2Luister naar mij, o God,
als ik met mijn zorgen bij U kom.
Bescherm mijn leven
tegen de aanvallen van de vijand.
3Verberg mij
als de misdadigers iets tegen mij beramen,
als de zondaars het op mij gemunt hebben.
4Zij scherpen hun tong alsof het een zwaard is
en schieten hun boosaardige taal als pijlen op mij af.
5Vanuit hun schuilplaats schieten zij op onschuldigen.
Niets en niemand ontzien zij.
6Zij wagen het kwade dingen te doen
en spreken er zelfs over valstrikken te zetten.
Zij denken dat niemand hen ziet.
7Zij zijn op slechte dingen uit en zeggen:
‘Nu is het zover, het plan is goed doordacht.’
Ja, het hart van de mens is ondoorgrondelijk.
8Maar God kan hen onverwacht treffen.
Als Hij een pijl afschiet,
is het altijd raak, zij zijn gewond.
9Zij struikelen over hun eigen woorden.
Wie hen ziet, schudt misprijzend het hoofd.
10Dan zullen alle mensen ontzag hebben
voor God en voor alles wat Hij doet.
Met ontzag zien zij op naar zijn werk.
11De oprechte mens verheugt zich in de Here
en vindt bij Hem bescherming.
Alle eerlijke mensen beroemen zich op Hem.

For the director of music. A psalm of David.
1Hear me, my God, as I voice my complaint;
protect my life from the threat of the enemy.
2Hide me from the conspiracy of the wicked,
from the plots of evildoers.
3They sharpen their tongues like swords
and aim cruel words like deadly arrows.
4They shoot from ambush at the innocent;
they shoot suddenly, without fear.
5They encourage each other in evil plans,
they talk about hiding their snares;
they say, “Who will see it64:5 Or us?”
6They plot injustice and say,
“We have devised a perfect plan!”
Surely the human mind and heart are cunning.
7But God will shoot them with his arrows;
they will suddenly be struck down.
8He will turn their own tongues against them
and bring them to ruin;
all who see them will shake their heads in scorn.
9All people will fear;
they will proclaim the works of God
and ponder what he has done.
10The righteous will rejoice in the Lord
and take refuge in him;
all the upright in heart will glory in him!
