1Tôi mong anh chị em biết rõ: Tôi đã nỗ lực đấu tranh cho anh chị em, cho người Lao-đi-xê cũng như cho các anh chị em khác chưa từng gặp mặt. 2Tôi cầu xin Đức Chúa Trời khích lệ tinh thần anh chị em, cho anh chị em liên kết chặt chẽ trong tình yêu thương, hiểu biết Chúa thật vững vàng và thấu triệt huyền nhiệm của Đức Chúa Trời tức là Chúa Cứu Thế. 3Vì Chúa Cứu Thế là kho báu tiềm tàng mọi khôn ngoan và tri thức.
4Tôi nói rõ điều ấy để anh chị em khỏi bị ai quyến rũ lừa dối bằng những luận chứng có vẻ hợp lý. 5Dù tôi xa cách anh chị em, nhưng tinh thần tôi vẫn ở bên anh chị em. Tôi mừng vì thấy anh chị em sống trong tinh thần hòa hợp và lòng tin Chúa Cứu Thế của anh chị em thật vững vàng.
Tự Do Khỏi Các Luật Lệ và Đời Sống Mới trong Chúa Cứu Thế
6Anh chị em đã tin Chúa Cứu Thế cứu rỗi anh chị em, hãy cứ tiếp tục tin cậy Ngài trong mọi việc và sống trong Ngài. 7Anh chị em đã đâm rễ trong Chúa, hãy lớn lên trong Ngài, đức tin càng thêm vững mạnh, đúng theo điều anh chị em đã học hỏi, và luôn luôn vui mừng tạ ơn Chúa về mọi điều Ngài ban cho anh chị em.
8Hãy thận trọng để khỏi mắc bẫy những người dùng triết lý và mưu mẹo cạn cợt theo thói tục của người đời, theo hệ ý thức của trần gian chứ không theo lời dạy của Chúa Cứu Thế. 9Chúa Cứu Thế là hiện thân của tất cả bản chất thần linh của Đức Chúa Trời. 10Trong Ngài, anh chị em đầy đủ mọi sự, vì Ngài tể trị mọi nền thống trị và uy quyền.
11Khi đến với Chúa, anh em được Ngài giải thoát khỏi tội lỗi, không phải do cuộc giải phẫu thể xác bằng lễ cắt bì, nhưng do cuộc giải phẫu tâm linh, là lễ báp-tem của Chúa Cứu Thế. 12Do lễ báp-tem ấy, anh em đã chết và được chôn với Chúa, rồi được sống lại với Ngài do đức tin nơi quyền năng Đức Chúa Trời, là quyền năng phục sinh của Chúa Cứu Thế.
13Khi trước tâm linh anh chị em đã chết vì tội lỗi và vì bản tính hư hoại,2:13 Ctd xác thịt nhưng Đức Chúa Trời đã làm cho anh chị em sống lại với Chúa Cứu Thế và tha thứ mọi tội lỗi của chúng ta. 14Đức Chúa Trời đã hủy bỏ tờ cáo trạng cùng các luật lệ ràng buộc chúng ta, đem đóng đinh vào cây thập tự. 15Như thế, Đức Chúa Trời đã tước hết uy quyền thống trị của Sa-tan, công khai phô bày cho mọi người biết Chúa Cứu Thế đã chiến thắng nó tại cây thập tự.
16Vậy đừng cho ai xét đoán anh chị em về món ăn thức uống, về lễ nghi, ngày trăng mới hay ngày Sa-bát. 17Đó là những luật lệ tạm thời, hình bóng của một thực tại sẽ đến sau, là Chúa Cứu Thế. 18Có những người vừa làm bộ khiêm tốn vừa thờ lạy thiên sứ,2:18 Chỉ về các ác quỷ, cũng gọi là thiên sứ ác đừng để họ lừa dối anh chị em. Họ chỉ dựa vào hình ảnh lúc xuất thần rồi thêu dệt theo quan điểm xác thịt, 19chứ chẳng có liên lạc gì với đầu não là Chúa Cứu Thế. Vì Chúa là Đầu, chúng ta là thân thể, được nuôi dưỡng, kết hợp bằng các sợi gân và khớp xương và được phát triển đúng mức trong Đức Chúa Trời.
20Anh chị em đã cùng chết với Chúa Cứu Thế, được giải thoát khỏi những quan niệm lầm lạc của thế gian, sao còn tuân theo các nguyên tắc kiêng cữ như: 21“Không ăn! Không nếm! Không đụng chạm!”? 22Đó là những thức ăn hư hoại theo luật lệ và lời dạy của loài người. 23Những luật lệ ấy có vẻ khôn ngoan theo nếp sống đạo hạnh, khiêm tốn và khắc khổ thân xác, nhưng chẳng kiềm chế nổi ý tưởng xấu và dục vọng con người.
1I want you to know how hard I am contending for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. 2My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, 3in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 4I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. 5For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how disciplined you are and how firm your faith in Christ is.
Spiritual Fullness in Christ
6So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
8See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces2:8 Or the basic principles; also in verse 20 of this world rather than on Christ.
9For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority. 11In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh2:11 In contexts like this, the Greek word for flesh (sarx) refers to the sinful state of human beings, often presented as a power in opposition to the Spirit; also in verse 13. was put off when you were circumcised by2:11 Or put off in the circumcision of Christ, 12having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.
13When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you2:13 Some manuscripts us alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. 15And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.2:15 Or them in him
Freedom From Human Rules
16Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. 18Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind. 19They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.
20Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: 21“Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? 22These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings. 23Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.
