เปโตรชี้แจงการกระทำของเขา
1เหล่าอัครทูตและพวกพี่น้องทั่วแคว้นยูเดียได้ยินว่าคนต่างชาติก็ได้รับพระวจนะของพระเจ้าด้วย 2ดังนั้นเมื่อเปโตรกลับมาที่กรุงเยรูซาเล็มพวกผู้เชื่อซึ่งเข้าสุหนัตแล้วจึงวิพากษ์วิจารณ์เขา 3และกล่าวว่า “ท่านเข้าไปในบ้านของผู้ที่ไม่ได้เข้าสุหนัตและรับประทานอาหารกับเขา”
4เปโตรจึงชี้แจงทุกสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นให้ฟังตามลำดับว่า 5“ข้าพเจ้าอยู่ที่เมืองยัฟฟา ขณะกำลังอธิษฐานและตกอยู่ในภวังค์ข้าพเจ้าก็ได้รับนิมิต เห็นสิ่งหนึ่งเหมือนผ้าผืนใหญ่ทั้งสี่มุมหย่อนจากฟ้าสวรรค์ลงมายังที่ซึ่งข้าพเจ้าอยู่ 6ข้าพเจ้ามองเข้าไปเห็นสัตว์สี่เท้าของแผ่นดินโลก สัตว์ป่า สัตว์เลื้อยคลาน และนกในอากาศ 7แล้วข้าพเจ้าได้ยินเสียงหนึ่งบอกข้าพเจ้าว่า ‘เปโตรเอ๋ย จงลุกขึ้นฆ่ากินเถิด’
8“ข้าพเจ้าตอบว่า ‘ไม่ได้พระเจ้าข้า! ไม่เคยมีสิ่งเป็นมลทินหรือไม่สะอาดเข้าปากของข้าพระองค์เลย’
9“เสียงนั้นพูดจากฟ้าสวรรค์เป็นครั้งที่สองว่า ‘อย่าเรียกสิ่งซึ่งพระเจ้าทรงชำระให้สะอาดแล้วว่าเป็นมลทิน’ 10เป็นเช่นนี้ถึงสามครั้ง แล้วทั้งหมดนั้นก็ถูกรับขึ้นสู่ฟ้าสวรรค์อีก
11“ทันใดนั้นเองชายสามคนจากเมืองซีซารียาที่เขาส่งมาหาข้าพเจ้าก็มาหยุดอยู่ที่บ้านซึ่งข้าพเจ้าพักอยู่ 12พระวิญญาณทรงสั่งให้ข้าพเจ้าไปกับพวกเขาโดยไม่ต้องลังเล พี่น้องหกคนนี้ก็ไปด้วยและเราเข้าไปในบ้านของชายผู้นั้น 13เขาเล่าให้เราฟังว่าได้เห็นทูตสวรรค์มาปรากฏในบ้านของเขาและกล่าวว่า ‘จงส่งคนไปเมืองยัฟฟา แล้วรับตัวซีโมนที่เรียกกันว่าเปโตรมาเถิด 14เขาจะแจ้งเรื่องราวแก่เจ้าแล้วเจ้ากับทั้งครัวเรือนของเจ้าจะได้รับความรอดผ่านเรื่องราวนั้น’
15“พอข้าพเจ้าเริ่มพูดพระวิญญาณบริสุทธิ์ก็เสด็จลงมาเหนือพวกเขาเหมือนที่ได้เสด็จมาเหนือเราทั้งหลายในตอนแรก 16แล้วข้าพเจ้าจึงนึกขึ้นได้ที่องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าตรัสไว้ว่า ‘ยอห์นให้บัพติศมาด้วย11:16 หรือในน้ำ แต่ท่านทั้งหลายจะได้รับบัพติศมาด้วย11:16 หรือในพระวิญญาณบริสุทธิ์’ 17ดังนั้นถ้าพระเจ้าทรงให้ของประทานอย่างเดียวกันแก่พวกเขาเหมือนที่ทรงให้แก่พวกเราผู้เชื่อในองค์พระเยซูคริสต์เจ้า แล้วข้าพเจ้าเป็นใครกันเล่าที่คิดว่าจะขัดขวางพระเจ้าได้?”
18เมื่อพวกเขาได้ยินเช่นนี้ก็ไม่มีข้อคัดค้านใดอีกและพากันสรรเสริญพระเจ้าว่า “ถ้าอย่างนั้น แม้คนต่างชาติพระเจ้าก็ทรงโปรดให้กลับใจใหม่เข้าสู่ชีวิตด้วย”
คริสตจักรในอันทิโอก
19ฝ่ายบรรดาผู้ที่กระจัดกระจายไปเนื่องจากการข่มเหงอันเกี่ยวโยงกับสเทเฟน ก็เดินทางไปไกลถึงเมืองฟีนิเซีย เกาะไซปรัสและเมืองอันทิโอก และเล่าเรื่องราวนั้นแก่พวกยิวเท่านั้น 20แต่ก็มีบางคนในพวกเขาที่มาจากเกาะไซปรัสและจากเมืองไซรีนได้ไปที่เมืองอันทิโอกและเล่าข่าวประเสริฐเรื่ององค์พระเยซูเจ้าแก่ชาวกรีกด้วย 21พระหัตถ์ของพระเจ้าอยู่กับเขาเหล่านั้น ผู้คนมากมายเชื่อและกลับใจมาหาองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า
22ข่าวนี้มาถึงคริสตจักรที่กรุงเยรูซาเล็มพวกเขาจึงส่งบารนาบัสไปยังเมืองอันทิโอก 23เมื่อบารนาบัสมาถึงและได้เห็นพยานหลักฐานที่แสดงถึงพระคุณของพระเจ้าก็ชื่นชมยินดีและให้กำลังใจพวกเขาทุกคนให้สัตย์ซื่อมั่นคงต่อองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าอย่างสุดใจ 24บารนาบัสเป็นคนดี เต็มด้วยพระวิญญาณบริสุทธิ์และความเชื่อ คนจำนวนมากก็มาเชื่อองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า
25แล้วบารนาบัสจึงไปตามหาเซาโลที่เมืองทาร์ซัส 26เมื่อพบแล้วก็พาเขามาเมืองอันทิโอก บารนาบัสกับเซาโลร่วมประชุมกับคริสตจักรและสั่งสอนคนเป็นอันมากตลอดหนึ่งปีเต็ม และที่เมืองอันทิโอกนั้นเองพวกสาวกได้ชื่อว่าคริสเตียนเป็นครั้งแรก
27ครั้งนั้นมีผู้เผยพระวจนะบางคนจากกรุงเยรูซาเล็มมาที่อันทิโอก 28พวกเขาคนหนึ่งชื่ออากาบัสยืนขึ้นพยากรณ์โดยพระวิญญาณว่าจะเกิดการกันดารอาหารอย่างรุนแรงทั่วจักรวรรดิโรมัน (เหตุการณ์ครั้งนี้เกิดขึ้นในสมัยของคลาวดิอัส) 29เหล่าสาวกจึงตัดสินใจว่าจะร่วมกันช่วยเหลือพวกพี่น้องที่อยู่ในแคว้นยูเดียตามกำลังของแต่ละคน 30พวกเขาทำตามนั้นโดยฝากความช่วยเหลือของพวกเขาให้บารนาบัสกับเซาโลนำมาให้เหล่าผู้ปกครองคริสตจักร
Peter explains his actions
1The apostles and the believers throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. 2So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticised him 3and said, ‘You went into the house of uncircumcised men and ate with them.’
4Starting from the beginning, Peter told them the whole story: 5‘I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. I saw something like a large sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to where I was. 6I looked into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, reptiles and birds. 7Then I heard a voice telling me, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.”
8‘I replied, “Surely not, Lord! Nothing impure or unclean has ever entered my mouth.”
9‘The voice spoke from heaven a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.” 10This happened three times, and then it was all pulled up to heaven again.
11‘Right then three men who had been sent to me from Caesarea stopped at the house where I was staying. 12The Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going with them. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man’s house. 13He told us how he had seen an angel appear in his house and say, “Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. 14He will bring you a message through which you and all your household will be saved.”
15‘As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. 16Then I remembered what the Lord had said: “John baptised with11:16 Or in water, but you will be baptised with11:16 Or in the Holy Spirit.” 17So if God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?’
18When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, ‘So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance that leads to life.’
The church in Antioch
19Now those who had been scattered by the persecution that broke out when Stephen was killed travelled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, spreading the word only among Jews. 20Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus. 21The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.
22News of this reached the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. 23When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. 24He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.
25Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.
27During this time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28One of them, named Agabus, stood up and through the Spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire Roman world. (This happened during the reign of Claudius.) 29The disciples, as each one was able, decided to provide help for the brothers and sisters living in Judea. 30This they did, sending their gift to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.
