Áp-ra-ham Qua Đời
1Áp-ra-ham tái hôn và cưới Kê-tu-ra. 2Bà sinh cho người sáu đứa con: Xim-ran, Giốc-chan, Mê-đan, Ma-đi-an, Dích-bác, và Su-ách. 3Giốc-chan sinh Sê-ba và Đê-đan; dòng dõi của Đê-đan là họ A-chu-rim, họ Lê-tu-chim, và họ Lê-um-mim. 4Ma-đi-an sinh năm con trai: Ê-pha, Ê-phe, Hê-nóc, A-bi-đa, và Ên-đa. Đó là dòng dõi bà Kê-tu-ra.
5Áp-ra-ham cho Y-sác hưởng trọn gia tài. 6Ông cũng cho các con thứ mỗi người một số phẩm vật và bảo họ đi qua đông phương, ở cách xa Y-sác.
7Áp-ra-ham hưởng thọ 175 tuổi. 8Áp-ra-ham trút hơi thở cuối cùng và qua đời khi tuổi đã cao, được mãn nguyện trong cuộc sống; và ông trở về với tổ phụ mình 9Y-sác và Ích-ma-ên, hai con trai người, an táng người trong hang Mạc-bê-la, gần Mam-rê, thuộc cánh đồng của Ép-rôn, con trai Xô-ha, người Hê-tít 10Đây là cánh đồng mà Áp-ra-ham đã mua của Ép-rôn, con trai Xô-ha, người Hê-tít. Đây cũng là mộ địa của Sa-ra, vợ Áp-ra-ham. 11Sau khi Áp-ra-ham qua đời, Đức Chúa Trời ban phước dồi dào cho Y-sác; lúc ấy Y-sác đã dời xuống La-chai-roi ở miền nam.
Dòng Dõi Ích-ma-ên
12Đây là dòng dõi của Ích-ma-ên, con trai Áp-ra-ham và A-ga, người Ai Cập, nữ tì của Sa-ra. 13Các con trai của Ích-ma-ên là: Trưởng nam Nê-ba-giốt, Kê-đa, Át-bê-ên, Mi-bô-sam, 14Mích-ma, Đu-ma, Ma-sa, 15Ha-đa, Thê-ma, Giê-thu, Na-phích, và Kết-ma. 16Đó là mười hai con trai của Ích-ma-ên; họ được đặt tên theo địa điểm định cư và đóng trại. Đó là mười hai tộc trưởng25:16 Nt người cai trị của dân tộc họ. 17Ích-ma-ên hưởng thọ 137 tuổi, qua đời, và về với tổ phụ. 18Dòng dõi của Ích-ma-ên định cư ở trước mặt anh em họ, từ Ha-vi-la đến Su-rơ đối ngang Ai Cập, trên đường đi A-sy-ri.
Ê-sau và Gia-cốp Được Sinh Ra
19Đây là dòng dõi của Y-sác, con trai Áp-ra-ham. 20Khi được 40 tuổi, Y-sác cưới Rê-bê-ca, con gái của Bê-tu-ên, em của La-ban, người A-ram ở xứ Pha-đan A-ram.25:20 Vùng Lưỡng Hà
21Y-sác cầu thay cho vợ mình đang son sẻ, xin Chúa Hằng Hữu cho nàng sinh con. Chúa Hằng Hữu nhậm lời nên Rê-bê-ca thụ thai. 22Dường như các bào thai đánh nhau trong bụng, đến nỗi nàng than rằng: “Tôi chịu không nổi.” Nàng cầu hỏi Chúa Hằng Hữu.
23Chúa Hằng Hữu đáp: “Hai con trai trong lòng ngươi sẽ trở thành hai nước chống đối nhau. Nước này mạnh hơn nước kia; đứa lớn sẽ phục dịch đứa nhỏ.”
24Quả nhiên, Rê-bê-ca sinh đôi. 25Đứa đầu có nhiều lông đỏ hung hung, nên được đặt tên là Ê-sau.25:25 Gốc từ Hê-bơ-rơ có nghĩa “lòng” 26Đứa sau nắm gót chân anh nó, Ê-sau, lúc lọt lòng, nên có tên là Gia-cốp.25:26 Nghĩa là “nó nắm gót chân” hoặc “nó chiếm chỗ” Năm ấy, Y-sác đã sáu mươi tuổi.
Ê-sau Bán Quyền Trưởng Nam
27Hai đứa trẻ lớn lên. Ê-sau là một thợ săn tài giỏi, thường xông pha nơi đồng nội và rừng xanh; còn Gia-cốp thích sống trầm lặng trong nhà, quanh quẩn bên mẹ. 28Vì thế, Ê-sau được Y-sác cưng, còn Gia-cốp được mẹ yêu chiều.
29Một hôm, Ê-sau đi săn về, mệt lả, và thấy Gia-cốp đang nấu nồi xúp thơm ngào ngạt. 30Ê-sau năn nỉ Gia-cốp: “Chao ôi, đói quá! Em cho anh ăn món súp đo đỏ đó với!” (Do đó mà Ê-sau có biệt danh là Ê-đôm, nghĩa là “đỏ.”)
31Gia-cốp đề nghị: “Được rồi, anh cứ trao quyền trưởng nam cho tôi, tôi cho anh ăn súp!”
32Ê-sau đáp: “Khi người ta đói gần chết, người ta còn giữ quyền trưởng nam làm gì.”
33Gia-cốp nắm ngay cơ hội: “Vậy anh thề đi.” Ê-Sau bèn thề và bán quyền trưởng nam cho em mình.
34Gia-cốp liền cho Ê-sau ăn bánh, đậu đỏ, và xúp. Ăn xong, Ê-sau đứng dậy ra đi, không đếm xỉa gì đến quyền trưởng nam cả.
Abraham Dies
1Abraham had married another woman. Her name was Keturah. 2She had Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak and Shuah by Abraham. 3Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan. The children of Dedan were the Ashurites, the Letushites and the Leummites. 4The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanok, Abida and Eldaah. All of them were members of Keturah’s family line.
5Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac. 6But while he was still living, he gave gifts to the sons of his concubines. Then he sent them away from his son Isaac. He sent them to the land of the east.
7Abraham lived a total of 175 years. 8He took his last breath and died when he was very old. He had lived a very long time. Then he joined the members of his family who had already died. 9Abraham’s sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him. They put his body in the cave of Machpelah near Mamre. It was in the field of Ephron, the son of Zohar the Hittite. 10Abraham had bought the field from the Hittites. He was buried there with his wife Sarah. 11After Abraham died, God blessed his son Isaac. At that time Isaac was living near Beer Lahai Roi.
The Sons of Ishmael
12Here is the story of the family line of Abraham’s son Ishmael. Hagar gave birth to Ishmael by Abraham. Hagar was Sarah’s slave from Egypt.
13Here are the names of the sons of Ishmael. They are listed in the order they were born.
Nebaioth was Ishmael’s oldest son.
Then came Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,
14Mishma, Dumah, Massa,
15Hadad, Tema, Jetur,
Naphish and Kedemah.
16All of them were Ishmael’s sons. They were rulers of 12 tribes. They all lived in their own settlements and camps.
17Ishmael lived a total of 137 years. Then he took his last breath and died. He joined the members of his family who had already died. 18His children settled in the area between Havilah and Shur. It was near the eastern border of Egypt, as you go toward Ashur. Ishmael’s children weren’t friendly toward any of the tribes related to them.
Jacob and Esau
19Here is the story of the family line of Abraham’s son Isaac.
Abraham was the father of Isaac. 20Isaac was 40 years old when he married Rebekah. She was the daughter of Bethuel, the Aramean from Paddan Aram. She was also the sister of Laban, the Aramean.
21Rebekah couldn’t have children. So Isaac prayed to the Lord for her. And the Lord answered his prayer. His wife Rebekah became pregnant. 22The babies struggled with each other inside her. She said, “Why is this happening to me?” So she went to ask the Lord what she should do.
23The Lord said to her,
“Two nations are in your body.
Two tribes that are now inside you will be separated.
One nation will be stronger than the other.
The older son will serve the younger one.”
24The time came for Rebekah to have her babies. There were twin boys in her body. 25The first one to come out was red. His whole body was covered with hair. So they named him Esau. 26Then his brother came out. His hand was holding onto Esau’s heel. So he was named Jacob. Isaac was 60 years old when Rebekah had them.
27The boys grew up. Esau became a skillful hunter. He liked the open country. But Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents. 28Isaac liked the meat of wild animals. So Esau was his favorite son. But Rebekah’s favorite was Jacob.
29One day Jacob was cooking some stew. Esau came in from the open country. He was very hungry. 30He said to Jacob, “Quick! I’m very hungry! Let me have some of that red stew!” That’s why he was also named Edom.
31Jacob replied, “First sell me the rights that belong to you as the oldest son in the family.”
32“Look, I’m dying of hunger,” Esau said. “What good are those rights to me?”
33But Jacob said, “First promise to sell me your rights.” So Esau promised to do it. He sold Jacob all the rights that belonged to him as the oldest son.
34Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. Esau ate and drank. Then he got up and left.
So Esau didn’t value the rights that belonged to him as the oldest son.
