1私の子どもたちよ。私がこう言うのも、あなたがたにいつも罪から離れていてほしいからです。しかし、もし罪を犯したとしても、父なる神の前で弁護してくださるイエス・キリストがおられます。キリストはすべての点で正しく、神のお心に完全にかなった方です。 2そして、私たちの罪ばかりでなく、全世界の罪に対する神の怒りを一身に引き受け、神との関係を回復させてくださいました。
信仰を確かめる方法
3私たちが神に属していることを、どうすれば確かめられるでしょう。それは、神の命令を守っているかどうかです。 4ある人が、「私はクリスチャンだ。キリストを知っている」と言っても、もしその人がキリストの命令に従っていなければ、うそをついているのです。 5キリストのみことばを実行している人は、ますます神を愛します。それによって、キリストにつながっている人であるかどうかがわかります。
6自分はクリスチャンだと言う人は、キリストと同じ生き方をすべきです。
7愛する人たち。私は今、新しい戒め（神のおきて）をつくり出しているのではありません。これは、初めからある古い戒めであり、すでに何度も聞いているみことばです。 8しかしこの戒めは、古くて常に新しいのです。キリストにおいても、あなたがたにとっても真理なのです。「互いに愛し合いなさい」という戒めを守る時、私たちの生活から暗闇は消え去り、新しいいのちの光が輝きます。
9キリストの光の中を歩んでいると言いながら、兄弟（信仰を同じくする者）を憎む人は、相変わらず暗闇の中にいるのです。 10兄弟を愛する人は光の中を歩む者であり、つまずくことはありません。 11しかし兄弟を憎む人は、暗闇の中をあてどなくさまよい、自分の行く先もわからない者です。暗闇のために、足もとさえよく見えないのです。
12子どもたちよ。このように書き送るのは、あなたがたの罪が、すでに救い主イエスの名によって赦されているからです。 13年長者たちよ。私がこう書き送るのは、あなたがたが、世の初めから生きておられるキリストを知っているからです。青年たちよ。私がこう語りかけるのは、あなたがたが悪魔との戦いに勝ったからです。少年たちよ。私がこう書き送るのは、あなたがたが父なる神を知ったからです。 14私があなたがたにこう語るのは、あなたがたが強い者であり、神のことばがそのうちにとどまり、悪魔との戦いに打ち勝ったからです。
この世を愛してはいけない
15この世と、この世のすべてのものに、心を奪われてはなりません。もし、それらを愛するなら、神を愛していないのです。 16すべての世に属するもの――罪の性質から起こる欲望、性的な欲望、暮らし向きの虚栄心――は、神から出たものではなく、みな、この世の生み出したものです。 17この世は、やがて滅び去ります。同時に、これらの禁じられた欲望も消滅します。しかし、常に神に従って歩む者は永遠に生きるのです。
18愛する子どもたちよ。この世の終わりが近づいています。すでに耳にしていたとおり、今や多くの反キリスト（キリストに敵対する者）が現れました。このことからも、終末の近いことは確かです。 19キリストに敵対する者たちは、これまでずっと私たちの教会員のふりをしていましたが、ほんとうの仲間ではなかったのです。そうでなければ、教会にとどまり続けたはずです。彼らが出て行った時、私たちの仲間でなかったことが証明されたのです。 20しかし、あなたがたは違います。あなたがたは聖霊が与えられて、すでに真理を知る者となっています。 21ですから私は、あなたがたに真理を知らせなくてはならないと考えて、この手紙を書いているわけではありません。本物と偽物との区別ができる者となるよう注意を促しているのです。
22では、一番のうそつきとはだれでしょう。イエスはキリスト（救い主）ではないと言う者、反キリストです。父なる神と神の子とを信じない者、それが反キリストです。 23神の子キリストを信じない人は、父なる神を自分の父とすることができません。しかし、信じる人は、父なる神を自分の父とできるのです。 24ですからあなたがたは、初めから教えられてきたことを信じ続けなさい。そうすれば、父なる神や神の子と、共にいることができるのです。 25これこそ、キリストから与えられた約束であり、永遠のいのちです。
26これまで、私が反キリストについて注意を促してきたのは、あなたがたの目をごまかし、まちがった教えに引きずり込もうとたくらむ者に、だまされてほしくないからです。
27しかし、あなたがたは聖霊をいただいています。聖霊が心のうちに生きておられます。ですから、何が正しいかを判断するのに、だれからも教えてもらう必要はありません。聖霊がすべてを指示してくださるからです。聖霊は真理であって、決して偽りを教えません。あなたがたは、聖霊の指示に従ってキリストのうちに生きるべきで、絶対に離れ出てはいけないのです。 28そこで、私の子どもたちよ。いつも、主との親しい関係を保ちなさい。そうすれば、キリストが帰って来られる時、主にお会いするのをためらったり、恥じたりしないですむでしょう。
29私たちは、神が正しい方であり、正しいことだけを行われると知っています。ですから、正しい行いをする者はみな、神の子どもだと判断できるのです。
1My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
Love and Hatred for Fellow Believers
3We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5But if anyone obeys his word, love for God2:5 Or word, God’s love is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.
7Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. 8Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.

They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.
Reasons for Writing
12I am writing to you, dear children,
because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.
13I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young men,
because you have overcome the evil one.
14I write to you, dear children,
because you know the Father.
I write to you, fathers,

because you are strong,
and the word of God lives in you,
and you have overcome the evil one.
On Not Loving the World
15Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father2:15 Or world, the Father’s love is not in them. 16For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
Warnings Against Denying the Son
18Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. 19They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.
20But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.2:20 Some manuscripts and you know all things 21I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth. 22Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son. 23No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.
24As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25And this is what he promised us—eternal life.
26I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. 27As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.
God’s Children and Sin
28And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.
29If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.
