Provérbios de Agur
1Seguem-se as palavras que Agur, filho de Jaque, dirigiu a Itiel e a Ucal:
2Sim, eu sou o mais bruto dos seres humanos;
falta-me inteligência suficiente para poder considerar-me um homem.
3Não tenho sabedoria, nem o conhecimento do Deus santo.
4Quem é que, tendo subido ao céu,
pode descer de novo de lá?
Quem é que alguma vez conseguiu reter os ventos na sua mão
ou guardar as águas sob as suas vestes?
Quem estabeleceu os limites da Terra?
Qual é o seu nome ou o do seu filho?
Sabê-lo-ás?
5Cada palavra de Deus é pura;
ele é um escudo real para os que nele encontram refúgio.
6Por isso, nada acrescentes à sua palavra,
para que não venhas a ser repreendido e acusado de falsidade.
7Duas coisas te pedi, ó Deus, antes de morrer:
8Primeiro, que me afastes da falsidade e da mentira;
depois, que não me dês nem pobreza nem riqueza;
dá-me o bastante para as minhas necessidades.
9Se ficar rico, corro o risco de me esquecer de ti e perguntar:
“Mas afinal quem é o Senhor?”
Por outro lado, se vier a empobrecer,
a miséria pode levar-me ao roubo e a desonrar o nome de Deus.
10Não acuses falsamente um indivíduo, perante aquele que o emprega,
para que não te rogue pragas, por causa dessa tua má ação.
11Há pessoas que maldizem o seu pai,
e não bendizem a sua mãe.
12Outros há, ainda, que se consideram puros,
mas que nunca chegaram a lavar-se da sua imundície.
13É gente arrogante e altiva,
que olha os outros sempre de sobrancelhas levantadas.
14Atropelam os aflitos e devoram os pobres
com dentes afiados como cutelos.
15Há três coisas, ou mesmo quatro, que nunca se fartam,
que nunca dizem: “Basta!”
Como a sanguessuga que sempre clama
“Dá-me! Dá-me!”
16São elas
o inferno,
a madre estéril,
uma terra seca
o fogo.
17Quem zomba do seu pai, mesmo que seja só com o olhar,
ou quem despreza a obediência devida à sua mãe,
acabará com os olhos arrancados pelos corvos
e devorados pelas crias de águia.
18Estas três coisas parecem-me maravilhosas
e há até uma quarta que eu não compreendo:
19O caminho da águia no céu,
o caminho duma serpente deslizando nas rochas,
o caminho dum navio no alto mar
e o desenvolvimento do amor entre um homem e uma moça.
20Há ainda outra coisa: a conduta duma mulher adúltera,
que depois de pecar procura recompor-se dizendo:
“Mas que mal é que eu fiz?”
21Três coisas existem, e mesmo quatro,
capazes de transtornar toda a Terra e que se tornam insuportáveis:
22Um miserável que se torna governante,
um insensato que tem comida de sobra,
23uma mulher desprezada, quando casa,
uma escrava que toma o lugar da sua senhora.
24Há quatro pequenas coisas,
mas que possuem um entendimento maravilhoso:
25As formigas, que são uns animaizinhos indefesos,
mas que sabem guardar no verão a comida para o inverno;
26Os damões-do-cabo, animais também não muito fortes,
mas que têm inteligência para construir as suas habitações nas rochas;
27Os gafanhotos que, apesar de não terem um chefe,
sabem voar organizados em enxames;
28Os gecos que se podem apanhar com as mãos,
mas que conseguem entrar nos palácios dos grandes senhores.
29Existem três, ou mesmo quatro criaturas,
que têm um porte e uma conduta admiráveis:
30O leão, o rei dos animais, que ninguém faz recuar;
31O pavão, exibindo a sua beleza,
o bode
e o chefe duma nação a quem ninguém deve resistir.
32Se caíste na loucura de te elevares a ti próprio,
ou se começaste a tramar o mal,
é melhor calares-te.
33Como o bater as natas produz manteiga
e o esmurrar do nariz provoca sangue,
assim também a explosão da cólera gera disputas.

7Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die:30.7 deny…: Heb. withhold not from me 8Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:30.8 convenient…: Heb. of my allowance 9Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.30.9 deny…: Heb. belie thee
10Accuse not a servant unto his master, lest he curse thee, and thou be found guilty.30.10 Accuse…: Heb. Hurt not with thy tongue 11There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother. 12There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness. 13There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up. 14There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.
15The horseleach hath two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough:30.15 It is…: Heb. 18There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not: 19The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid.30.19 midst: Heb. heart 20Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness. 21For three things the earth is disquieted, and for four which it cannot bear: 22For a servant when he reigneth; and a fool when he is filled with meat; 23For an odious woman when she is married; and an handmaid that is heir to her mistress.
24There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise:30.24 exceeding…: Heb. wise, made wise 25The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer; 26The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks; 27The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands;30.27 by…: Heb. gathered together 28The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings’ palaces.
29There be three things which go well, yea, four are comely in going: 30A lion which is strongest among beasts, and turneth not away for any; 31A greyhound; an he goat also; and a king, against whom there is no rising up.30.31 greyhound: or, horse: Heb. girt in the loins 32If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself, or if thou hast thought evil, lay thine hand upon thy mouth. 33Surely the churning of milk bringeth forth butter, and the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.
