セナケリブ、エルサレムを脅かす
1ヒゼキヤ王の治世の第十四年に、アッシリヤの王セナケリブがユダの要塞化された町々を残らず占領しました。 2それからだいぶたってからのことです。王はラキシュから大軍をつけて使者を送り、エルサレムのヒゼキヤ王と交渉させました。使者の一行は、布さらしの野を通る道のほとりの、上の貯水池の出口近くに陣を張りました。 3ヒルキヤの子でイスラエルの首相のエルヤキム、王の書記官シェブナ、それにアサフの子で王の秘書官のヨアフが休戦交渉の委員となり、彼らに会いに出かけました。 4使者は、次のようなヒゼキヤ王への伝言を突きつけました。
「アッシリヤの大王は、エジプトのファラオの助けをあてにするのは愚か者だと仰せになっている。 5ファラオの約束など、ぼろきれ同然だ。口先だけでは勝てない。それなのに、おまえは彼の助けをあてにし、私に手向かった。 6エジプトは危険な同盟軍だ。何をしでかすかわかったものじゃない。寄りかかってきたら手を刺してやろうと、杖の先をとがらせて待っている。忘れるな、今までこの国に助けを求めた者は、例外なくひどい目に会ったのだぞ。 7ひょっとしたらおまえは、『われわれは神にお頼りしている』と殊勝なことを言うかもしれない。だが、よく考えてみろ。その神にしてからが、ヒゼキヤ王が丘の上の神殿や祭壇を片っ端から壊したあげく、ユダの民に、エルサレムの祭壇の前でだけ拝めと命じた、あの神ではないか。 8-9わが主君、アッシリヤの大王は、ちょっとした賭けをしたいと言っておられる。どうかな、そちらの兵は二千とは残っていまい。もし残っていたら、大王は二千頭の馬をくれてやろうとおっしゃる。それで編成した、吹けば飛ぶような軍隊では、わが軍の一番弱い部隊ですら撃退できまい。エジプトの助けなどあてにならないからだ。 10それだけではない。そもそも、ここまでわざわざ出かけて来たのも、主がこの国を占領せよと言ったからだ。『さあ、行って、ユダを滅ぼせ。』そう、神は言ったのだ。」
11これを聞いたエルヤキムとシェブナ、それにヨアフは、使者に頼みました。「私どもはアラム語（当時の国際共通語）がよくわかります。どうか、ヘブル語でなくアラム語で話してください。城壁の上にいる者たちに聞かれたくありませんので……。」 12ところが、相手はますます居丈高に答えました。「大王は、おまえたちだけでなくエルサレム中の者に知らせたいと思っておられるのだ。おまえたちが降伏しなければ、この都はすっかり包囲され、だれもが飢えと渇きに我慢できなくなって、自分の糞を食べ、自分の尿を飲むようになることを知らせたいと。」
13こう言うと、城壁の上で聞き耳を立てているユダヤ人たちに、大声でどなりました。「アッシリヤの大王のおことばを、よおく聞け。大王はこう仰せだ。 14『ヒゼキヤにだまされるな。彼がどんなにもがいても、おまえたちを救えない。 15神を信じろ、神がついていれば、アッシリヤ王に征服されることはないと言われても、耳を貸すな。 16ヒゼキヤの言うことを聞くな。大王はすばらしい条件を出しておられる。さあ、降伏のしるしに貢ぎ物を出せ。門を開けて出て来い。そうすれば、もれなく畑と庭と飲み水を与え、 17いずれ、こことよく似た国へ連れて行ってやろう。穀物もぶどうもよく取れる、豊かな国だ。 18気休めにすぎないヒゼキヤのことばにつられて、こんなすばらしい特権をふいにするな。これまでに、大王の無敵の軍隊を負かした神々がいたか。 19ハマテやアルパデがどんな目に会ったか覚えているだろう。彼らの神々は彼らを救ったか。セファルワイムとサマリヤの場合はどうだ。今、彼らの神々はどこにいる。 20これらの国々の神が、私の手から人々を救い出したか。そんな例があったら、その神の名を挙げてみろ。なのに、おまえたちの神に限ってエルサレムを救えるとでも考えているのか。頭を冷やして、よく考えてみることだ。』」
21人々は押し黙ってひと言も答えません。ヒゼキヤがそう命じておいたからです。 22首相のエルヤキム、王の書記官シェブナ、それに王の秘書官ヨアフは、絶望のしるしに、着ている服をずたずたに裂き、ヒゼキヤのところへ帰って一部始終を報告しました。
1Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah, and took them. 2And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller’s field. 3Then came forth unto him Eliakim, Hilkiah’s son, which was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph’s son, the recorder.36.3 scribe: or, secretary
4¶ And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest? 5I say, sayest thou, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?36.5 vain…: Heb. a word of lips36.5 I have…: or, but counsel and strength are for the war 6Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him. 7But if thou say to me, We trust in the LORD our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar? 8Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.36.8 pledges: or, hostages 9How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? 10And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? the LORD said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
11¶ Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews’ language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
12¶ But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you? 13Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria. 14Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you. 15Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria. 16Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;36.16 Make…: or, Seek my favour by a present: Heb. Make with me a blessing 17Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards. 18Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? 19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? 20Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand? 21But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
22¶ Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
