神の子どもとされた私たち
1天の父は、どんなに私たちを愛しておられることでしょう。私たちを、ご自分の子どもとして受け入れてくださったほどです。考えてもごらんなさい。神の子どもとされたのです。ところが、神を知らない多くの人は、当然、私たちが神の子どもであることを理解できません。 2愛する人たち。私たちは、もうすでに神の子どもなのです。これから先のことは想像もつきませんが、ただこの一事だけはわかっています。つまり、キリストが再び来られる時、私たちはキリストに似た者となるということです。その時、キリストのありのままの姿を見るからです。
3このことをほんとうに信じる人はみな、自分の身を、いつもきよく保とうと心がけます。キリストはきよいお方だからです。
4罪を犯し続ける人は、神に逆らっているのです。罪はすべて、神のお心に反する行為だからです。 5あなたがたは、キリストが人間となられたのは、私たちの罪を取り除くためであったことをよく知っています。また、キリストは何の罪も犯さず、どんな時にも、神のお心からそれなかったことも知っているはずです。 6ですから、もし私たちが、いつもキリストのそば近くにおり、従順に従うなら、罪を犯し続けたりしないですみます。罪を犯す人々は、真の意味でキリストを知らず、キリストのものとなっていないからです。 7愛する子どもたち。このことで、だれにも惑わされてはいけません。もし、あなたがたがいつも善を行っているなら、キリストと同じように正しく歩んでいるのです。
8しかし、もし依然として罪を犯し続けるなら、それは悪魔の子になり下がった証拠です。悪魔は、初めの罪以来、ずっと罪を重ねてきました。神の御子は、この悪魔のしわざを打ち破るために来られたのです。 9神の家族の一員として新しく生まれた人には、神のいのちが宿っているので、もはや罪を犯す習慣はありません。新しいいのちに支配されているので、罪を犯し続けることができないのです。その人は神によってもう一度生まれたのです。
口先ではない真実の愛
10そこで今、私たちは、神の子どもと悪魔の子どもとを、はっきり見分けることができます。罪の生活を送り、兄弟であるクリスチャンを愛さない者は、自分から神の家族ではないと証明しているようなものです。 11私たちは初めから、「互いに愛し合いなさい」と教えられてきたからです。 12カインのようになってはいけません。カインは悪魔の子どもになって、弟を殺しました（創世4章）。弟の正しい生活と比べて、自分の生活があまりにも悪いと自覚していたからです。
13ですから、皆さん。たとえ全世界があなたがたを憎んでも、驚いてはいけません。 14ほかの兄弟（信仰を同じくする者）を愛しているなら、自分が霊の死から救われ、いのちを与えられたことを確信できます。そうでない者は、その死にとどまっているのです。 15だれでも兄弟を憎む者は、心の中で人殺しをしているのです。言うまでもないことですが、人殺しをする者に永遠のいのちはありません。
16キリストは、私たちのために進んでいのちを捨ててくださいました。そのことによって、私たちは愛を知ったのです。ですから、私たちも兄弟のために、いのちを捨てるべきです。 17自分ではぜいたくに暮らしていながら、困っている兄弟がいても、見て見ぬふりをするとしたらどうでしょう。どうして、その人に神の愛があると言えるでしょう。 18子どもたちよ。口先だけで人を愛するのではなく、真実をこめて愛し、実践によって神の愛を示そうではありませんか。
19そうすれば、自分が神の側に立っていることを強く確信し、主の前に平安があるのです。 20たとえ心に責められることがあってもです。 21しかし、愛する人たち。もし私たちの良心が潔白であれば、完全な確信と信頼を持って主の前に出ることができます。 22また、願い求めるものは何でもいただけるのです。なぜなら、私たちは主に従い、主に喜ばれる行いをしているからです。 23神の命令には、喜んで従わなければなりません。つまり、御子イエス・キリストの名を信じ、互いに愛し合わなければなりません。 24神の命令に喜んで従う人は、神と共にいるのです。そして、神もその人のそばにいてくださるのです。これは、神が私たちに与えてくださった聖霊によって教えられることです。
1See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears,3:2 Or when it is made known we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
4Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. 5But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. 6No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.
7Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 9No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.

11For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous. 13Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters,3:13 The Greek word for brothers and sisters (adelphoi) refers here to believers, both men and women, as part of God’s family; also in verse 16. if the world hates you. 14We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.
16This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
19This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: 20If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him. 23And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. 24The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.
