あなたが行わせているのです。 29ああ主よ、どうか今、彼らの脅しを聞かれ、私たちが忠実に、しかも大胆に、あなたの教えを語れるように、私たちをお守りください。 30私たちに病気をいやす力を与え、あなたの聖なるしもべイエスの名によって、奇跡を行わせてください。」
31こう祈った時、集まっていた家が激しく揺れ動き、一同はたちまち聖霊に満たされて、大胆に神の教えを語り始めました。
持ち物をささげる
32さて、イエスを信じた人たちは、心と思いを一つにし、だれ一人財産を惜しむ者がなく、すべてのものを平等に分け合っていました。 33使徒たちは主イエスの復活を力強く語り、すべての者の上に恵みがありました。 34-35土地や家を持っている者はそれを売り払い、代金を使徒たちのところに持って来ました。そのお金は必要に応じてみんなに分配されたので、貧しい者は一人もいませんでした。
36キプロス島出身で、レビ人のヨセフもその一人です。彼はバルナバ〔慰めの子〕と呼ばれていましたが、 37畑を売った代金を、「困っている人たちに」と言って、使徒たちのところへ持って来ました。
1And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them, 2Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day: for it was now eventide. 4Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand.
5¶ And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes, 6And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. 7And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this? 8Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, 9If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole; 10Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. 11This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. 12Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
13¶ Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. 14And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. 15But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, 16Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it. 17But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name. 18And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. 19But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. 20For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard. 21So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done. 22For the man was above forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was shewed.
23¶ And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them. 24And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is: 25Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? 26The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. 27For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, 28For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. 29And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, 30By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.
31¶ And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. 32And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. 33And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. 34Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, 35And laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need. 36And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus, 37Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
