دعوت به بازسازی خانهٔ خدا
1در سال دوم سلطنت داريوش، در روز اول ماه ششم، خداوند پيامی توسط حجی نبی برای زروبابل (پسر شئلتیئيل) حاكم يهودا، و برای يهوشع (پسر يهوصادق) كاهن اعظم، فرستاد.
2خداوند قادر متعال به حجی نبی فرمود: «اين قوم می‌گويند كه اكنون وقت بازسازی خانهٔ خدا نيست.» 3سپس، خداوند اين پيام را توسط حجی نبی برای قوم فرستاد: 4«آيا اين درست است كه شما در خانه‌های نوساخته زندگی كنيد ولی خانهٔ من خراب بماند؟ 5به نتيجهٔ كارهايتان نگاه كنيد: 6بذر زياد می‌كاريد، ولی محصول كم برداشت می‌كنيد؛ می‌خوريد ولی سير نمی‌شويد؛ می‌نوشيد ولی تشنگی‌تان رفع نمی‌گردد؛ لباس می‌پوشيد اما گرم نمی‌شويد؛ مزد می‌گيريد ولی گويی آن را در جيبهای سوراخدار می‌گذاريد.
7«خوب فكر كنيد و ببينيد چه كرده‌ايد و نتيجه‌اش چه بوده است! 8حال به كوه رفته، چوب بياوريد و خانهٔ مرا دوباره بسازيد تا من از آن راضی شوم و در آنجا مردم احترام مرا بجا آورند.
9«انتظار محصول فراوانی داشتيد، اما خيلی كم به دست آورديد؛ و وقتی همان مقدار كم را هم به منزل آورديد، آن را از بين بردم. می‌دانيد چرا؟ چون خانهٔ من خراب مانده و شما فقط به فكر خانه‌های خود هستيد. 10به همين علت است كه آسمان نمی‌بارد و زمين محصول خود را نمی‌دهد. 11من در سرزمين شما خشكسالی پديد آورده‌ام و اين خشكسالی تمام كوهها، مزرعه‌ها، تاكستانها، باغهای زيتون و ساير محصولات و حتی انسان و حيوان و تمام حاصل دسترنج شما را فرا خواهد گرفت.»
12آنگاه زروبابل و يهوشع و تمام كسانی كه از اسارت برگشته بودند از خداوند ترسيدند و پيام حجی نبی را كه خداوند، خدايشان به او داده بود اطاعت كردند.
13سپس خداوند بار ديگر توسط نبی خود حجی به قوم فرمود: «من با شما هستم.» 14-15خداوند در زروبابل و يهوشع و تمام قوم علاقه و اشتياق ايجاد كرد تا خانهٔ او را بسازند. پس، در سال دوم سلطنت داريوش در روز بيست و چهارم ماه ششم همه جمع شده، به بازسازی خانهٔ خداوند قادر متعال، خدای خود پرداختند.
A Call to Build the House of the Lord
1In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jozadak,1:1 Hebrew Jehozadak, a variant of Jozadak; also in verses 12 and 14 the high priest:
2This is what the Lord Almighty says: “These people say, ‘The time has not yet come to rebuild the Lord’s house.’ ”
3Then the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai: 4“Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?”
5Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. 6You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”
7This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. 8Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” says the Lord. 9“You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declares the Lord Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house. 10Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops. 11I called for a drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.”
12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the Lord their God and the message of the prophet Haggai, because the Lord their God had sent him. And the people feared the Lord.
13Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, gave this message of the Lord to the people: “I am with you,” declares the Lord. 14So the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the Lord Almighty, their God, 15on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month.
The Promised Glory of the New House
In the second year of King Darius,
