1เราประกาศแก่ท่านถึงพระวาทะแห่งชีวิตซึ่งดำรงอยู่ตั้งแต่ปฐมกาล ซึ่งเราได้ยิน ได้เห็นกับตา ได้พินิจดู และได้สัมผัสด้วยมือของเรา 2ชีวิตนี้ได้ปรากฏขึ้นแล้ว เราได้เห็นและได้เป็นพยาน และเราประกาศให้ท่านทราบถึงชีวิตนิรันดร์นี้ซึ่งดำรงอยู่กับพระบิดาและได้ปรากฏแก่เรา 3เราประกาศให้ท่านทราบถึงสิ่งที่เราได้เห็นและได้ยินเพื่อท่านจะได้ร่วมสามัคคีธรรมกับเราด้วย และการสามัคคีธรรมกับเราคือการสามัคคีธรรมกับพระบิดา และกับพระบุตรของพระองค์คือพระเยซูคริสต์ 4เราเขียนข้อความเหล่านี้มาเพื่อให้ความชื่นชมยินดีของเรา1:4 สำเนาต้นฉบับบางสำเนาว่าของท่านทั้งหลายเต็มบริบูรณ์
ดำเนินในความสว่าง
5นี่เป็นเรื่องราวซึ่งเราได้ยินจากพระองค์และประกาศแก่ท่าน คือพระเจ้าทรงเป็นความสว่าง ในพระองค์ไม่มีความมืดเลย 6ถ้าเราอ้างว่ามีสามัคคีธรรมกับพระองค์แต่ยังดำเนินในความมืด เราก็โกหกและไม่ได้ดำเนินชีวิตโดยความจริง 7แต่ถ้าเราดำเนินในความสว่างเหมือนอย่างที่พระองค์ประทับในความสว่าง เราก็ร่วมสามัคคีธรรมกันและพระโลหิตของพระเยซูพระบุตรของพระองค์ก็ชำระเราพ้นจากบาปทั้งปวง1:7 หรือบาปทุกอย่าง
8ถ้าเราอ้างว่าไม่มีบาป เราก็หลอกตัวเองและความจริงไม่ได้อยู่ในเราเลย 9ถ้าเราสารภาพบาปของเรา พระองค์ทรงสัตย์ซื่อและเที่ยงธรรมจะทรงอภัยบาปของเราและชำระเราให้พ้นจากความอธรรมทั้งสิ้น 10ถ้าเราอ้างว่าไม่ได้ทำบาปก็เท่ากับหาว่าพระองค์เป็นผู้มุสา และพระดำรัสของพระองค์ไม่ได้อยู่ในชีวิตของเราเลย
1That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; 2(For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) 3That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.
5This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 8If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
