Les frontières du pays promis
1L’Eternel parla à Moïse, en disant : 2Ordonne aux Israélites : Quand vous serez entrés dans le pays de Canaan, voici quel territoire vous reviendra en possession : ses frontières sont les suivantes34.2 En approchant du moment d’entrer en Canaan, Israël reçoit des indications précises sur les limites du pays. Celles-ci ne furent atteintes qu’au temps de Salomon (voir Jos 15 ; Ez 47.13-20). : 3la limite méridionale de votre pays partira du désert de Tsîn et longera le pays d’Edom. A l’est, votre frontière sud partira de la mer Morte ; 4elle obliquera au sud vers la montée des Scorpions et passera par Tsîn pour aboutir au sud de Qadesh-Barnéa. Elle ira ensuite vers Hatsar-Addar, et passera à Atsmôn. 5De là, elle se dirigera vers le torrent d’Egypte pour aboutir à la mer. 6La mer Méditerranée34.6 En hébreu, la Grande Mer. constituera votre frontière à l’ouest. 7Au nord, vous ferez aller votre frontière de la mer Méditerranée jusqu’à la montagne de Hor34.7 Une montagne au nord du pays d’Israël, sans doute un sommet du Liban, à ne pas confondre avec la montagne de même nom où mourut Aaron (Nb 20.22 ; 33.37-41) au sud du pays.. 8De là, vous la ferez aller en direction de Lebo-Hamath34.8 Certains traduisent : l’entrée de Hamath. pour aboutir à Tsedad. 9De là, elle repartira en direction de Ziphrôn et atteindra Hatsar-Enân. Ce sera là votre frontière nord. 10A l’est, vous ferez aller votre frontière de Hatsar-Enân à Shepham, 11d’où elle descendra vers Ribla à l’est d’Aïn et suivra les pentes qui bordent la rive orientale du lac de Kinnéreth34.11 Ribla sur l’Oronte (2 R 23.33 ; 25.21) est à 80 kilomètres au sud du Hamath. Le lac mentionné (appelé ici lac de Kinnéreth) est celui de Tibériade, souvent mentionné dans les évangiles. 12jusqu’au Jourdain pour aboutir à la mer Morte. Voilà ce que sera votre pays avec les frontières qui l’entourent.
13Moïse donna les instructions suivantes aux Israélites : C’est là le territoire que vous partagerez par tirage au sort et que l’Eternel a ordonné d’attribuer aux neuf tribus et demie34.13 Voir Nb 26.52-56 ; 33.54 ; Jos 14.1-2.. 14Car la tribu de Ruben et celle de Gad ont déjà reçu leur propriété pour leur tribu, de même que la demi-tribu de Manassé. 15Ces deux tribus et demie ont reçu leur patrimoine foncier de ce côté-ci du Jourdain, en face de Jéricho, à l’est.
Les responsables du partage du pays
16L’Eternel parla encore à Moïse : 17Voici les noms des hommes qui procéderont au partage du pays entre vous : le prêtre Eléazar et Josué, fils de Noun. 18De plus, vous prendrez un chef par tribu pour répartir le pays. 19Voici les noms de ces hommes : Pour la tribu de Juda : Caleb, fils de Yephounné ; 20pour celle de Siméon : Samuel, fils d’Ammihoud ; 21pour celle de Benjamin : Elidad, fils de Kislôn ; 22pour celle de Dan : le chef Bouqqi, fils de Yogli ; 23pour les descendants de Joseph, pour la tribu de Manassé : le chef Hanniel, fils d’Ephod ; 24pour celle d’Ephraïm : le chef Qemouel, fils de Shiphtân ; 25pour celle de Zabulon ; le prince Elitsaphân, fils de Parnak ; 26pour celle d’Issacar : le prince Paltiel, fils d’Azzân ; 27pour celle d’Aser : le chef Ahihoud, fils de Shelomi ; 28pour celle de Nephtali : le chef Pedahel, fils d’Ammihoud. 29Tels sont ceux à qui l’Eternel ordonna de répartir le pays de Canaan entre les Israélites.
Israel Arrives at the Borders of Canaan
1The Lord said to Moses, 2“Give the Israelites a command. Tell them, ‘You are going to enter Canaan. The land will be given to you as your own. Here are the borders it must have.
3“ ‘Your southern border will include part of the Desert of Zin. It will be along the border of Edom. Your southern border will start in the east from the southern end of the Dead Sea. 4It will cross south of Scorpion Pass. It will continue on to Zin. From there it will go south of Kadesh Barnea. Then it will go to Hazar Addar and over to Azmon. 5There it will turn and join the Wadi of Egypt. It will come to an end at the Mediterranean Sea.
6Your western border will be the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. That will be your border on the west.
7For your northern border, run a line from the Mediterranean Sea to Mount Hor. 8Continue it from Mount Hor to Lebo Hamath. Then the border will go to Zedad. 9It will continue to Ziphron. It will come to an end at Hazar Enan. That will be your border on the north.
10For your eastern border, run a line from Hazar Enan to Shepham. 11The border will go down from Shepham to Riblah. Riblah is on the east side of Ain. From there the border will continue along the slopes east of the Sea of Galilee. 12Then the border will go down along the Jordan River. It will come to an end at the Dead Sea.
“ ‘That will be your land. And those will be its borders on every side.’ ”
13Moses gave the Israelites a command. He said, “Cast lots when you divide up the land. Each tribe will have its own share. The Lord has ordered it to be given to the nine and a half tribes. 14The families of the tribes of Reuben and Gad have already received their shares. The families of half of the tribe of Manasseh have also received their share. 15Those two and a half tribes have received their shares east of the Jordan River. It flows near Jericho. Their land is toward the sunrise.”
16The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, 17“Here are the names of the men who will give out the shares of the land to your people. They are Eleazar the priest and Joshua, the son of Nun. 18Also appoint one leader from each of the nine and a half tribes. They will help you give out the land.
19“Here are their names.
“Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, is from the tribe of Judah.
20Shemuel, the son of Ammihud, is from the tribe of Simeon.
21Elidad, the son of Kislon, is from the tribe of Benjamin.
22Bukki, the son of Jogli, is the leader from the tribe of Dan.
23Hanniel, the son of Ephod, is the leader from the tribe of Manasseh. Manasseh was the son of Joseph.
24Kemuel, the son of Shiphtan, is the leader from the tribe of Ephraim. Ephraim was the son of Joseph.
25Elizaphan, the son of Parnak, is the leader from the tribe of Zebulun.
26Paltiel, the son of Azzan, is the leader from the tribe of Issachar.
27Ahihud, the son of Shelomi, is the leader from the tribe of Asher.
28Pedahel, the son of Ammihud, is the leader from the tribe of Naphtali.”
29These are the men the Lord commanded to give out the shares of the land. They were commanded to give them to Israel in the land of Canaan.
