エルサレム解放の預言
1王は会談の結果を聞いて王服を裂き、屈辱と嘆きを示して、目のあらい布を身にまといました。それから、祈るために神殿に行きました。 2一方、首相のエルヤキム、王の書記官シェブナ、それに年長の祭司たちにも同じような格好をさせ、アモツの子である預言者イザヤのところへ行かせたのです。 3彼らは王のことづけを伝えました。「今日は苦しみと懲らしめと侮辱の日です。女が子を産もうとしてひどく苦しんでいるのに、なかなか産み落とせないような日です。 4-5おそらくあなたの神である主は、アッシリヤの王の使者の、あの聞くに耐えないののしりをお聞きになったと思います。神がこのままで済ますはずはありません。あんな暴言を吐いたやつを責めるでしょう。お願いですから、ここに残っているわれわれのために祈ってください。」
6「わかりました。王様に神のおことばを取り次ぎなさい。アッシリヤの王の家来の脅しと暴言で取り乱してはいけない。 7アッシリヤから王のもとへ、帰国しなければならない急な知らせが届く。王は国へ帰り、そこで殺される。すべてわたしが手はずを整えたのだ。」
8-9アッシリヤの使者はエルサレムを離れ、ラキシュに続いてリブナを攻撃中の王と相談するため道を急ぎました。ところが、アッシリヤの王はちょうどこの時、エチオピヤの皇太子ティルハカが軍隊を率いて向かって来るとの知らせを受けたのです。これを聞くと、もう一度エルサレムへ使いをやり、ヒゼキヤに手紙を渡しました。 10「おまえは、エルサレムは私の手に渡さないとか、偉そうな口をたたいておるが、おまえの信じている神にごまかされるな。 11私の行く先々でどんなことが起こったかを思い出せ。刃向かう者は手当たりしだいに押しつぶしてきた。自分だけは例外だと思うのか。 12ゴザン、カラン、レツェフの町々、それにテラサルにいるエデンの住民が神々に救い出されたか。とんでもない！ 彼らは皆殺しにされた。 13ハマテの王、アルパデの王、セファルワイム、ヘナ、イワの町々の王の最期がどうであったか、忘れないことだ。」
ヒゼキヤの祈り
14ヒゼキヤ王はこの手紙を読み終えると、すぐさま神殿に駆けつけ、主の前に手紙を広げ、 15こう祈りました。 16-17「天の軍勢の主、ケルビム（契約の箱を守る天使の像）の上におられるイスラエルの神よ。あなただけが世界でただひとりの神です。あなただけが天と地をお造りになりました。どうか今、私の願いをお聞きください。祈っている私に目を留めてください。ごらんください。これがセナケリブ王の手紙です。王は生きておられる神をあざけりました。 18手紙にもあるように、王が国々を滅ぼしたのは事実です。 19そして国々の神を火に投げ入れました。みな神とは名ばかりで、人間が木や石で造った偶像にすぎませんが。だからアッシリヤ人は、難なくこれらの神々の息の根を止めることができたのです。 20ああ神よ、世界中の国が、あなただけが神であることを知るためにも、どうか私たちをお救いください。」
セナケリブの敗北
21その時、アモツの子イザヤは使いをやり、ヒゼキヤ王にことづけを伝えました。「イスラエルの神、主のお告げがありました。主は、あなたがアッシリヤの王セナケリブのことで祈るのを、お聞きになりました。 22彼についてのお告げはこうです。
よるべのないシオンの処女の娘であるわたしの民は、おまえを軽蔑し、笑い者にし、さげすんで頭を振る。
23おまえがののしり、あざけった相手はだれか。
おまえはだれに毒づいたのか。
だれに高ぶり、言ってはならぬことを口にしたのか。
イスラエルの聖なる神、わたしにではないか。
24おまえは使いをよこして、わたしをあざけった。
そして得意になって語った。
『私は強力な軍勢を引き連れ、西の国々を攻めた。
そびえるレバノン杉と良質の糸杉を切り倒した。
高い山々を征服し、密林を踏みにじった』と。
25おまえは、征服した地に多くの井戸を掘ったことを自慢している。
エジプトが全軍をあげてかかっても、おまえには歯が立たない。
26だが、こうなるように昔から決めていたのは、このわたしだ。
まだそのことに気づかないのか。
大昔からこのような力を与えておいたのは、わたしだったのだ。
おまえが城壁に囲まれた町々を瓦礫の山にしたのは、わたしの計画で実現させたのだ。
27だからこそ、おまえが攻めた国々の住民は弱く、やすやすと餌食になったのだ。
彼らは草のように無力で、容易に踏みにじられる新芽のようにもろく、屋根の草のように、太陽に当たると黄色くしなびた。
28わたしはおまえをよく知っている。
あらゆる行動が手に取るようにわかる。
わたしに向かっていきりたったのも知っている。
29神にいどみかかるとは何事だ。
わたしは暴言を全部聞いた。
もう黙ってはいない。
おまえの鼻に鉤をかけ、口にはくつわをはめて、もと来た道を引き返させる。」
30続いて神は、ヒゼキヤに言いました。
「この都をアッシリヤの王から救い出すのはわたしであるという証拠を見せよう。
今年、彼は包囲を解く。
種をまくには遅すぎるので、今年の秋は落ち穂から生えたもので我慢しなければならない。
だが来年は、まずまずのところまで持ち直し、二年先には、以前のように豊かな暮らしができる。
31ユダにいるあなたがたはまた自分の土地に住み、繁栄し、増え広がる。
32生き残った者がエルサレムを出て再び定住するからだ。
わたしが、これらのことをみな実現する。
33アッシリヤ軍はエルサレムに侵入しない。
矢を放ち、城門の外に迫り、城壁沿いにとりでを築くこともしない。
34もと来た道を引き返す。
この都に入ることは絶対にない。
35わたしの名誉にかけて、また、わたしの忠実なしもべダビデのためにも必ずここを守る。」
36その夜、主の使いがアッシリヤ軍の陣営に出て行って、十八万五千人の兵士を打ちました。翌朝、何も知らずに目を覚ました者たちの前には死体が累々と横たわっていました。 37アッシリヤの王セナケリブは、自分の国のニネベへ逃げ帰りました。 38そののち、彼が守護神ニスロクの神殿で拝んでいた時、息子のアデラメレクとサルエツェルが、いきなり剣を抜いて切りかかって彼を殺しました。二人はアララテの地へ逃げました。こうして、別の息子エサル・ハドンが王になったのです。
1And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD. 2And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz. 3And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.37.3 blasphemy: or, provocation 4It may be the LORD thy God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is left.37.4 left: Heb. found 5So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.
6¶ And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. 7Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.37.7 send…: or, put a spirit into him
8¶ So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish. 9And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He is come forth to make war with thee. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, 10Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God, in whom thou trustest, deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. 11Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly; and shalt thou be delivered? 12Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Telassar? 13Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?
14¶ And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD. 15And Hezekiah prayed unto the LORD, saying, 16O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth. 17Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God. 18Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries,37.18 nations: Heb. lands 19And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.37.19 cast: Heb. given 20Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.
21¶ Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria: 22This is the word which the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin, the daughter of Zion, hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee. 23Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel. 24By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the height of his border, and the forest of his Carmel.37.24 By thy…: Heb. 37¶ So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. 38And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esar-haddon his son reigned in his stead.37.38 Armenia: Heb.
