Het altaar door Asa herbouwd
1De Geest van God kwam over Azarja, de zoon van Oded, 2en hij ging koning Asa tegemoet, die juist terugkeerde van de succesvolle veldtocht. ‘Luister naar mij, Asa! Luister, legers van Juda en Benjamin!’ riep hij. ‘De Here blijft bij u, zolang u bij Hem blijft. Als u Hem zoekt, zult u Hem ook vinden. Maar als u Hem de rug toekeert, zal Hij u in de steek laten. 3Al lange tijd hebben de inwoners van Israël de ware God niet meer aanbeden en hebben zij geen echte priesters gehad om hen te onderwijzen. Zij hebben zonder Gods wetten geleefd. 4Maar elke keer dat zij zich in moeilijke situaties tot de Here, de God van Israël, wendden, kwam Hij hen te hulp. 5In de tijd dat zij opstandig waren tegenover God, kon niemand veilig van de ene plaats naar de andere reizen. Er heerste paniek en chaos onder de mensen. 6Zij voerden oorlogen met andere landen en binnenlandse twisten tussen steden verscheurden het land, doordat de Here hen trof met allerlei rampen. 7Maar u, mannen van Juda, u moet het goede blijven doen en niet ontmoedigd raken, want er wacht u een beloning voor al uw inspanning.’
8Nadat koning Asa deze profetie van Azarja had gehoord, vatte hij moed en verwoestte alle afgodsbeelden in Juda en Benjamin en in de steden in het heuvelland van Efraïm die hij had veroverd. Tevens herstelde hij het altaar van de Here voor de tempel. 9Toen riep hij alle inwoners van Juda en Benjamin en de immigranten uit Israël bijeen. Velen waren uit de gebieden van Efraïm, Manasse en Simeon naar Juda gekomen, toen zij zagen dat de Here aan de kant van koning Asa stond. 10In de derde maand van het vijftiende regeringsjaar van koning Asa kwamen zij in groten getale naar Jeruzalem 11en offerden daar zevenhonderd ossen en zevenduizend schapen aan de Here. De dieren waren een deel van de oorlogsbuit. 12Daarna beloofden zij plechtig in een verbond dat zij voortaan alleen de Here, de God van hun voorouders, met hart en ziel zouden dienen. 13Ieder die dat weigerde moest sterven, oud of jong, man of vrouw. 14Zij riepen met luide stem hun eed van trouw uit naar God, begeleid door trompetten en bazuinen. 15Iedereen was blij met deze eed tegenover God die ze uit de grond van hun hart hadden afgelegd. Zij wilden de Here boven alles zoeken en zij vonden Hem ook. En Hij gaf vrede door het hele land.
16Koning Asa zette zelfs zijn moeder Maächa af als koningin-moeder, omdat zij een beeld van Asjéra had gemaakt, hij sloeg het beeld kapot en verbrandde de brokstukken bij de beek de Kidron. 17In Israël werden de heidense tempels echter niet verwijderd. Maar hier in Juda en Benjamin was het hart van koning Asa zijn hele leven volkomen op God gericht. 18De zilveren en gouden schalen die hij en zijn vader aan de Here hadden gewijd, bracht hij terug naar de tempel. 19Zo werd er tot het vijfendertigste regeringsjaar van koning Asa geen oorlog meer gevoerd.
Asa’s reform
1The Spirit of God came on Azariah son of Oded. 2He went out to meet Asa and said to him, ‘Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. The Lord is with you when you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you. 3For a long time Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach and without the law. 4But in their distress they turned to the Lord, the God of Israel, and sought him, and he was found by them. 5In those days it was not safe to travel about, for all the inhabitants of the lands were in great turmoil. 6One nation was being crushed by another and one city by another, because God was troubling them with every kind of distress. 7But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.’
8When Asa heard these words and the prophecy of Azariah son of15:8 Vulgate and Syriac (see also Septuagint and verse 1); Hebrew does not have Azariah son of. Oded the prophet, he took courage. He removed the detestable idols from the whole land of Judah and Benjamin and from the towns he had captured in the hills of Ephraim. He repaired the altar of the Lord that was in front of the portico of the Lord’s temple.
9Then he assembled all Judah and Benjamin and the people from Ephraim, Manasseh and Simeon who had settled among them, for large numbers had come over to him from Israel when they saw that the Lord his God was with him.
10They assembled at Jerusalem in the third month of the fifteenth year of Asa’s reign. 11At that time they sacrificed to the Lord seven hundred head of cattle and seven thousand sheep and goats from the plunder they had brought back. 12They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their ancestors, with all their heart and soul. 13All who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, were to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman. 14They took an oath to the Lord with loud acclamation, with shouting and with trumpets and horns. 15All Judah rejoiced about the oath because they had sworn it wholeheartedly. They sought God eagerly, and he was found by them. So the Lord gave them rest on every side.
16King Asa also deposed his grandmother Maakah from her position as queen mother, because she had made a repulsive image for the worship of Asherah. Asa cut it down, broke it up and burned it in the Kidron Valley. 17Although he did not remove the high places from Israel, Asa’s heart was fully committed to the Lord all his life. 18He brought into the temple of God the silver and gold and the articles that he and his father had dedicated.
19There was no more war until the thirty-fifth year of Asa’s reign.
