Giovanni Battista
1Mentre vivevano a Nazaret, Giovanni Battista cominciò a predicare nel deserto della Giudea. 2«Finitela coi vostri peccati!», ammoniva continuamente. «Volgetevi a Dio, perché il Regno dei Cieli arriverà presto!» 3Il profeta Isaia aveva parlato secoli prima del ministero di Giovanni. Di lui aveva scritto: «Sento un grido dal deserto: “preparate la strada per il Signore, raddrizzate il sentiero dove Egli camminerà!”»
4Giovanni portava un vestito fatto di pelo di cammello, trattenuto ai fianchi da una cintura di cuoio; il suo cibo era costituito da locuste e miele selvatico. 5Gente da Gerusalemme, da tutta la valle del Giordano e da ogni parte della Giudea affluiva nel deserto per sentirlo predicare e 6coloro che confessavano i loro peccati venivano battezzati da Giovanni nel fiume Giordano.
7Ma, quando vide un gran numero di Farisei e di Sadducei, che venivano per essere battezzati, li apostrofò:
«Razza di serpenti, chi vi ha detto che scamperete allʼira di Dio che incombe su di voi? 8Prima di essere battezzati, dovete provare coi fatti che vi siete allontanati dal peccato; 9non crediate di farla franca, pensando “Siamo al sicuro, perché siamo Giudei, discendenti di Abramo”! Questo non prova niente. Dio può cambiare questi sassi in altrettanti Giudei! 10La scure del giudizio di Dio è già alla radice degli alberi e ogni albero che non produce frutti sarà tagliato e bruciato. 11Io battezzo con lʼacqua coloro che si pentono dei propri peccati, ma sta arrivando qualcun altro, qualcuno molto più grande di me, così grande che io non son degno neanche di portargli i sandali! Egli vi battezzerà con lo Spirito Santo e col fuoco.
12Separerà la pula dal grano: brucerà la pula con un fuoco inestinguibile e immagazzinerà il grano».
Battesimo di Gesù
13Allora Gesù, lasciata casa sua in Galilea, andò al fiume Giordano per essere battezzato da Giovanni. 14Giovanni non voleva.
«Non è giusto», diceva, «sono io che ho bisogno di essere battezzato da te!»
15Ma Gesù lo rassicurò: «No, battezzami, perché devo fare tutto ciò che è giusto». Allora Giovanni lo battezzò.
16Dopo il battesimo, non appena Gesù fu uscito dallʼacqua, il cielo si aprì ed egli vide lo Spirito di Dio scendere su di lui sotto forma di colomba. 17Una voce dal cielo disse: «Questo è il mio Figlio diletto nel quale mi sono compiaciuto».
1In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, 2And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 3For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 4And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. 5Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, 6And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
7¶ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: 9And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 10And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 11I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: 12Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
13¶ Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. 16And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
