บทนำ
1ในดินแดนอูสมีชายคนหนึ่งชื่อโยบ เป็นคนดีเพียบพร้อม เที่ยงธรรม ยำเกรงพระเจ้า และหลีกห่างจากความชั่ว 2เขามีบุตรชายเจ็ดคนและบุตรสาวสามคน 3และเขามีแกะถึงเจ็ดพันตัว อูฐสามพันตัว วัวผู้ห้าร้อยคู่ ลาห้าร้อยตัว และมีคนรับใช้มากมาย เขาเป็นคนยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดในบรรดาชาวตะวันออก
4บุตรชายของโยบจะผลัดกันจัดงานเลี้ยงในบ้านของตน และเชิญพี่น้องชายหญิงมาร่วมในงานด้วย 5เมื่องานเลี้ยงเสร็จสิ้นลงแต่ละครั้ง โยบจะให้พวกเขามาชำระตัว ตั้งแต่เช้าตรู่โยบจะถวายเครื่องเผาบูชาให้บุตรแต่ละคนโดยระลึกว่า “บางทีลูกของเราอาจทำบาปหรือแช่งด่าพระเจ้าอยู่ในใจ” นี่คือธรรมเนียมปฏิบัติของโยบเสมอมา
การทดสอบโยบครั้งแรก
6วันหนึ่งบรรดาทูตสวรรค์1:6 ภาษาฮีบรูว่าบรรดาบุตรของพระเจ้ามาชุมนุมกันต่อหน้าองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า ซาตาน1:6 แปลว่า ผู้กล่าวหาก็มาด้วย 7องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าตรัสถามซาตานว่า “เจ้ามาจากที่ไหน?”
ซาตานทูลตอบองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าว่า “ท่องเที่ยวไปมาในโลกพระเจ้าข้า”
8องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าจึงตรัสกับซาตานว่า “เจ้าสังเกตดูโยบผู้รับใช้ของเราบ้างหรือไม่? ทั่วโลกนี้ไม่มีใครเหมือนเขา เขาเป็นคนดีเพียบพร้อม เที่ยงธรรม ยำเกรงพระเจ้า และหลีกห่างจากความชั่ว”
9ซาตานทูลตอบว่า “โยบยำเกรงพระเจ้าโดยไม่หวังอะไรเลยหรือ? 10พระองค์ทรงล้อมรั้วป้องกันเขาและครอบครัวกับทรัพย์สินทุกอย่างของเขาไม่ใช่หรือ? พระองค์ทรงอวยพรกิจการทุกอย่างที่เขาทำ ดังนั้นฝูงสัตว์ทั้งหลายของเขาจึงขยายทั่วแผ่นดิน 11ลองพระองค์ยื่นพระหัตถ์ออกทำลายทรัพย์สินทุกอย่างของเขาสิ รับรองว่าเขาจะแช่งด่าพระองค์ต่อหน้าเลยทีเดียว”
12องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าตรัสกับซาตานว่า “เอาเถิด ทุกอย่างที่เขามีก็อยู่ในมือของเจ้าแล้ว แต่อย่าแตะต้องตัวเขาก็แล้วกัน”
ซาตานจึงทูลลาองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าไป
13วันหนึ่งขณะที่บุตรชายบุตรสาวของโยบกำลังกินเลี้ยงกันอยู่ที่บ้านของพี่ชายคนโต 14ก็มีคนหนึ่งมาบอกโยบว่า “วัวของท่านกำลังไถนาอยู่และลากินหญ้าอยู่ใกล้ๆ 15ก็มีพวกเสบามาปล้น ต้อนสัตว์ไปและฆ่าฟันคนเลี้ยงตายหมด มีข้าพเจ้าเพียงคนเดียวหนีรอดมาเรียนท่าน!”
16ขณะที่คนนั้นพูดยังไม่ทันขาดคำ ก็มีอีกคนมาบอกว่า “ไฟของพระเจ้าตกลงมาจากท้องฟ้าเผาผลาญฝูงแกะและคนเลี้ยงของท่านวอดวาย มีข้าพเจ้าเพียงคนเดียวหนีรอดมาเรียนท่าน!”
17ก่อนที่คนนั้นจะพูดจบ ก็มีอีกคนมาบอกว่า “กองโจรชาวเคลเดียสามกองมาไล่ต้อนอูฐของท่านไปและฆ่าฟันบ่าวไพร่ของท่าน มีข้าพเจ้าเพียงคนเดียวหนีรอดมาเรียนท่าน!”
18ขณะที่เขายังพูดอยู่ก็มีอีกคนหนึ่งเข้ามาบอกว่า “บุตรชายบุตรสาวของท่านกำลังกินเลี้ยงกันอยู่ที่บ้านพี่ชายคนโต 19ทันใดนั้นก็มีพายุใหญ่พัดจากทะเลทรายซัดกระหน่ำจนบ้านพังลงมาทับพวกเขาตายหมด มีข้าพเจ้าเพียงคนเดียวหนีรอดมาเรียนท่าน!”
20เมื่อโยบได้ยินดังนั้น เขาจึงลุกขึ้น ฉีกเสื้อคลุม และโกนศีรษะ เขาซบกายลงกับพื้นนมัสการพระเจ้า 21และกล่าวว่า
“ข้าพเจ้าออกมาจากครรภ์มารดาตัวเปล่า
และข้าพเจ้าจะจากไป1:21 หรือกลับไปที่นั่นตัวเปล่า
องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าประทานและองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงเอาไป
สรรเสริญพระนามของพระยาห์เวห์”
22ในเหตุการณ์ทั้งหมดนี้ โยบไม่ได้ทำบาปโดยกล่าวโทษพระเจ้าเลย
Prologue
1In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. 2He had seven sons and three daughters, 3and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.
4His sons used to hold feasts in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, ‘Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.’ This was Job’s regular custom.
6One day the angels1:6 Hebrew the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan1:6 Hebrew satan means adversary. also came with them. 7The Lord said to Satan, ‘Where have you come from?’
Satan answered the Lord, ‘From roaming throughout the earth, going to and fro on it.’
8Then the Lord said to Satan, ‘Have you considered my servant Job? There is no-one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.’
9‘Does Job fear God for nothing?’ Satan replied. 10‘Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. 11But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.’
12The Lord said to Satan, ‘Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.’
Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.
13One day when Job’s sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the eldest brother’s house, 14a messenger came to Job and said, ‘The oxen were ploughing and the donkeys were grazing nearby, 15and the Sabeans attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!’
16While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, ‘The fire of God fell from the heavens and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!’
17While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, ‘The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!’
18While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, ‘Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the eldest brother’s house, 19when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!’
20At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship 21and said:
‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I shall depart.1:21 Or shall return there
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;
may the name of the Lord be praised.’
22In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.
